The blues are alive in Austin musician Gary Clark, Jr, who has been touring with guitar legend Eric Clapton. He left us speechless at last year's SXSW and he's finally coming to town to perform on Morning Becomes Eclectic. Watch / Listen to the full session here: www.kcrw.com/mu...

Oh Gary, why are you so blue? A truly talented artist. So powerful, when he plays you can feel him feeling the music. And that voice, he could have been an R&B legend! Can you imagine him being born 35 years earlier? He'd be a staple on classic rock stations world wide. Sadly, though, it is a bygone era, and someone this talented will go unchecked by most folks in this generation. It's depressing really. But maybe that's why he's so blue...

Gary Clark Jr. is the proof that you don't need to be as fast as Vai or Satriani to be an awesome guitarist, it takes a lot of HEART (and not speed) to play something like this guy.

I recently learned about this band for the first time, and I'm more impressed with each new video that I watch - great stuff! As a Casino owner, it's nice to see that someone understands that you actually can control their feedback while still using overdrives and lots of gain.

Well, I saw Hendrix in 1966 at The Whiskey A Go Go and this was similar to when I saw Gary 2 weeks ago at The Roxy. Small room. I waited in line 3 1/2 hours, and I was still 2nd and standing right at the stage 5 ft from him for 2 hours, so I consider it worth it even at 64.. Anyway his live show is so much more dynamic that any videos I've seen. I compare him to Hendrix in that he's taking the blues into a completely new direction. I was playing Bright Lights & Numb at a blues show tonight

Mensch is correct in the assumption that the Blues is a common style of music, the root of most American music today. It's more about the style of the player. Hendrix, Stevie Ray both preform the blues to appeal the younger generations which allowed younger players to follow. Regardless, they still follow the licks and lessons learned from the like of Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Taylor and the 3 Kings !

i saw gary clark jr live (wearing his shirt right now) and the other guitarist literally barely played during the whole show. he mostly just tuned through the middle of songs and didn't contribute to the songs at all. everyone else in the band was on another level though. they're such a good live band. (other than the other guitarist)

He's no Hendrix copy. He's totally different, just like Jimi was. Should never be compared to Hendrix as they are completely different when it comes down to the notes being played. Clark is taking off in a new direction with a new style.
