What about the losses in the distribution of electricity from power stations, wind power, etc?
@ElectricRadiatorsDirect
@ElectricRadiatorsDirect Жыл бұрын
That’s a good point! The losses in distribution means more energy needs to be produced than we actually need. For this reason, pairing your electric heating with a renewable energy source/supplier is your best bet if you prioritise efficiency. There will still be losses in conversion/distribution for renewables like wind and solar power of course, but it will always do less damage to the environment than fossil fuels - and prices are far more competitive now due to rising global gas and coal prices.

There is of course electric boilers too. Simply replace gas boiler for electric. That's the option we're going for. We don't have to change anything on our central heating system.

Renewable's share of total electricity generation reached a record 47.8 per cent in Quarter 1 2023, 1.0 percentage point higher than the previous record set in Quarter 1 2020, and 2.4 per cent higher than the same period last year.

How many years of use does an offshore wind turbine need before it offsets the co2 created from the couple hundred tonnes of concrete it needs? What is the second largest man made source of co2 pollution? Concrete. Don't hear it mentioned ever.

When doing the running cost comparison, you could mention that an average gas ch maintenance visit is going to be about £200. Saving that on the electric option can offset the increased running costs.

Hi Simon! We quite agree - the lack of any yearly maintenance callouts is certainly something to consider when working out the running costs of electric heating. Thank you for your feedback.

No standing charge, no yearly servicing, cost less to buy and the latest smart boilers work with solar or heat pumps plus pensioners get extra heating money over the winter.

Electric radiators certainly come out on top for us. They’re more efficient, easier to install, require zero maintenance and can be controlled more precisely through sophisticated built-in controls. Although gas is currently cheaper per kwh, the number of energy-saving features available with electric radiators allow for greater scope to reduce your running costs, plus you don’t have to worry about annual callout costs either. With the Gas Boiler Ban fast approaching, electric is also a low-carbon alternative worth considering for the future - find out more here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMiYitKpz87JeGg.html www.electricradiatorsdirect.co.uk/news/what-will-replace-gas-boilers-in-2025-the-future-of-heating/

While it’s true that gas is cheaper per kWh, around 50-70% of heat can be lost to the combustion process and through poorly insulated pipework. Electric radiators don't have this problem as they are 100% efficient at point of use, ensuring you’re only paying for the heat you use. Plus, many modern electric heaters come with smart control features such as 24/7 programming, WiFi control, open window detection and adaptive start, all of which help to trim running costs whilst making your system more efficient. We hope this has helped. Electricity used by rads typically 3-4 TIMES the price per kWh of gas. ALSO, as heat pumps move heat from outside air to inside the property they are 3-4 Times more efficient when installed correctly than electric rads. Heat loss in pipes is lost INSIDE your home and will conduct through floors, walls and ceilings and add to the warmth of the property. Heat lost to outside is the same for any heat source. WiFi controls for individual water rads are easily installed by a homeowner/renter and available from multiple manufacturers, eg Tado and Honeywell. Get your facts right. 😜

Hi there, While the initial price of electricity is important to consider, electric radiators offer advantages that contribute to long-term savings. Precision thermostats, DIY-friendly installation, zero maintenance, and WiFi distance control enhance their cost-effectiveness. You're correct in saying that external smart controls can be purchased for other systems, but the key thing to know about smart electric radiators is that WiFi control is usually a built in feature and no external hubs or thermostats are required, so you don't have to worry about any extra costs there either. Electric radiators are also ideal for heating specific rooms separately from your main system or extending warmth to areas like conservatories without major modifications. Plus, as not everyone has access to gas or heat pumps, they provide a highly controllable and efficient alternative to storage heaters. Which, while cheaper to run, often fall short in maintaining warmth throughout the day. For these reasons and more it’s crucial to consider the broader picture when it comes to running and why electric is a more viable option for many. We delve deeper into the differences between electric heating and heat pumps in one of our more recent videos, knowing that different solutions work for different people. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbyBmbl-sanLZmw.html Thanks The ERD Team

Excellent, I like this type of a breakdown and comparison. Some key points missed, just as feedback: - A boiler is a central point of failure. If it breaks you're left without hot water or heating at all. - Water pipes for central heating system may need repairs if there are failures there, and lifting carpets and floor boards is expensive. - No matter what treatments you add to the central heating system, radiators will corrode and the water in the system will get dirty over time. - You cannot DIY the central heating stuff especially relating to the boiler as a Gas Safe engineer should be doing the work to ensure safety and compliance. - Electric radiators are possible DIY jobs, even installation, except for areas such as bathrooms. You need a sparky to complete the work but only initially. - No central failure point, if one rad breaks, no worries you have time to calmly have it repaired or replaced, as the other heaters are unlikely to break at the same time or at all. - If you couple electric showees, taps and induction hobs with electric radiators, there is no need for you to have any gas coming into your property. You could potentially just have an electric bill going forward. No per unit or standing charges for gas. Gas infrastructure is expensive to maintain, so the removal of gas altogether could mean much lower bills in the future as the suppliers don't need to fork out for gas infrastructure maintenance. - You can't really, without major installation costs, have multiple radiators in a large room for example. You can with electric radiators, possibly making heating a large room more efficient.

They all bend it to suit their systems. Gas central heating cheapest to run. Everything has a maintenance cost. What cost is it to replace an electric heater when it fails? Heat pumps seem very expensive to install and house needs to be well insulated. Also very few engineers for maintenance problems. All in all still no viable alternative to gas it would seem unless you want to spend a fortune. It’s like when they told us all to buy diesel cars as they were good. 😤.

As someone that bought and has lived in a new-build, electric only property since 2007 and bought Thermaoil radiators from this company that I had to change halfway through the cold winter of 2022-23 then reinstalled Convector Heaters I can tell you this is BS. Do not be taken in by it. Electric is ridiculously expensive to run, the heaters of both kinds will use a lot of electricity even set a low temperatures that will not be enough to heat your home. With electric boilers say goodbye to instant hot water, long hot showers and baths will be a no go, plus to get electricity they have to burn fossil fuels! Really want to get back in to a gas fueled property!
