Want to save gas and have better welds, Ben at R-Tech Welding explains the features and benefits of using an argon flow meter with your welding setup. Suitable for MIG welding with Argon/CO2 and TIG welding with pure argon.
Includes tip for how to check for small welding gas leaks.
Using a gas flow meter ensures the correct flow rate is used to give a clean weld and can save gas. Standard regulators have a fairly coarse gauge whereas a gas flow meter can set the gas flow rate finely.

Great trick with the mark on the ball bearing. Also now I know my flow meter is in lpm not cfh, wondered why I was going through so much gas.

Confused about the fittings, are small Argon bottles 3/8 bsp?,, what about the medium and larger bottles?

Most bottles ( Other than disposable) should be 3/8 fitting

you need the regulator open to what pressure before the flow meter?

Hi Paul, with a flow meter in place it isn't overly important what flow is set on the regulator as the flow meter is doing all the control, that said you ideally wouldn't want the regulator set wide open as this will create large gas purges on first trigger press. I normally have the regulator set anywhere from 10-20 Litres per minute. I hope this helps - Ben
