Tuesday 31 January 2017 marks a full three decades since a memorable individual display from Gary Lineker against Real Madrid.
The English striker, on the same date in 1987, netted three times at the Camp Nou to seal a 3-2 win for the Catalans.
In typical fashion, Lineker was in the right place at the right time to tap home from within the six-yard-box not once but twice in the opening five minutes of the game to give Barça a 2-0 lead. The first came from a cross courtesy of captain Víctor Muñoz and the second was on the rebound from a Carrasco strike.
The match-winning goal came from a long ball by Zubizarreta which Lineker brought down well before dinking over the keeper.
On that day, the team managed by Terry Venables, had among its ranks Robert Fernández, the club’s current technical secretary and Migueli, the player with the third most appearances in Barça’s history behind Xavi and Iniesta.
___________

The number of 'new Barca fans'who have no idea about their history prior to Samuel Etoó and Ronaldinho is astonishing. Gary was one of the finest strikers of his generation and would easily make England all time 11

abrokenlife sorry but Gary wouldn't "easily" make the england all time XI. Some names are Hurst (only player to score a hattrick in a world cup final) Rooney (all time england top scorer and most capped outfield player) Michael Owen (Ballon d'or winner) Alan shearer (all time premier league top scorer) George Camsell (need i say more?)

Gary L, was a top-class, old-school, striker. One of Englands best, sure he wasn't a great dribbler on the ball, but his control was more than adequate. Furthermore, there were things things the lad utterly excelled in, which puts him near, or at the top of the 3 Lions pile. He could pass well, he had an excellent turn of pace, was deceptively strong, never bullied. It goes withough saying he truly was great in the air, at 5'8 or so he was just scraping average height but he regularly bested the biggest and meanest defenders of his era. I hasten to add he certainly looked taller than he was. Suffice to say, he had a damn fine shot, and fantastic anticipation. One insightful comment below by Neil Mac, made mention of how fast he was getting off the deck and how agile he was. So, I sat down and rewatched GL and sod me, it really was as if he was made of elastic. Vastly underrated agility, balance, and fitness. Once down he's automatically getting back into position, "Boing!" and he's either jostling a defender, competing again for the ball, getting in position i.e., spying the gap for goal. This "rubbery" quality he possessed, goes a long way to explaining A) His quite incredible lack of injuries. B) His ability to stretch out those magical bodyparts as if from nowehere. C) Why he was so good away from home. When you consider the abject and sometimes dangerous, shit hole, playing surfaces England often played when away, GL was brilliant, truly Englands shit-pitch king. Lineker was a real ghost, or what I'd term, "delay striker." He'd show up in the 6-yard box as if from out of nowhere. GL, did this via having the brains, vision, strength and almost Ian Rush level speed, yes, Lineker was indeed that fast. GL would insert himself briefly near the goal area, pass the ball off, but rather than hang about near goal he'd often drop back deep letting his strike partner/s, wingers push forward for a time. The kiss of death for the opposition was their thinking GL had dropped back to play a secondary, or supply striker role (a job Lineker; because, of his unselfishness, and passing skill contributed admirably). GL all the while was making the defenders, and his markers ignore him as an immediate goal threat. Lineker, was using his strike partner/s as decoys. Then, with his aforementioned acceleration, he would make his delayed runs into the area often completely unmarked, and be in a prime position to nudge it home. A poacher supreme, but he wasn't just a tap-in merchant. There's enough footage out there of him banging them home from a good clip to put that one to rest. He was like a WW1 fighter ace, no fancy deflection shooting, if you get up close and persoanal you increase your chance of success ten-fold. It takes a smart man to keep it simple. Tactically, Lineker must have been an arse to play against; because, if your defence were wise to Linekers dropping deep, and you were man marking him, you'd quickly find yourself a man down in the goal box/penalty area; thus, creating space for his other CF. If you stuck with him, waiting for him to break away and go for goal, as said, unless you had some real pace, he was bloody difficult to stay with. Would you want to make that gamble? A lot of managers didn't at all. A totally tricky customer, and I'd select him for an England side any day of the week.

And a lot of people mforget or are too young to remember that internationalm setups were different there in terms of qualifying. Lineker didn't get to play against the San Marinos, the Faroes, the Andorras - with all due respect to them. Imagine, with his particular style, how good he was at feeding on scraps etc., what he might have ended up with in terms of goals. Rooney, despite all the views of him at the time, was a genuinely exceptional talent - but would he have got so many in Lineker's day, against his opponents? I am not sure. Lineker got 4 against a great Spain side, for example. I am not saying Lineker was better - but it's an interesting thought. He really was a 'proper goalscorer'.

people calling him a goal hanger and only scored tap ins..watch his movement for the 1st goal ...so fast an stealthy...almost impossible to mark unless you foul him. Superb anticipation an a relentless thirst for goals. Would score in any side as long as he is fed. Also hardly ever offside (big achievement for 'goal hanger') means his timing for his runs has to be perfect..brilliant football (strikers) brain.

Lineker’s ability to anticipate where the ball will end up and how quickly he was able to react to it was what made him such a great goal scorer. He also gave defenders a false impression of his pace at the start of a game. If he was unlikely to get on the end of a pass he would purposely make the effort to appear slower than he was, before turning on the pace in next apparent 50/50 ball. It would often be enough to fool the defender and enable him to take advantage. A smart striker who would use everything available to him in his arsenal. Physically strong and with good balance, along with a savvy footballing brain. He isn’t a particularly nice person and is very adept at making himself seem affable and humble when under public scrutiny.
