Why do Gaspar Noé films make you sick? Why is Irreversible such a great film? Why did he tell the story backwards? What's up with his camera work? All that and more, with his 2002 film, Irréversible.
There were so many details I wished to point out but couldn't. Perhaps on patreon, but either way, enjoy!

Irreversible was one of the most horrifying movies I ever watched. Not because of the blood, the crazy cameras, the gore. But just because of that one scene in the underpass. Because girls, we all have been to places like that in our life, feeling unsafe, paranoid, easy prey. For me this was spot on - and I never want to see this movie again.

That was such a clever scene. It inspires helplessness in both men and women. Women can imagine it happening to them and men feel helpless to stop it. It's a horrifying 7+ minute ordeal. The way Noé got us to identify with the victim so potently is testament to his skill as a filmmaker and it's what makes that scene one of the most harrowing in cinematic history. That scene as the axis of the film like the centre of a clock positioned exactly halfway through the film is so poignant. I hate mindless sadism like hostel and much of contemporary horror. I love clever films like this. Irreversible is truly his magnum opus imo.

I remember watching this film and being slightly amazed at how insane the first half was and then how, frankly, boring the second half was. Then I started thinking maybe that's the point; To have us realize that the boring parts (as in, the mundane days of our lives) can actually be the most beautiful and sought-after parts depending on how you tell the story. Enjoy the boring days, people, because who knows what could lie ahead.

I don't think that people actually appreciate the boring stuff. I mean, I feel like I do but my life is literally made up of these times. I really really rarely have exciting shit to do, so the boredom and ennui is constant and terrible. This was changing before the lockdown, but then. Yeah. Shit happened, as usual. I don't know how I don't crack? I just... live and like living. My world is pretty small and that's okay.

That's exactly the point I got. What happened to her can't be undone. She lived a semi-normal life before, with good moments in it too. The viewer is supposed to juxtapose the last 1/3 of her average life with what happened to her and after. She will never live like that again. The scene may be the same, but she won't. Things like this happen all over the world everyday to women and worse thus it's not a film people can't separate from reality, and the rapists often get away with it. It's just... a very harrowing film.

There is a fascinating detail that nobody talked about in the underpass scene!!! About midway through the scene we could see a silhouette of a man coming in and we immediately think may be he will come into rescue , but he simply goes back the way he came!!!! Alex doesn’t see him but we do, we are the ones who are supposed to feel the hopelessness of that situation we,the audience, who really got assaulted in this scene. An incredible detail.

This was the first movie I saw that I "liked" and also knew I never wanted to see again. While a lot of those feelings dulled over time and I've ended up seeing some movies I swore I never would again... this one's just as strong as it's always been. Obviously the first half is brutal and the middle scene is one of the most unpleasant things I've ever watched, but it's really the second half that gets to me, because you're seeing every single mistake they make knowing exactly where it will lead, and I was sitting in my dorm room wanting to shout "NO DON'T! STOP!" in a way that I never do during horror movies.

I feel you strongly on this one- rlly didn't want to revisit it..ever. Yet life somehow laughs at your determination and tells you no, you will watch this 3 more times, and this will happen in a span of a single week. I had read something online about this movie that I had found pretty interesting, about how it plays with the rape and revenge genre by showing the story backwards. In the rape and revenge genre, we can distinguish 4 stages : introduction, assault, search for the assaulter, and revenge (and eventually a 5th one showing the afterwards). The usual emotional way the spectator goes through in this genre will be : they get to know the victim, build empathy for them during the introduction. Then, the assault scene will activate them emotionally making them angry, because "someone" they know is being attacked. Then, they are implied and motivated by the search for the assaulter, and the revenge feels deserved and is appreciated by the spectator, as it is a bad character getting what they deserve. SPOILERS With Irreversible, we start with this very violent and graphic revenge, we build no empathy for Marcus and Pierre since we don't know what motivates them and they just look like some angry and agressive dudes, amplified with these musics and sound that makes you anxious and nauseous that were explained in this video. then, the search for the assaulter doesn't catch our interest, since we already know who he is and how he will be punished, and once again, we see an angry and agressive guy, assaulting a witness because he is upset that she speaks spanish and not french and assaulting a taxi driver while calling him racial slurs, but this time Pierre is "on our side", trying to reason Marcus and convince him to go to the hospital see Alex, wich makes us even more frustrated that Marcus keeps going. When we found out about what happenned to Alex, the scene is gruesome, her face is barely visible under the floods of blood and we are told that she is in coma. It's immediately followed by this assault scene, and as we still have these horrendous images in mind (clever point), we see this scene of extreme violence, and we are somehow in the same position as Alex : we are being forced into an unbearable situation, that we can't stop, that is never ending, and that will stop only when the one submitting us to this situation will decide so. We are sitting there powerless to help, and already knowing the terrible consequences of this. So when we see these characters being happy, having fun and loving each other, we feel nothing but sorrow, and even if the film ends on the most hopeful and joyful note, we can't help but superpose the image of this blood maculated face on the smile of this woman finding out she is pregnant.

It’s definitely the most disturbing film I’ve seen but I had never seen such an appealing style of filmmaking up until this point. The cinematography, music, and lighting worked so well with me that it left me blown away. This is among my favorite movies ever made and I sometimes get the desire to watch this to experience the artistic aspects of this movie but I dread that one scene. Just watched it for the first time a few days ago and I had the same experience as you. While I've seen other filmmakers with wild styles that really appeal to me, Noé really knows what he's doing in terms of pushing psychological impact with his filmmaking. I've been thinking about the movie non-stop since I first watched it and have rewatched a few scenes (party scene, beginning of the Rectum scene, laying in bed scene) just to see the fantastic style again, but I totally don't know if I could watch the entire movie again soon. A true masterpiece, but probably not great to watch for some; I mean it is quite horrifying in the moment and ultimately extremely depressing. But, it's depressing in a way that really sticks with you and impresses you, not that just solely bums you out and that's it.

I'm a big fan of Noé. First time I saw "irreversible" with a friend of mine , we'd watch each other when the film ended , realizing we had been totally hypnotized falling in that vertigo of time being inverted... I mean , I never ever felt those unbelievable feelings of being taken in a modified understanding of normality. I know I'm probably unable to find the words... English not being my mother tongue and missing so much practice... For years I've asked many people about this awesome effect... You're the first i found talking 'bout that induced confused perception... "Irreversible" caused a huge scandal being thrown at Cannes , particularly for the ultra violent rape. This scene is uncomfortable... Because in fact , filmed by Noé , it provokes to a certain point , feelings we're not supposed to have...and that's creepy !

I've been a fan of Noe since Enter the Void came out On Demand in 2009, and as Visually Crushing as they can be you can never escape the feeling of a story being told in a unique way that no one would ever dare to do. I watched the film last night. I've seen a lot of comments saying they'll never watch it again and I agree. This is the first movie to really leave a traumatizing sensation. the camera being still throughout the tunnel scene leaves us paralyzed, helpless just like Alex. We feel every inch of movement. It's as close as we can get to the real thing. As raw as it is, people need to watch it to understand how truly horrible rape is.

There’s a theory that the perspective of camera is in fact that of the unborn child of Alex (the absent character known only to Alex). The snow at the end could then be seen as it’s “beginning”, themes of feminine creation and masculine destruction also thus bookend the story. A greatly thorough essay with new insights that I have not ever come across, well done!

Clever dissection. I have seen this once, in the cinema and found the experience...well, an experience of heightened senses. Analytically emphasizing the nuances..clockwise rotation - "irreversible" (..in a context..), the Hertz and it's comparative frequency are the subtleties not overly apparent in a single view. Naturally, the focus on the underpass..both as a graphic experience, somewhat(?) shared, and it's location of halfway in the runtime, and the underpass as symbolic of the alteration in all protagonists lives were relatively straightforward to grasp...the use of interweaving camerawork as an audience integrator with scenes, along with "glare" and focus are again subtleties not transparently obvious in a single viewing. So many seem to write of an experience they don't wish to revisit in the comments, yet so many feel compelled to express their horror whilst somewhat reliving the trauma of the film. The understated texture which you astutely recognize..the position of the camera to maximize sentiment during the underpass attack...does more to reflect on how Gasper Noe is a sensitive artist, of which very few directors could screen such brutality ensuring there is no reflective sentiment miscued or misplaced. He remains somewhat elusive in most discussions of contemporary cinema, and is often derided largely on the content he delivers or as an "impact" filmmaker. All descriptions of him are true, yet none dissect his work in technical methodologies that explain how everyone in the cineworld has an opinion on him..even casually...enfant terrible, badboy, schlock horror, etc.."all descriptions are true?"...he defies categorization...your synopsis as to how his unorthodoxy is constructed is quite brilliant
