Here it is, the beast in the east winner. 108 mile rip accross hills and valleys in the northeast of Colorado. The Big Red 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD L8T gasser 6.6 V8 with Allison 10 speed takes on, The General the big 7.3 Godzilla F-250 V8 with Torque shift 10 speed. Who wins this round, watch and see. In a few weeks we will be running the long Ike Gauntlet, yeah, not an 8 mile job, the whole enchalada. So grab some popcorn as this is long but worth it. If you are buying a new truck these two gassers need you condisderation, because they can run with the big boys now.
Subscribe and check out the four part series on this and keep watching as I will put both my trucks against what they say is the most greuling run in the U.S.

Late to the party. On the diesel gas debate, many of us just don’t want the fuss. Yea diesel maybe the best in every category, but if it means more money, more problems, more restrictions, I’d rather have a gas every time. The simplicity of these gas trucks are amazing and they are good trucks. If you need to get on KZfaq and argue about your diesel truck to justify your purchase to guys who own gas trucks to compensate for your small package in your pants, you need to reevaluate yourself. They’re all good trucks.

The other problem with diesels, is cold starting in northern climates. Places that do see -40 or colder in the winter. Without plugging them in they dont start well, sometimes they still struggle being plugged in, if you have summer fuel in the tank it will gel up. My uncle is a die hard diesel guy, i asked him if he would recommend the diesel over the gas to me, being that i care far more about reliability over power, he told me to get a 6.0 2500hd (this was before the 6.6 L8T came out). Diesels are great, and they have their place, but they are not the blanket answer across the board for everyone.

Thank you for this series and it could not have come out at a better time. I am almost out of warranty on my diesel and ordered a F350 in October with the 7.3 gas. Build tracking shows it “in production” since April 24th with no update on a build date and Dealer says it’s basically on hold. So after watching this I think I will go check out the GMC with the gasser in it. Hell if they are that close in performance and cheaper might have to go that route. Looking forward to the Ike runs, great content man thanks again.

Great review, I enjoyed watching. I was a little surprised that the Chevy did as well as it did. The 10 speed Allison designed transmission is a game changer, and GM stepped up big with towing and payload capacity several years ago. I've known the L8T is a great engine, but it's shocking how much having a quality 10 speed transmission changes things. But it makes sense. More gears and a solid build is just what the doc ordered from a Allison design. I really wanted GM to one up Ford in the displacement department. I wanted them to come out with a modernized LSX 454 with direct injection on the LT block. But that would be too radical I guess. I think that LSX 454 crate engine put out around 700 hp and was 7.4L in a small block!

The so called Allison 10speed behind your gas engine is not a true Allison, GM owns the Allison name, so you know you have a GM corporate transmission. Also any transmission with many speeds tends to have a short life, more gears equals to more moving parts which creates wear

all new vehicles have knock sensors. the computer advances the timing until knock is detected and then retards the ignition to eliminate the knock. this maintains the most power for the available fuel. you can see this with a scan tool displaying timing while driving. would be interesting to see those numbers for different fuel.

It’d be interesting to hear Ford engineering give an explanation for the high transmission temp. After this video I paid attention to my trans temp and unloaded it was steady at 209. Even though you say we weren’t able to get a feel for the grades of the roads in your video, Your test was still relatively easy on both trucks. Many people would be pounding the gas pedal up those grades and coming down harder, makes me wonder what their temps are getting to? Even though us shade tree mechanics say “heat kills”, with the amount of engineering involved in designing the trans you have to believe they were well aware of the trans temps. Your simple short drive test raised questions quick.

A buddy just bought a 2023 2500HD with 6.6 gasser and the 6-speed. Pulls a toyhauler oaded with motorcycles (not nearly as big as what you pulled). After several trips to NM and southern Colorado, he lives it. Had it built with the interior he wanted (driver/passenger power/heated seats, heated steering wheel, and manual towing mirrors, sprar-in bedliner, anolog guages). Priced out at $58k. Very similar results on MPG to your tests. He's already added side steps and mudflaps. It's not a High Country, but it IS a very nice truck for that price. Dude did his research! A similar Ford F250 with the 7.3 was over $10k more at the time to build AND a longer wait time. Seems that price difference has come down but still the Chevy is cheaper. So, why are diesel owners in Colorado getting hosed? In NM and Texas diesel is the same or cheaper than gas.

Love your videos! I didn't read through all the comments, and I apologize if I missed you mentioning this little fact. The 6.6L Gasser was made to make it's power on 87 octane. Even in the manual it says 87 octane is recommended. That is the only HD gasser like that. The Godzilla will run on 87, but it's power rating is based on 91 octane, and even in the Ford manual it says 91 Octane or higher is recommended, same for the Ram Hemi engines. Just food for thought.

Great video!!! I'm glad the 6.6 can now hang with the Godzilla. Took it a few years to do so but that's fine. I do think Ford will answer back with more hp and torque. There is still plenty left in the bag for both motors. Ford did supposedly add the ports for direct injection for use in the future. And to be fair the Ford is available with a 430 gear which would probably give it the edge. I have both and love them both. The Chevy definitely rides better and seems to have better build quality. Trying not to be biased either way.

Great video series. I’m not terribly surprised by the results and your pick for the winner because I’ve had a 6.6 Chevy gas truck now for nearly 26,000 miles. Mine of course is the 6 speed but the motor is strong. It’s making over 400 foot pounds of torque from 2000-5000 rpm. To put that into context for people that’s more than any 5.3 or 6.0 truck V8 made at their peak and is very similar to what the first generation 6.2s made at their peak. So power is not a problem. I knew the 10 speed was going to make a huge difference in towing performance because of the gear spread. Currently the 6 speed wants to be in 3rd gear for most grades and for 6% and down it will stay around 3500 rpm and accelerate and everything is fine. 7% it won’t accelerate but it will hold speed and dip a little closer to 3000 rpm. The problem is you’re pretty much all in at that point because the 6 speed doesn’t have another ratio to give to get you to 4000 rpm. 2nd gear is too short and will push the motor over 5000 rpm and max out at about 65 mph and has to upshift. So I knew with the 10 speed having two extra gear’s between the 6 speeds 2nd and 3rd gears would be a HUGE improvement. Also as far as fuel mileage goes, I had a 2020 L5P and it got basically 2 mpg better in most instances than my current 2022 L8T. So this past weekend I went racing and ended up with a 176 mile round trip and 8.2 mpg average. On that same trip my diesel got 10.4-10.7 mpg. So fuel prices last Saturday were 3.15 for regular and 4.29 for diesel. So even if I take the high average for the diesel that trip would have cost me $70.71 in diesel and it cost me $67.80 in my gas truck. So you are dead on with the cost thing. Look forward to seeing more videos, especially of Big Red.

I have a 21' F350 Crew SB 4x4 6.2 10-speed 4.30. The transmission was terrible and had every issue that an auto can have ie. hard shifting, harsh engagement/disengagement, shift flare. I took it to my dealer with these complaints and they found a TSB. The truck is completely different now and I assume it's shifting like Ford intended. I had mostly GM 6.0 HD's over the 15 years but couldn't stomach a new 6.6 gas with 6-speed and 3.73's. I'm not brand loyal so I went to Ford and was starting to regret it but the TSB saved the day. I'm glad that fixed it for you. I think the torque shift is a great transmission. But ford has had some issues with quality control. The 6.2 is a great motor. And the 6.6 with the 10 spd, is fantastic. That changed the motor completely.

@@automotiveinquiries9673 I was disappointed with the 6.6 didn't come with the 10-speed. I knew they'd do it gradually but I couldn't wait any longer. I've been a big fan of these proven gas engines. GMs 6.0 was easy to own and Ford's 6.2 is the equivalent. The 10 gears and 4.30s makes towing easy. It definitely doesn't have the overall grunt of the 7.3 at wide open throttle but regular towing is a breeze with this truck.

Good series. I’m currently in the market. Have been looking at all the HD models. The Chevy 2500 LT Z71 definitely seems like the best bang for your buck in the industry at around 61k. Glad to see your test of the Custom kinda confirmed that. My only concern is the oil consumption. Trying to find out if Chevy has fixed that yet. Not a deal breaker, my current Chevy 1500 drinks oil. I must say I was surprised when I watched the towing videos, I honestly "assumed" before your series that the ford would put the chevy to shame towing and so that goes to show how much water my "assumptions" held up, they meant squat. Real world testing like this gave real world meaningful results. As another comment was said about the differing differential ratios between the trucks, that could have some bearing on the outcome but then again there are 10 gears as we are not talking 6 or going way back to 3 gears in an auto which then rear end ratios became everything. I could see the higher gearing of the Ford having some effect in empty fuel mileage but for all I know the Ford may have a more fuel efficient engine platform.

The Chevy has bigger tires so the gearing is super close taking that into account. The fuel mileage is very close and the Chevy only has 500 miles on it so far. The Chevy is quite a bit taller and doesn’t have a snow plow for an air dam that would get ripped off on a speed bump

Finally someone else mentions the transmission gearing instead of solely the rear end gearing. In his test, his Ford with the 3.55 was in 3rd gear and turning over 4500 rpm at about 65 mph. 3rd gear is a 2.13:1 ratio so that gives it a 7.56:1 final drive with his truck. 2nd is 2.91:1 so I seriously doubt he could have shifted to 2nd gear in that scenario (4500+ rpm 60+ mph). I’m sure someone will say the 4.30 would have done better but the reality is the 4.30 wouldn’t have been able to even go to 3rd there because it would have gave him a 9.15:1 final drive. The 4.30 would have been in 4th gear with a nearly identical 7.61:1 final drive as the 3.55 had in 3rd. So even the 4.30 in that scenario would have been at the same rpm and speed as what his truck did.

The Ford will put the Chevy to Shame the Chevy has GM’s best ratio, Put the 430s in the Ford and almost 22,000 pounds of towing, Watch the old TFL video the Ford beach the Chevy up the ike by three minutes plus that is a huge difference. They aren’t even in the same league when it comes to Mountain towing . I have Chevys at work three 2022s I don’t like them they’re too high the bed height the hood height all of it it’s all too high they’re very difficult to work on. You need a step ladder to check the oil the cab room is really nice on the Chevy. We have regular cabs I do not like GDI only fuel systems that’s a big negative I do not like that you cannot check the transmission oil huge negative. New GM, front suspension is far superior to the Ford for daily driving and feedback. There’s also translates into it being more stable tow vehicle. The solid front axle Ford just does not track as straight or true. I would buy the Ford just for the far superior visibility from the drivers seat especially over the hood and sides .
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnDiMartino 4.30 wouldn’t have made any difference in his test. See my above post but at the speed and rpm he was at in 3rd gear he would have been in 4th in the 4.30 with essentially the same results because the final drive ratio is nearly identical. The 4.30s purpose is slow speed, extreme off road type grades. There it would be superior to any of the other ratios. But at highway speeds and grades it doesn’t offer any advantage because the transmission is making it up by being able to downshift one extra gear as compared to the 4.30.
