No matter how the content of the show actually is, the fact that an KZfaq INDIE CARTOON series somehow got the attention of the people at Prime Videos to officially licence and fund it is a HUGE win for indie animations and KZfaq series in general, the fact that it even exists is already a huge achievement in of itself. The main problem of people who dont like musicals is that they don't like ones where the plot seems to grind to a halt to have expositions in song-form. When most good musicals like Hamilton know how to weave a moving plot and character development while singing. Like good musicals have to make you feel the plot is actually moving. Another more obvious one is inherent in film musicals, where it is harder to suspend the audience's disbelief that people will break into song in-universe in a medium that values realism (a trait that live theater can get away with).
@raphaelllorens2919
@raphaelllorens2919 6 ай бұрын
I think Hazbin did this with it's musical numbers.. the songs moved the plot forward and didn't grind things to a halt. Also the singing is called out several times in the show, like after Husk and Angel sing "Loser Baby" the sharks come out and go "they're SINGING!?" or when Charlie first sings "Happy Day in Hell" Vaggie is like "oh no... she's gonna break out into song.." Even in the pilot Vaggie tells Charlie not to sing and Charlie just goes ahead and sings anyways.
@bradencosier80
@bradencosier80 6 ай бұрын
That's exactly why I dislike most musicals! I hate how the songs just launch out of nowhere, add nothing to the plot and grind everything to a halt only for everything to suddenly resume as if nothing happened. Hazbin Hotel actually uses the songs to progress the plot and that won me over

@@raphaelllorens2919*Most* of the time, I think that’s true, but I think the hard commit to “two songs per episode” hurt the show in the end. It’s very obvious when the songs have to effectively drop all lyricism for a line or two so the characters can talk. That, and I skipped the song right before the climactic fight because it absolutely grinds everything to a halt. Majority of the songs were solid, though.

From almost every review I have seen about Hazbin Hotel from people who are iffy to people who do/don't like it, the concencus is that the pacing of the story is rushed. Which is completely understandable. If you have 8 episodes and 20 minute run times, you have to write a story that fits that time frame. I honestly believe the show would have benefited massively if it had one more episode, and every episode had an additional 5 minutes of run time so they could solidify the world more and explore the characters a bit deeper.

I think the pacing could've beeen better if it tried to tackle a few things at a time than trying to juggle so many things so fast. Perhaps it would feel smoother if Season 1 is a reintroduction to the setting and the characters, getting proper advertisement to the hotel, and receiving a few actual guests while being shown some of the main characters' quirks, backgrounds, and personal problems. Some problems like Charlie and Lucifer's resolution felt like they were solved too quickly over a few words and a song and there are a couple of large timeskips as well. P.S. This is from someone who used to like Hazbin Hotel, but gave it a shot to see how much it progressed.

A lot of Hazbin fans have been waiting since the pilot. I won't lie, I was really excited as well but I never really kept up after watching the pilot. Just heard whisperings here and there. Musicals aren't a lot of people's cups of tea, and honestly? I thought I wasn't going to like the musical aspect of Hazbin. EP 1 hits ya real good with that first one but the transitions into songs get a lot more natural as the show continues. The characters are really fun, and if the cursing doesn't bother you too much, it creates some great humor. I hope all the boys give the show a shot if the concept interests them-- I think it really picks up as it goes on, and I only got more and more interested. Criticism is fair and valid! Im so happy that they acknowledge twitter hate is stupid and ruins amazing indie stuff like this. Also so happy that they mentioned how Hamilton is legit amazing, you can also tell at some point the songs in hazbin could’ve taken a lotta inspo from Hamilton. Hazbin definitely took inspo from a lotta other musicals and genres as well tho. Also I already know that Adam was the one to drop the C bomb lol. You can tell I’m a fan but I also love criticizing the show when it deserves it. There are definitely issues with pacing and development of certain characters but it’s mainly bc A24 didn’t rlly give the project enough runtime to really develop. Also the writers are pretty afraid the show gets canceled like a lotta good new shows do on Netflix, adult swim and A24, tho I do understand that they were supposed to try and improvise based on the budget and time they were given. Either way I’m hoping season 2 fixes some of those issues cuz I’m rlly excited for the potential of the show. The animation is beautiful the songs are as well especially since a lotta people were expecting the songs to be halfassed cuz it started off as an indie project but nope they went all out especially since the cast was filled with amazing broadway actors/actresses. Also I love the og cast as much as the new one both have their strengths, it was so upsetting to see the og cast go but I do understand why vivzie wanted broadway stars, she wanted a full blown musical and a lot of the og cast had separate singers do the songs on the pilot. So for a now A24 production it makes sense for them to want one voice per character not two. Yes many of the og cast can sing but they weren’t full blown pros at singing. But mad respect to them for bringing the og voices to life. Hope the show stays strong despite all the intense unnecessary hate it gets on twitter and its flaws. And I respect Garnt, Connor and Joey for being so real and giving their honest opinion. It’s hard to find through the sea of obvious “hate just to hate” tweets and the obsessive fans who attack anyone who hates the show. Its ok to think the show is just meh, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea that doesn’t mean you cant appreciate parts of a show you dislike same as you can understand when a show you like has serious flaws. And I like how they talked abt their honest opinion on how some parts of the show turned Garnt off to it like the swearing but also appreciated the effort and the music.

Because of how much anime and Western animation take influence from one another, I think the Trash Taste guys could afford to watch more Western animation, maybe even make some all Western animation 3x3s. That said, Hazbin Hotel definitely wasn't made with weebs in mind. I saw the original pilot once in 2019 when it came out and once before watching the main show, and I watched the first episode of Helluva Boss when it came out, and I was initially confused and thought "how does the spinoff have more episodes than the main show now?" and then I learned that it's because the pilot was straight-up sold to A24 and couldn't have more episodes of it be made for KZfaq. I have definitely been looking for more hard TV-MA-rated musical adult-oriented animated series that use darkly comedic (or sometimes just dark) songs to help potentially touchy topics be conveyed easier, but the way shows like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and The Owl House ended made me tired of really deck-stacked religious criticism cartoons, and things about Hazbin Hotel possibly being a version of such a show that didn't have to hide behind allegory (that got increasingly less allegorical and more in-your-face) thanks to it being explicitly for adults unlike She-Ra and Owl House weren't getting me excited for it. But then I started watching it, and it's enjoyable in a vacuum, and the music is good, especially when Keith David is singing, hence why "Loser Baby" is my favorite song from Season 1, although I think it would be better if either its versions of Heaven and Hell took from a mix of religious mythologies, like Vivienne Medrano said it would when in the final show it's really just based on a God-and-Jesus-free cherry-picked version of Christianity, or if there was a God-like figure comparable to the talking constellation from the Futurama episode "Godfellas" or like the Frances McDormand God from Good Omens that is flawed and struggles with Their job but is ultimately trying to earnestly and non-spitefully do what They think is the right thing to do, even if They maybe get a few things wrong along the way. For that reason, I think that Owl House is ultimately better concept-wise than Hazbin Hotel, even if Papa Titan is essentially a fusion of the "best" qualities of God and Satan, and my opinions on the circumstances behind Owl House's cancellation are complicated, to put it mildly, and not fully in line with the narrative of its cancellation circumstances generally preferred by fans of the show. Also, yeah, Hazbin Hotel's more frequent use of the C-word compared to even other animated shock comedies can be jarring, but it's still nowhere near as much as Billy Butcher on The Boys uses it. Maybe Hazbin Hotel can get away with it due to it being developed by a woman and the person saying it the most being the ludicrously misogynistic main antagonist of the first season Archangel Adam (it's probably also why characters still say "bitch" in a noticeably misogynistic way in Hazbin Hotel even when it feels like not as many "irreverent" shows are using it like that, with some stuff, like James Gunn-directed stuff, having male characters that aren't supposed to be immediately condemned as sexist call unpleasant women "dicks" instead of "bitches" in a way that sounds really awkward). To me, Hazbin Hotel is more "frustrating" than actually "bad." And the poor pacing is likely because of Prime Video always giving its shows eight-episode long seasons when longer seasons might help (although Legend of Vox Machina is one of the few adult-oriented animated series on Prime Video to have twelve-episode seasons instead of eight-episode ones, and that tends to have bloat to it, although I just don't like Vox Machina in general because of feeling like, even compared to most other modern animated shock comedies, it feels like it treats swearing and sex references like jokes by themselves rather than situational stuff that makes their usage funny, which I think is the result of it being adapted from a D&D podcast, where it's easier to get away with that than it is in an actual narrative animated series with a firm fourth wall). But yeah, if the guys are going to talk about Hazbin Hotel on the podcast, they should talk about other Western animated shows too, and maybe give their take on why anime has always been for all age demographics and in all genres but Western animated TV series for adults that aren't primarily shock comedies didn't really catch on in the West until the mid-to-late 2010s.

I never understood the whole "oh it swears a lot, so it's trying to be edgy and tryhard" critique. Not just for Hazbin Hotel, but just for any adult animated show that isn't South Park apparently. Even ignoring the whole "they are literally in hell" angle, why is it that excessive swearing is seen as a bad thing only when it comes to adult animation? Movies? Fine. Non animated TV shows? Fine. But apparently adult animation is where we draw the line. Also, be honest, how many of us swear constantly when where just talking casually with friends and sometimes family? I mean Aussies probably use the word "cunt" more than the word "hello". How is that any different?

I don’t think that the problem is necessarily the accent with swearing, it’s how it’s used. Castlevania has cursing that doesn’t really work, but a Tarantino works with having swearing everywhere works. Maybe it’s because I’m American, but an American accent cursing sounds like how real people I know talk about. Which is probably why it doesn’t work as actual dialogue. But I think that using it in casual conversation in writing doesn’t really work. Hazbin Hotel seems very similar to Castlevania. I think it’s because Connor and Garnt are British so, it probably sounds weird to them. Like Joey being confused is probably him being Australian, but I don’t know.

Making the musical numbers mean something is a big thing for musical products. That's why Let It Go was so popular when Frozen came out. Hazbin Hotel has two seperate "issues," with one being real and the other being created by the people who don't touch grass. First is the pacing. The entire show, if watched back-to-back, has the exact pacing of a Broadway musical. Which is A: The safest choice for what the show's target audience presumably wanted, and B: Cut out a lot of filler content such as basic misunderstandings, miscommunication, etc. that you would see in pretty much any other show with a longer season. A couple episodes come to mind, like Angel Dust and Sir Pensious fighting at episode 2, Charlie and Vaggie fighting near the finale, and Charlie understanding Angel's reason for being so short with her in episode 4. So much was taken out for good reason, though it did admittedly leave a lot of room for 1-2 extra episodes to pad out extra parts, maybe ones that could have explored more about Hell's Overlords and explained some of the hierarchy. The other "problem" is the swearing, debauchery, etc. The people who haven't experienced the more exotic parts of life truly don't understand or don't care for the people in Hell. Drug abuse, sex work, dangers of contracts, etc. are all touched upon, and bring nuance to characters in a level I haven't seen a lot of shows try to achieve. Angel Dust in the 4th episode is a prime example. Before it, most people assume he's a cut and dry promiscuous porn actor with a bit of trauma, but nothing else to him. But the show truly showed how horrendous his unlife is, and how hopeless he truly is while putting on a convincing mask of a man who's got it all. Hazbin Hotel is one of my favorite shows, and I hope more people can look past the inherent stereotype of "just another adult animation."

My husband is definately not a musical person as well as not into the aesthetic of the show, but he still gave it a shot and like you while its not his THING, he still found it entertaining enough for the watch. (as well as indulge me in conspiracy theories about the story lol) As long as you gave it a shot, and it was at least a fun sit through even if its not your cup of tea is all a good fan of the series could ask for. Also, 8:40 for those curious! Vivzies dream for the series was to have it as a full on musical, and with broadway actors. So when the show came into development, while the actors for the pilot were amazing, none fit that bill and several characters even had TWO actors, one for singing and one for voice. So in reality it would be really hard to manage that when you have a major studio also breathing down your neck about money. So while it sucks that they couldn't stay, realistically with how the production would be it wasnt really feasible in the long run.

Grant, I hope you still give Hazbin a chance. At least get to episode 6. You’ll meet Lucifer (my favorite episode with some of the best music) and you’ll also get a touching moment with Angel Dust and Huskar with a funny as hell duet.

Hazbin feels like high schoolers at a creative arts school trying to make an adult comedy. Like, they're obviously very talented, but the adult-ness feels juvenile

If you found the first 3 episodes alright, I think you’d love the the 4th episode it’s objectively the best in my opinion.

Gotta say, Garnt was literally 1 episode away from the, arguably, best episode of HH and funnily enough also the episode with the most hate on twitter

As a hazbin and helluva boss fan, I have like zero idea about the drama, I just stay away from all that, I just like the characters and plot

Honestly I never hear anything about the fandom, the only times I hear about Hazbin Hotel is when some Twitter users have delved 15+ years into someone’s account who works on the show to try and make the show look bad

Looking at the comments, I honestly didn’t expect most Trash Taste fans to like something like Hazbin Hotel. I’m glad that my preconceived thought of the replies under this highlighted clip was wrong, as I too enjoyed the show. Gotta say though, it’s such a weird take when someone who’s watched and liked actual edgy stuff complain that Hazbin Hotel is “too much” or “juvenile” in the realm of swearing. That’s such a bizarre double standard to me.

garnts comment on the swearing was really interesting to me. i have a similar accent but live in canada, and i swear like a sailor, almost everyone i know does, so it sounds completely normal for me. we are a fishing heavy province so perhaps we swear like sailors because we are

I knew somehow Garnt was going to cover this show. Its just too much of a hit to let it pass.
