Filipino boxer Mark Magsayo, promoted by compatriot Manny Pacquiao, brought an end to the lengthiest championship reign in male professional boxing by defeating Gary Russell on points to claim the WBC featherweight title. Magsayo, 26, secured victory on two out of three judges' scorecards, dethroning Russell, who had held the title since March 2015 and had only defended it six times. Expressing gratitude to Filipino fans, Magsayo, who remains undefeated, called the win in Atlantic City a childhood dream realized. His unexpected triumph followed a knockout of Mexico's Julio Ceja in August, marking his 24th victory with 16 knockouts. The judges' scores were 115-113 and 114-114 in favor of Magsayo. Russell's infrequent fights due to a shoulder injury sustained in training allowed Magsayo to capitalize on the opportunity, with the Filipino boxer stating that he hurt Russell with impactful shots in the third round.

Its funny that Russell fights much better to my liking with a hurt arm. He parries, head movement, counters, and footwork. Ive not seen Russell use counters this much in a long time. Normally he just throws a lot of blind combos, utilizing his hand speed and using offense as defense. Garys head is almost always in the centerline. All Gary needs is to run into an effective counterpuncher that uses head movement and footwork to get beaten. I wish Gary were to be more well rounded like he fought this day.

If that was the case Pacman woulda beat Floyd😆. Russell been a champion-- who injured his right arm clearly early in this fight-- idc who you are, in a combat sport your chances of winning are slim after that, no matter who your opponent is coached by..lbs.

I like Russell's dodges and accuracy, but needs more power. Magsayo has clean counters and timing, but also need more power, stamina, and better dodging. Other than that, close and good fight. Enjoyed it very much

You can not judge fights based on highlights, it wasn’t no clear nothing, you see in rd11 they said “this is still anyone’s fight…” they also said in the 10th that “Roach told him he NEEDED 2 more rds like the 9th” so why would things like that be said if it was a clear win as you put it???

Russell is better than nice, for all he talks he def. backs it up, and its a beautiful thing to see but my guy has to improve on hitting and not getting hit. He has a chin, i think he should protect it a little more instead of testing it. A little more patience and awareness on when and how to throw and get out of there would do wonders to for your offense which is already top class. As a fan, and someone from the S.E , i wanna see him keep winning for years to come. I give his performance a good 8.5 maybe 9 , but hes good enough, fast enough, and has a high enough ring IQ to be a 10 in the ring at all times . Salute to Russell.

Magsayo definitely didn't win that fight! Russell had an injury coming into the fight, reinjured it during the fight and beat him with one hand. Most of Magsayo punches were blocked.

It's hard to judge the Phillipines/Pacman style. There is a lot of activity and bouncing forward, but many of those punches MISS. When the crowd reacts to the hands flying and activity, it gives the allusion that the fighter is scoring. You've got to put them down at least once, and preferably more than once, to even have a chance, especially if you're in hostile territory.
