Gary Speed Footballer Suicide: His tragic secret?

Since last Sunday November 27th, the World of football has been wracking its brain to work out how a man, seemingly with everything to live for, would end his own life.

On the surface Gary Speed had everything; outstanding professional success, a perfect personal life, good looks and admiration from everyone. Despite acres of newspaper column inches no one seems to have an inkling of what would drive him to suicide.

However, hidden away in a little seen TV documentary aired only once, in January 1997 when Gary would have been 27 years old, is possibly the one important, and ultimately tragic, factor that may have never been fully dealt with.

The current affairs investigation was by journalist Debbie Davies. Anyone viewing the documentary at the time would've wondered and worried, as I did, how it would pan out for Gary over the following years. His was the name and the face that stayed with me from the report. The most troubling thing is that after it was shown there was never again any mention of the story in the media. Whatever happened between Gary Speed and influential football talent scout Barry Bennell, was never fully examined in the media at the time or since. Yet Barry was a man who was later convicted of the systematic and long term sexual abuse of young boys who were relying on him for their football careers. The documentary contains testimony regarding rape of boys as young as 11. According to the testimony he would show favouritism to the boys who went with him and help them get on in football. Bennell was later sent to jail yet his victims were known to keep their terrible experiences bottled up inside them.

It's not impossible to imagine boy victims who had already become successful men by 1997 would not wish their terrible experiences, some 15 or more years earlier, to become known. Only those men would know what traumatic abuse had happened to them. Weighing up all the ramifications of revealing their story you could understand if they decided to keep it tightly bottled up inside forever.

Having discovered a copy of that documentary I can bring you now the relevant portions. You too may find them compelling and the one crucial factor when we try to fathom what it was that was troubling Gary to the end.

It is noteworthy too, isn't it, that right now there is a similar story being uncovered about Penn State University, and that this has been receiving widespread media coverage.

It's wrong to say Gary committed suicide. For those who have forgotten, the coroner at the inquest reached a narrative verdict and stated that cause of death was by "self suspension" but that there was insufficient evidence to determine whether it was intentional, as he may have intended to make a "dramatic gesture" and then "nodded off to sleep". The inquest heard that the pressure of management had put some strain on his marriage and that he and his wife had argued before his death. I know some people hide their depression but those who do are usually alone for a certain period of the day. Gary spent every hour of every day with family, friends or colleagues and none of them said he showed any sign of being majorly depressed or suicidal. When people are so depressed that they make a conscious decision to commit suicide, they don't usually kill themselves after getting drunk and having a major argument with their wife. It's a shame his wife has somehow forgotten the details of this big argument because I think knowing what was said by both parties is the key to knowing what was going through Gary's head at the time of his death. I think people should respect the coroner's verdict because it's clearly correct.

It is more than obvious that he was abused as a child but he kept this secret inside and eventually he could not deal with it anymore. His family have all said that he was never abused, but therein lies the problem. He had no one to talk to.

@davegrahamdj bless you my brother. All sexual predators especially those who abuse children always find jobs working around children. This nonce who abused these footballers has now died in prison and will now be in hell getting a red hot poker shoved up his backside. There is no escaping judgement day which we all have to face one day. I hope you manage to come to terms with what happened to you and you have no blame whatsoever. Take care my friend and be safe . Gid bless 🙌 🙏 you and your loved ones ❤️

There is NEVER a clear reason why one person commits suicide. You'll never, ever know. The same person who does that might not know why he can't stand life any longer. Remember it's a sudden decision most of the times, and even when it's 'planned' it takes really NOTHING to do that. If people knew why they can't stand living their lives, they'd work it all out and they'd still be alive. Psychology has never and most probably will never fully explain why life can be so unbearable to many, many people. I wouldn't come to easy conclusions. Too easy. Especially in Protestant Britain. I can't stand Catholicism as well as any other form of organised religion, and I can recognise a wee bit of some anti-Catholic mood in many reacions about paedophilia and sorts. Watch out, I'm a Rangers man, so you'll have no doubt I'm not 'working for the Pope', but I cannot stand religious prejudice whatsoever. It's tribalistic.

Don't think Gary was at all disgusting it is a terrible shame if it turns out he was abused that's enough for most people to end their life to get away from the mental torture it surely causes it's easy to judge when it's not you Grow up and find some compassion you never know when you will need it yourself

I so hope this isn't the case...this would be such a terrible thing to have going through the mind. If something like this did happen to the poor man, how well he did to hide any affects is incredible. We will probably never ever know the reasons why Gary took his life, I just hope that if it ever comes out it never drags the man's name down.

I just need to ask a forensic question that has been playing on my mind. Can anyone help? How is it possible that he could have fallen asleep and actually hanged himself with the cable around his neck if you fall on the stairs surely they would have supported his body, or did he fall through a gap in the bannisters and downwards I just don’t get how his body could hang if he was on stairs?
