This is an excerpt from the latest episode of our podcast, Unfiltered with Oli Dugmore. Watch the rest of the interview here: • Unfiltered with Oli Du...
A world class striker, he won the golden boot at the 1986 World Cup. 80 caps for England.
Today, he is the longest serving - and most outspoken - Match of the Day presenter, the BBC’s best paid presenter, and Perhaps a bigger player in the media than he was on the pitch. He says “I was born to be in the box, I learnt how to be on the box, and I’ll end up in a box.”
Our guest today is Gary Lineker

Gary, you say the uproar was about “not much”, but that’s not true. By speaking clearly on an issue and contradicting a narrative that was not only wrong (immigration) but had grown arrogant in its intolerance of dissent, you broke the phalanx. You pierced the Tory bubble because of your large Twitter following. The resultant fury stemmed as much from how you broke the Tory narrative as much from your actual words. Thank you for exercising your free speech and your mind. Well done.

9:24 - Gary is 100% right here, there are more BBC stars who get paid far more than him. Graham Norton for example, he gets paid over £3 million a year for his BBC talk show and Eurovision duties, but that is paid for through BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC who don't have to publish star salaries. How do we know Graham get's this salary? Through records kept at Companies House.

Sorry Gary I disagree. One of the main issues with the BBC now is that it is very clearly a STATE broadcaster as opposed to national broadcaster. Parroting government narrative and agenda with very little question. Certainly on the main news outlets. Yes,there remain pockets of proper investigative journalism but that is largely the preserve of the more niche programmes now and not the flagships. As for the BBC website it is now dumbed down to the point where it is embarrassing. More concerned with relentless promotion of agendas and ideology than factual news. As for impartiality perhaps we could do without constant "explainers" telling the public what they should think. Just report the news,properly,and the public will make up their own minds. You only have to look at what isn't shown on the BBC to know that it absolutely is not committed to simply reporting the news.
@eightiesmusic1984
@eightiesmusic1984 11 ай бұрын
It has always been the state broadcaster. Goodness knows what makes you think otherwise as you seem to. It is not impartial. It refused to allow the TUC to broadcast its message on the radio in the General Strike of 1926 and footage of police attacking miners at Orgreave in South Yorkshire in June 1984 was reversed in the late evening bulletin. It gave far too much air time and false equivalence to Brexit nonsense that went largely unchallenged. It is part of the media landscape that enabled Johnson to become PM resulting in incalculable damage to Britain on so many levels.

We have a voice. I don't care about how much people in politics think they know better. I have a life and I have my own experiences. I've seen life. Had money, no money, loved and lost, travelled. Bla bla. No one tells me how to live. Be nice to people and don't hurt people. Take a walk in the fields. Greatest place in the world for me.

A commentator hailing the troops would never have caused a row like that. To the contrary, everyone would have pretended that it's perfectly "impartial" to hail the troops on air.

I think James O Brien had the scenario well described. Gary isnt meant to have a voice. There are a few viewpoints in public discourse that youre allowed to express and refugees arent included.

I'm in Canada and I love the BBC world service. I see and hear about more things and places in the world that I would never know about with out it. We have the CCB built on the same premise as the BBC and it is accused for ever of being against Conservitives and pro Liberal party. I think they both have a proud history and have played a large roll In telling our countries stories.

Watch out in coming years then. The gameplan in the UK was the Trumpian "I accuse you of what I'm about to do.. so that when I get caught I can shout both sides" The Tories have put their cronies in the top spots at the BBC... On Saturday morning, after Boris was found to be a liar, they brought the liars friend in to discuss his lying and try to excuse it... (You know. Like always happens when people are found guilty! "My mate Myra Hindley was a stand up lass... I don't think she's ever even been to the Moors!")

Lovely interview thanks Oli. A few gentle thoughts about the body language: avoid crossing your legs. Avoid covering your mouth, and stop fiddling with your tash!

Just contrast this with our politicians. It highlights to me an intentional black hole of compassion and selfishness. Meanwhile there are thousands of people doing good work,helping others and trying to make things better;and doing it quietly without any expectation of praise or gratitude. This is what makes our country great
