I believe you are correct in the video, the transmission code is MKZA not MZKA 😄👍. I have the same transmission, mine is no good and I’m wanting to tear it down to see if I can learn anything. Thanks for the great info!

Thank you very much for this. I just bought a CRV with the GPLA trans, which is a pain to find. So I figure I'd give rebuilding it myself a shot. Thanks to your video, I have confidence I can do it. Like you said, it looks like a manual with a little bit of auto thrown in. I have rebuilt three Stealth manual transmissions, so I think I got this. Will let you know how it goes.

Great video, in fact it is exactly what I've been looking for! I know this is probably a long shot but if you wouldn't mind letting me pick your brain with a few questions? Problem description and back story: I have an 05 Honda CR-V SE AWD 5spd and it started making a whine in Park and Neutral (exactly as you describe) one morning but it also slipped(more like it putting the car in neutral) that same morning. The whine would subside after letting it warm up and the slipping didn't continue so out of necessity/lack of funds to take it to a shop I continued to drive it. Long story short after driving it maybe 5x over the next 3 days the transmission started slipping, I tried to make it home but it stopped engaging entirely at a stoplight and on my bday nonetheless haha, I also tried every gear select position including R, yet 20 mins later it did engage in drive to pull forward. The next day I limped it home and changed/flushed with honda genuine DW-1 fluid 3x and replaced inline filter both of which ironically I had ordered the previous week for routine maintenence, the fluid wasn't bad but it was time for a change, the magnet on the drain bolt had the typical friction material sludge on it but no metal shavings large enough to see. Question: What are the odds the bearing goes bad/becomes loose and the clutches start slipping at the same time and why would all of the clutches on every gear go bad at the same time? I ask the second part because the day it completely failed it started slightly slipping in 5th gear at a steady speed but also in 4th and 3rd etc, and progressively got to the point it would no longer engage while at a stop. When I flushed and changed the fluid it did significantly reduce the whine and the slipping doesn't occur until the transmission warms up where as the first time it occurred I had just pulled out of the driveway. Also like I said when it slips it's like switching to neutral or better yet pressing the clutch on a standard and from what I've seen happens when shifting. So the question there is: Are there any other problems that could cause the symptoms I describe, like something electronic or perhaps bad solenoid/s or valve body issues? I'm gearing up to do this repair/rebuild myself so I'm just trying to figure out what my problems might be, any advice would be much appreciated. Best regards, JT

Gary, thank you so much for this content. I just bought a 2003 Honda Element and the transmission (4spd MZKA) screams when trying to shift from 1st to second. I just bought a replacement engine and transmission for a 2005 Element (also 4spd MZKA). The transmissions have a different part number. I was curious if you may know why the Honda part number is different.

Is there a resource such as a book or other document for rebuilding this transmission that you recommend? I want to rebuild mine, and having something handy like that would be great for torque specs and reassembly order.

I know this is a shot in the dark but i have one of these trans the GPPA to be exact and I've done the routine maintenance and thankfully don't have issues but I was curious can one of these transmissions handle bigger tires and maybe about 50 more horsepower and some more torque for riding on the beach? Or is this thing gonna eat itself? In your professional opinion are these strong enough to handle something like that?

A crack tube, maybe can cause it ,maybe for lack of lubes on the bearing

Good morning Gary. I need your help. The f150 wolf 97 truck and trasmy let two changes change from 2 to 3, which you put manual 1 and 2 if it works, but D nms works 1 and 2, 2 a3 no longer, which could be sensors or the valve box. I appreciate your help. Please. Good video I see what goes up.

Hello I have a 2005 honda CRV with an automatic transmition. 1 and 2 gears it shifts normaly and at 2000 RPM. When it shifts 3 and 4 i have to press on the gas to make it shift-4000 RPM. I have a feeling that the shift solenoids are bad. What solenoids control the 3. and 4. gear? The single solenoid or the dual pack? As a student on a budget I thank you for any tips.
