It's pretty crazy how a bored 12 year old sitting in his boy room decided one evening to upload this masterpiece to KZfaq just for fun.. And now 11 years later I have brought together 2.6 million people to my video. That's half the population of my home country! Although it's all thanks to Gary Moore but thank you for watching!

I'm one of the Nightwish fans who found this while doing some research for a musical project I'm doing. I had always suspected this was a cover song, but figured it was an old folk song. I'm very surprised how rockin the original is. Thanks for uploading this so long ago and I'm glad you've gotten so many views out of it.

That's awesome 👌you're welcome and thank you! Occasionally when I hear a decent new song on the radio the beat is usually made from an old 80s pop song. And it's fun finding that out after you hear the new one so I understand your excitement!

So many guitar heros overindulges themselves in their skills and produce these technical wonders running for dwo minutes, but so often they forget about melody, mood, brevity. Here we have 15 seconds of pure genius. I love these shors solos. Some guitarists were wonderful at this. DIO solos were often like this, Faith No More solos were often like this, even on the latest Anthrax record there's this song "For All Kings" that is a similar wonder. I love these.

It described the complex political environment of Northern Ireland in a way that people can relate to (the album was dedicated to Philip Lynott, Gary being from Belfast, had a great synergy with the "darkest son of Ireland". songwriting and guitar playing is off the charts, this was Moore in his creative Apex as far as I'm concerned.

They came for him one winter's night. Arrested, he was bound. They said there'd been a robbery, his pistol had been found. They marched him to the station house, he waited till the dawn. And as they led him to the dock, he knew that he'd been wronged. "You stand accused of robbery, " he heard the bailiff say. He knew without an alibi, tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom. Over the hills and far away, for ten long years he'll count the days. Over the mountains and the seas, a prisoner's life for him there'll be. He knew that it would cost him dear, but yet he dare not say. Just where he'd been that fateful night, a secret it must stay. He had to fight back tears of rage. His heart beat like a drum. For with the wife of his best friend, he spent his final night of freedom. Over the hills and far away, he swears he will return one day. Far from the mountains and the seas, back in her arms again he'll be. Over the hills and far away. Over the hills and, over the hills and, over the hills and far away. Each night within his prison cell, he looks out through the bars. He reads the letters that she wrote. One day he'll know the taste of freedom. Over the hills and far away, she prays he will return one day. As sure as the rivers reach the seas, back in his arms again she'll be. Over the hills and far away, he swears he will return one day. As sure as the river reach the seas, back in his arms is where she'll be. Over the hills and far away, she prays he will return one day. As sure as the rivers reach the sea, back in her arms is where he'll be. Over the hills, over the hills and far away. Over the hills, over the hills and far away

it's amazing how perfect this song is to be played by bands of power metal and epic metal.

The solo is good! Really good! I mean really, REALLY good!! I have been listening to guitar heroes all my life ala Steve Vai, EVH, Satch, et al. Truly, I do not think I have ever heard a solo with such phrasing executed so perfectly and powerfully. What a player he was!

I was addicted to Nightwish' version... But now that I found that, I reached the sky!

..That's correct!! It was top of the charts in Europe in 1987-1988 and your Nightwish were'nt even born yet and they are just copying and always listen original first... The best guitar-solo you'll ever heard and I was about 6-7 of age when my uncle played it from tape .. I will never forget it - the best solo.. 🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍👍

Coming in from the Nightwish train here, the original is just as good as Nightwish's cover and it's so feckin' Celtic Irish which is part of my heritage! I'm feeling pretty proud! Great tune, great story telling and what a phenominal guitarist Gary Moore was back in the day!
