I can’t believe people try to steal from this gas stations still. It’s like the new version of the wall of shame they had at my old job. Anytime someone got caught their picture went right if the wall with all the warrants listed that the shoplifters had. It’s was crazy, some of them were mugshots from the internet next to a screen capture of the act.

I stole a 5 cent candy from the penny candy store when i was a kid. It was my favorite little corner store, and the old man who ran it was a super nice guy. My father found out pretty quickly that i stole a candy, because being the dumb kid i was, i decided to eat it in the car. My father drove us Back to the store, made me walk in and tell the old man i stole it. He looked sad, asked me why I did it. Then after collecting payment from my Father, told me That i was no longer allowed in the store. Ill never forget the shame and guilt i felt all the way home and every time we passed that store i was no longer allowed in. Ive... never.. to this day, and im 40 now... stolen another item in my life.

In the 'mid-80s (before cameras), as a part-time job I worked at a 7/11 type store (FoodPlus) with 2 pumps - on my own. It was more strenuous mentally than my 8-hour job. I think back and just know there was a lot of theft under my watch. It would have been cheaper if another employee was employed to purvey the store. The business went bankrupt.

The police would send them away unless there was an open and active warrant for arrest. A police officer needs to witness the crime themselves or apply for an arrest warrant.

Go to your local police station, and let them know you stole something. You'll be fine clearly like you say, since it didn't really happen and they didn't witness anything..
