@@MercenaryPen Chris only gives once source for this, hardle proof it was compon place, and loco can become a bad steamer if worn, or fired wrong, or handled badly by the driver. Id be interested in reading/hearing of other footplates crews experiences with the E2x if anyone knows of any. All the chaps I knew who where footplatemen where either ER or LMR crews.

Their predicesors were rough riders to. Seams quite common with 060t locos if not balanced properly, as they aint exactly built for high speed. 40mph was prob the max they could be expected to run, even if they could go faster, but suspect even at 40 they were quite "bouncy"

If Thomas is a E2, he must be a heavily modified one so you know he would’ve still been in use by 2011, the year that last RWS book is set

It's kind of sad to realize that the locomotive Thomas was based on wasn't all that useful in real life. You'd think they'd at least save one, especially since the design got popularized by Thomas.

by the time the books and TV were popular, the E2 was already gone. besides, who would want a heavy, uncomfy, hungry shunter that was useless over 5mph?

@@pilotbug6100 I’m for a new build to deliver on what the E-2 was meant to provide but couldn’t - a mixed traffic tank engine. I can already imagine the redesign would un ironically mimic the character design by shortening the wheel base, lowering the center of gravity, and enlarging the coal bunker and that’s before boosting the steaming efficiency with additions like a super heater. In hindsight, similar to Henry, the E-2’s were built with far too small coal reserves and janky optimization

@@watch50er I like to think Thomas is a experimental not passed by LBSCR, with a 10 foot wheelbase for the tight curves at Southampton, he proved unsuccessful and was sold off to Hatt during the first world war.

I don't think the visual limits are a significant issue, content like this is as enjoyable and interesting for me. I presume it is also easier to produce, and far less limiting in options.

I have no problems with repeating footage, Chris. Please do more of these; this one was really enjoyable. Certainly wasn't expecting to see N&W 611 creep in among some of the other American locomotives. :)

To my knowledge, their top speed is 60MPH, though why anyone would want to do that in a 0-6-0T engine predominantly used for shunting and short goods traffic is somewhat beyond me.

@@islesofforeignrails7917 He cries about them in fanfics, sometimes. Many don't mention them, but usually when they do come up, he's sad. I got a fanfic buddy who thinks his sad face is the worst one because he's so expressive. It may be just a sometimes thing, but quality makes up for quantity. My buddy said if she's reading something in which he gets sad, she sees him in her mind with the saddest look on his face. I'm Thomas sensitive, so when I read or create fics in which he cries, I feel bad if it's not a happy cry. Tears of joy happens to engines in fanfics, including my Thomasverse, like when Thomas arrived at his branch line (an example of tears of joy in my Thomasverse).

@@kdrfcgaming7902 I did that when I was about 4 and kept it up for years, until somewhere between my 8th birthday and 12th. I remember watching a Christmas Thomas episode on video at 8 or so, but by my 12th birthday, I was over him until last May when I got all nostalgic because of Henry political cartoon a Facebook friend sent me. He made it, the cartoon.

I know that he reviews mostly British locomotives with the most American locomotives being the USATC engines but I sincerely would find it interesting if he branched of to do a miniseries of American locomotives, if not just to hear his voice talk about the streamers across the pond

I can imagine that Sir Topham Hatt was able to modify most of his engines to be more adequate. There's no other way he would be operating steam trams, experimental models locomotives and ancient frames to this day.

I think the NWR was in the same boat as the Southern. I mean, why else would Sir Topham Hatt have low-quality coal, or, if he had an infinite supply of money, why didn't he give welsh coal to his entire steam roster? Why else would Sir Topham Hatt buy BoCo, a Class 28, which was an unreliable diesel locomotive, and Bear, a non-standard Class 35? Why weren't there any dedicated goods engines until Donald and Douglas came along? And how come almost all dedicated freight yards on Sodor are located on branch lines?

This was pretty interesting, in all honesty. I usually put these videos on in the background and listen to the audio, until a visually relevant moment comes up. So if you did one or two more of these, perhaps giving backstory to new builds that are under construction/functionally extinct, I'd enjoy them!

More please Chris. I find it far more interesting watching stuff about the more obscure and forgotten classes than watching something about the Black 5s for example where the info is everywhere. Besideds it your knowledge and delivery that makes these good in my eyes, not the visual content

Very nicely done there Chris. As a Southern enthusiast this is right up my street. And I can definitely see where you’re coming from on why you hesitate to make a slips episode on extinct engines, but I would still like to see you have a go if at all possible. I think it would be very interesting and something different. Perhaps maybe you could look at the Brighton Atlantic’s maybe

Definitly like this as a light series similar to the Sole Slip episodes. Might be good to either highlight lost gems or in comparison to upcoming reconstructions Heck, if the T1 trust can ever show more than hope, I fully expect something like this on the T1 duplexes from someone similar who does american locos (Or in may just do one myself: ecpect a lot of Lionel footage used)

I'm glad you made this video, I'm very passionate about the history of the E2s. I always hear people say the E2s weren't very good in fuel capacity. I think your opinions were far, and i agree with all of them. Thank you, learned a lot.

Good vid, Chris, very well researched and presented. Loved the Brennan bit. :-D Poke at the Leader mistake was funny. Why poke the Lada? My Dad's old one beat a BMW in a race once......well, it was tuned in his own garage. :-D Doing these video's with mostly photographs still works for me if it helps.

I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t say produce the “didn’t make it” films all the time. Maybe 2 or 3 a year tops, if the locomotive in question is either interesting or there seems to be a lot of people that like them

The E2 feels like the Crusader tank of steam engines, it looks good, but was ineffective in practice.

Interesting, I recently walked past one of those Thomas children’s ride things in a shopping centre. ‘That coal bunker’s a bit small’ I thought, ‘he’s not going to get far on that’. While I’m sure the real thing wasn’t quite as small I had no idea what Thomas was based on, but he does seem to share the coal capacity problems of the prototype.

Thanks for explaining about the E2 I've been always wondering why non of them Survived and it makes sense but they did last for a pretty long time which is nice to know how they're lifespan lasted Especially for shunting and now it all makes sense why they didn't Survive they were as good as they were intended to be they had a bad ride travel a boiler that would go to overdrive, not a good fuel capacity, and not a good ride in passenger trains so it makes sense why they aren't hear any more because no one wanted one. Thank you for sharing this information

Great Video! A thing that would interest me is why there always seems to be a consistant step between the platform and the train on the british rail network? And why don‘t the seem to change it to make trains more accesseble? I think that could be worth a video.

I'd definitely watch more of these even with limited visuals, personally I enjoy hearing about one-offs and oddball engines just as much as ones that are still around, there's a lot to be learned even from failures. If I had to pick one to drive, however, I'd definitely want a good 'un over a bad one.

Awesome video!! I really enjoyed it!! And as a American I love that you added 4014 at the end. English locomotives are beautiful and very elegant but nothing on rails is as grand (except maybe the German Schwerer Gustav) as UP 4000's. Would love to see a video on those, or a video of "why English loco are like this vs American loco like that". P.s. if you did a video on ww1/ww2 railway artillery, that would be awesome too!

There are a lot of locomotives that don't exist that would be great to see histories of, but for most of them it is likely there is little to no footage for use. However, there's got to be enough material for say, a GWR Metro tank video.

I was wondering what happened to the E2s so I don't mind at all. I hope you can do another one. From the last two photos I was wondering, do you do American locomotives? If you do can you do a Gauge the Issue on the Triplexes?

LNER L1 tanks? One distant day in late 50's I was watching from the footbridge at Bush Hill Park (Liverpool St suburban) when up train appeared with the usual N7 (bunker first) replaced by a fairly clean L1(chimney first) on, I assume, a running-in turn. Been fascinated ever since and the scene is still etched in my mind 60+ years later.

Can I say something without offending anyone?- joking, but the LBSC is my favourite pre grouping railway because of livery, engines and where I have anscestory, but people think it’s my favourite because of Thomas, WHICH IT IS NOT! So I sometimes keep that opinion to my self.

Chris, I would say this differing content (from SLIP and Sole-SLIP fare) is very welcome. I would suggest perhaps doing a loose series on say new builds yet to be completed or even new builds that you (or we!) would like to see built... start with the LSWR H16 type that the Urie Loco Soc are publicly mooting! Anyways whatever you do I'm sure it will be as entertaining and enjoyable as ever.

They are thinking about maybe building a new E2 tank engine in the future. I forget where but who knows if it's happening. Also, GO T1 TRUST!!

Both projects have embarrassingly ridiculous goals in mind. One to build another “Real Live Thomas” from the wheel up (to paraphrase Simon Martin), and one to break Mallard’s speed record. The biggest problem with the latter being the class of locomotives had way too many wheel slips to even consider the possibility of breaking such a record.

@@AndrewHager02 the problems are worth bringing back the past from the dead. We brought back a British engine from the dead, we can do it again. We also brought back the world's largest steam engine back to life too. Even if there are problems, the thought of bringing back a train from the dead is all worth it for all the railfans

I mean, if you believe a new PRR T1 will be able to break the speed record once the project’s completed, more power to you. I, on the other hand, understand why such a goal isn’t likely to be reached by such a steam engine. But come to think of it, if they, by luck, manage to fix the wheel slip problems with the new T1, I could imagine its haulage capacity being useful for long trains in mix trafficking services.

@@AndrewHager02 the railfans aren't going for speed nowadays for steam engines even if they're streamed in the US, what we're going for is to just see the engines of the past roll again. The E2 will most likely just turn out to be a display piece and not actually run and the T1 will have excursion trains. We're not going for speed, just all and all bringing the past back.

Ok, Fair point. SLIPS wouldn't work on a loco type that doesn't exit anymore. But... You could do a run down "top ten" style video of your favourite / the most influential / the saddest losses of types which no longer exist.

He didn't, Thomas was originally going to be a different engine. But Reginald Payne (Illustrator of the second Railway Series book, Thomas the Tank Engine) made Thomas an E2 instead, and Awdry went with it.

@@bluengine1258 Not the best choice to say the least, could have gone with a 3F Jinty, an Austerity, an N7, or any other famous tank locomotive of the time. But that's just me. But then again, the show has since lost its realism touch, since Whiff and Emily are depicted doing work they weren't designed to do (i.e. pulling heavy goods trains.) It was in Chris's other videos that I learned that the engines both Whiff and Emily were based on were not designed for heavy goods. Realistically, the episode "Emily in the Middle " shouldn't have happened. It would have made more sense to have had Murdoch pull that pipe train instead.

TheKilroyman - The show lost its realism since the 5th season, really. I mean, why would the Skarloey engines run away at speeds of 100mph away from Boulder when they were never built to do that.

@@NWR1991 yeah agreed. After Britt Alcroft lost control of the show it went downhill. Seasons 6 and 7 are pretty much forgotten about as far as the Classic Series goes.

One thing I will say is that Thomas is what give me my love of trains I was practically raised on the show so while I understand fully that the E2 was not the best locomotive and it certainly wouldn’t be my first choice a shunting engine it has served well as an entry point to many young people that nowadays rarely ever get to see real steam trains

What I'd like to see as a result of the preservation movement is a new-build of an E2, but built to a better specification, so that it is actually viable for passenger use, and so that preserved railways can have a real Thomas to use for accuracy on their Days Out, and to bring more kids (and moolah) in as a result of the "real Thomas the Tank Engine" appearing at X railway. I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't been done yet.

A Sharp Stewart 4-4-0's built in 1880-83 for The Dutch East Indies state railway managed to work for 93 years, in some cases outliving younger German machines with the same wheel arrangement Only one survived into preservation

If he talks about the 4014, he has to talk about ALL the Big Boys. There's 8 out of 25 built, and unless UP plans to masquerade 4014 as 4019 with smoke deflectors for a bit, the episode may be a little bit dull, due to 4014 being the only operational Big Boy. Plus, Chris needs MONEY!!! Flying from the UK to the US is not cheap. And there's the hotel costs, fuel costs if they go chase it for a bit, maybe a number of tickets to ride behind it, etc.
