At the end of day Garp had a decision to make and he picked the marines. 😂😂😂

Garp gave his kids their entire life to choose the "correct" path with the Marines. We know that in One Piece, everyone has their own lives, motivations, dreams, goals, statuses, morals, etc. Luffy explains this when he first finds out that Ace is in trouble, saying that he won't interfere because its Ace's own life to live. This is something that Ace backs up by telling Luffy to leave once he found out that Luffy was coming to save him. Ace lived his life as a pirate. An outlaw that was going to be punished accordingly, and Ace understood this when he set out to see. To be a pirate means to put your life on the line. While Ace didn't deserve to be publicity executed for the sins of his father, he had the consequences of his lifestyle coming to him in the event he got caught. A lifestyle that he choose despite Garp's desire for his children to become an ideal Marine. At Ace's final hour, would Garp choose to go agaisnt his ideals and save his grandson? Would Garp choose to deface the world's only hope? After a lifetime of trying to influence his kids, what could he do when they chose not to listen? It was Ace's life to live, and to die. While there are other elements to the situation - such as Ace not deserving his death, and the notion of simply being a pirate means you are a bad person - Garp's decision was not one where I think he was completely wrong with.

Garp might have inspired all the people he trained to stop fighting. Not to mention it was televised. Regular people in our world might not know there Generals, but just the knowledge of a general going against his military could possibly cause riots all over a country.

Garp was willing to let ace go in a just fashion. Garp clearly believes that ace didn't live the way he advised him to. Aces death was the consequence of not listening to garp. Gaps entire way of thinking was shifting before our eyes. Garp didn't know that he had any kind of sympathy for his family. It was something that came out gradually leading to aces death. Garp learned a lesson when akainu killed ace...

They forgetting that garps kids were the marines not Luffy or ace. Ace is his “grandson”(bros takin care of his favorite opp’s kid) but he told him to become a marine when he was a kid. People who lacks principle could never possibly understand the choices Garp had to make..

If garp saved ace it would go against everything he believed in and his moral code. Also if he had fought against the navy not only would they be in turmoil and feel betrayed but so would the world. They would lose trust in the navy, which garp joined as it was a way for him to enforce justice, fyerbseeing the one they looked up to betray them for a pirate.

Grap did what he could at the time if he would of did anything els he would of end up having to leave the navy

If garp stepped in, the marines would at least be stunned enough for the wb pirates to take advantage of that, and some sword marines would take actions to help garp (maybe a few of them at least)

Man was going through a hella traumatic time in life... And I think Luffy showing up was the final straw that broke him, and shut him down completely. As much as he wanted to help I do think he was being kept in check by sengoku. (And possibly who's above him) And tho giving up ace the child he swore to protect was an impossible task, he could stand by idly, but to stop his grandson from saving ace was even harder and I think that's why he cracked and just stopped then and there! Also Garp wasn't gonna be able to take on all 4 admirals, and if he tried and made it out congrats now he's a fugitive and pirate (at best and tried for treason and executed at worst)

Garp's hardiest moment was to stand their and do nothing for the sake of the marines.

That’s was the whole point of Garps character and why he let Dadan beat him up. He knew he should’ve done more and he was having an internal battle like when he let Luffy knock him down. He knew as a marine he should step in for the greater good of the marines but then he had his actual grandson running up to save his adopted grandson. Job or family. His form of justice or throwing it to the wind.

This subject is a bit tricky bc Garp like his son and grandson really value the freedom of choice. I think you are failing to comprehend the concept of a struggle. Garp struggled with what to do because he wanted to save Ace, but to do so would mean destroying everything he helped build for the war. THAT is a struggle and that caused him to hesitate and yes that hesitation is a factor to Ace dying. But let me ask you this, does failure to act brand you for life? Right now in MHA they are doing a REDEMPTION for a father who spent decades being a straight up monster for the sake of his own pride. All Garp did was hesitate, which you dam well know wont happen a second time

Ace was going to be executed by the marines and Garp is a marine. Garp is or was the power house of the marines that shaped what the navy is today. So for him to step in to save a pirate that is regarded as a criminal, then what does that make of the marines. Garp was in a tough position. If he saved Ace that means he is no longer a marine that's over with.

Idk why the dude making a point isn't getting listened to. Compare Garp's position as hero of the marines to All Might's as the symbol of peace in MHA. Both of them serve as possible symbols of their respective factions (navy and heroes respectively) influence on the world - in both cases, the maintenance of peace. We as the viewers follow a pirates perspective and see firsthand how good pirates can be, but to the average Joe of the one piece world, pirates are bad guys who do bad things. They hurt people, steal from them, etc. Etc. If Garp, a hero of the marines, on national TV does something as crazy as acting out against his fellow marines to save a pirate, the ripple effects on the world's perception and trust of the navy would go out the window, there would be riots! Garp knows this and as such he has to weigh all the potential pain that could be caused if he follows his heart against the personal suffering of himself and Ace.

Garp tried to steer Ace and Luffy towards the marines. They chose to be pirates. Easy as that. He even went against his duty by letting Luffy beat him to save his brother.
