It was a setup from the start. The aim was to play the perpetual British class card if we are the elite and we deserve this while you the working class don’t because you are in your situation because you deserve to be. Sadly many working class people will nod their heads in agreement rather than acknowledge that the class mobile can no longer be attained if the odds are stacked against you. It’s a weird conflation between wealth and class that’s blinding people into poverty

I find it hard not to be spitting mad about Annabel Denham's defence of the super-rich! With due respect, I guess she is a reasonably well paid expert as the Director of Communications at the right-wing, climate change denying, neoliberal think tank ;The Institute of Economic Affairs, funded by the fossil fuel industry, tobacco industry, and undisclosed others. Surely not the Koch Brothers? So she has earned her right to speak on behalf of these right-wing billionaires in opposition to 99.99% of our society. Her hatred of Britain and the British in the guise of privatising the NHS is abhorrent - I was surprised to not hear her say TB, Cholera and starvation are to be expected in a free word

I also found it interesting that she took the German system as an aspiration. While our shitty hybrid system is responsible for a lot of our problems. I personally know people who have had unnecessary surgeries because it was in the profit interest of the hospital. I personally am currently under insured as I can't switch from a private insurance to a public one. The only reason the German system isn't as bad as the NHS is because we don't completely underfund it. It's actually pretty simple, in fact a lot of the British should realize that too. But I don't know, maybe enough people fall for the attempt to completely gaslight them.

The other thing that seems to be a trend in a lot of debates on this subject (including this one) seems to be that the opposition very quickly turns to "oh, you're just going to take ALL the money away? Confiscate it like in the French revolution?" ...tax is somehow only just when applied to the poor and full on robbery when applied to the rich. The psychosis runs deep. I imagine that getting 10% less of a 2bn PURE PROFIT is not going to dissuade any tycoon from 'trying their best'.. (personally I would be ok with only 1.8!). But 200mil in public spending changes lives.

More than anything, Annabel has shown that she doesn't really understand the actual problem. The fact that she brought up the argument of "rich people just moving away" and even aluding to it being immoral to tax rich people while it is perfectly fine to tax ordinary people who are suffering 100 times more from the Covid crisis, is just mind boggling. She either 1: doesn't understand at all how wealth is created, maintained and distributed, or 2: she knows, but choses to play devil's advocate perhaps due to some personal interests.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Economically, there is no reason why we would want to incentivise very wealthy to be more wealthy anyway - all that does is suck wealth out of the economy and make wealth like housing unaffordable for ordinary people. Why should the poor always subsidise the rich? Greedy billionaires are unwilling to give something back, always keeping it all for themselves and not working hard to get that money! @Ryan-pz2wh
@Ryan-pz2wh Ай бұрын
Privatising things like railway lines and waterworks is pointless since it isn’t a “free market”. People only have one local railway station which is operated by only one company. The railway company is essentially a monopoly over the service it provides. Consumers have very little viable alternatives (driving into the city is too expensive, busses and bikes take too long) so these railway companies can effectively ramp up the prices as much as they want. They have their customers hostage and it isn’t free market capitalism where consumers have the power.

It's too easy for billionaire apologists to create sympathy that you're asking to take something from individuals that they've 'earned'. Making them the victims. Gary is spot on; we need a wealth tax. The transport situation (whether London or North of England) always require subsidies from the taxpayer. It is only fair that those who have made obscene profits through the pandemic, and now in the cost of living crises are heavily taxed. I remember many years ago having an ongoing argument with a stockbroker friend who was making millions, and he tried to defend his income because he had to “work so hard”. He joined me on the farm during a long bank holiday weekend (as a farmer, I could never take that time off away anyway), helping with our harvest. He didn’t last the entire weekend, but just failed to pitch on the last day. Finally, he agreed that there would be many, many people in the country that were working a lot longer and harder than he, or his colleagues were. At least the outputs of my business went to feeding people; never quite sure what the outputs from his business did, but he was able to retire in his 40’s, whereas I will turn 60 this year, with no chance of retirement now as all my savings were spent getting through the pandemic.

Annabelle’s answer to everything is privatise it, meanwhile private rail companies, energy companies in fact private companies in all sectors of our economy are receiving goverment bailouts to prop them up during the covid crisis. Banks were propped up during the financial crisis despite it being their own reckless behaviour (thanks to legislation probably supported by Annabelle in the first instance). The truth is certain sectors of our economy can and should not be run for profit (yes privatise the NHS Annabelle). How she expects a privatised Bakerloo line to have faired during covid and to come out unscathed despite record fall in footfall is laughable. She’s detached from reality and wedded to the idea of neoliberalism which is clearly failing the majority of society. But then her salary is paid for by fossil fuel, tobacco and billionaires who fund the think tank she works at so none of that is surprising. Christ we’ve not seen real term wage increases for nearly two decades, meanwhile stocks and property increase in value their on year and wealth inequality is rising exponentially. She has no answers for how we increase demand, because her ideology actively removes demand from our economy and puts it into assets. It’s all so fucking obvious and rather depressing TBH

Cristo's arguement is that it's more fair to 'grab' at the little wealth (incrase taxes on) that working people have, than to 'grab' at the vast amounts of wealth that billionaires have during a crisis. Essentially, he's saying, it's morally fairer that we increase the poverty of those without wealth to avoid the 'imorality' of taxing billionaires a fraction of their wealth.

Gary's obviously talking about employing taxes on the assets of the super-rich as a collective; he only pointed out that a single billionaire could afford to rectify a single crisis to elucidate how unevenly distributed wealth is, and where it is almost all currently sitting, not to literally single someone out for the funding.

Now to the NHS, I'd love her to explain why she thinks it's not fit for purpose and how lack of funding plays into it. Surprised seeing things like Corp Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Dividend Tax at roughly income tax levels wasn't discussed. Surely rich people can't complain about being faced the same as everyone else. Also, surely the Warren Buffet argument that paying dividends on assets in lieu of reinvesting is an admission of having run out of ideas and so hiking that tax would incentivise innovation. Finally, unsustainable business practices should be fined: any business making profit while poverty wages are subsidised by benefits should pay their employees benefits or raise wages.
