Gauntlet (Arcade) - Wizard Play

9 жыл бұрынSo I think I found something that'll work better than Bandicam... especially for longer videos.
That said, here's a longer video of me playing Gauntlet as the wizard.
I'm no expert at the game and pretty much just play for fun.. so I have the game set to give me 2000 health 'per coin'. 'Put in 5 coins' and went from there..
Always played as the wizard in Gauntlet when I was young for some reason or other.. probably because everyone I played with always wanted to be warrior... and the elf just looked silly to me with that bright green getup he wears.
On the Amiga, by the way. Never owned it for the NES, thankfully.. after seeing gameplay of that, or any other console.
Looking forward to trying out the wizard and valkyrie in the reboot. :)

i absolutely adore the graphics of the arcade version. the drop shadows and pcm voices rival the best 16 bit stuff from the mid 90s and this game is from 1985

How about cleaning the level before hitting exit? That one is satisfying too, like cleaning a very dirty rug.

This game is well before my time but i still have such fond memories of it. Born in the late 90s I used to play this as a kid on a homemade arcade machine that my dad built for me and my brother. This, bomberman, and some sidescrolling game with robots with big drills were my favourites. Been looking for this for ages!

Yes -- you usually get that warning when your health drops below 200. If you have some extra power potions you sometimes hear the warning: "(Character name) -- ALL YOUR POWERS WILL BE LOST". 😊

I have fond memories of playing this game with my 3 friends before we went to watch a movies at Westworld in Sydney. I liked how you could put another coin in to get more health without dying. Was a cool game in the 1980's and its amazing how graphics has changed over the last 30 years

Oh, yes, the extra coins, trying to beat the countdown. It was 25 pesetas (the long defunct currency) here.

This is my favorite game I love playing. I love playing with the Wizard first, then Valkyrie, and the Elf, and last the Warrior.

I remember how cool it was to use the potion when playing as the wizard. Everything just vanished from the screen.

I’m old enough to remember playing this game at an arcade back in the ‘80’s. It always cracked me up when I’d get scolded for accidentally shooting the potion - just like here at 1:13:18.

Or the food! In fact, "Remember, don't shoot food!" was one of the very first English sentences I learnt, since I also played this game as a kid back in the 80s.

Ive always thought the Wizard talking to himself as he was fighting hand to hand was hilarious! Im sure he says "Bad Magician!" 😂

Green elf with all the potion upgrades was by far the strongest character then a tie between Blue Valkyrie and Red Warrior. Sadly, as fond as I am of wizards, in Gauntlet they were the weakest. Coolest, yes. But weakest.

Yes -- the wizard has excellent magic power, but he stinks in hand to hand combat -- he cannot destroy the monster generators with his bare hands, which is important when there are enemies between you and the food jugs -- you have to be careful not to destroy them with your shots.

It's interesting how each level is just a different version of the same game, with different varieties of challenges, like a diagonal hallway filled with demons shooting back.

@12:20 did you know you can shoot generators "off the diagonal" through a crack if you back off and fidget around a bit until your firebolt squeezes through the crack off center?

Yes and shoot death 5 times on level 7 to get 8000 points per death, per potion. Actually you can do that on any level, but level 7 is the first encounter with a death. Careful not to shoot death again after that.

There's a challenge for you hardcore gamers: > Only 1 credit > Clear the level until it's 0 enemy generators left before you can exit > See how long can you last... if you can last perpetually, then you got the true hardcore gamer award

how many levels are there (I know it never stops, but when does it loop?)

thesnare100 I don't think anyone has a specific number of maze layouts, other than 'over a hundred'. And after playing through them all, they do indeed loop.. only they are flipped either horizontally or vertically, and are in a different order.

There's 107 levels, not counting the first seven or the ten treasure rooms.

The levels start flipping vertically and/or horizontally after you have gone through them all.

114 levels exactly, but only levels 8-114 loop (and wrap horizontally AND vertically once you reach 115). 1-7 never repeat after you did them.

The game continues until you quit. MAME allows you to save, on some versions at least. I have passed level 1000 and the game displayed it as 000. The score at 10 million gets displayed like 0000000. I did that on 1 credit by the way.

Go to planetemu (dot) net/roms/amstrad-cpc-games-dsk?page=G find Gauntlet, download the version you like (download=Telecharger 'cos it's a french site). Now go to winape (dot) net/downloads.jsp and download the latest Amstrad emulator (now it's v2.0b2). All you have to do now is to unzip emulator to a folder, and then move the Gauntlet zip file to this folder and unzip it too. Launch Winape, press File -- Drive A -- Insert Disk image, then browse the "Gauntlet (1986)(US Gold)[a][cpm version].dsk" file in, and check: "Automatically Run Program". That's it.

They don't make games like this anymore. If they released this game again but for PC with no changes at all, then it would be an instant best seller. The new games made today are just trash compared to the oldies.

wonder if you hack mame roms, so that the health total wouldn't go down even if you don't get hit, no matter how good you are in this game you'll eventually die of that. It would be a good test of skill that way.

good players never die in Gauntlet, you can build the health indefinitely. I have been over 100000 health. It was displayed 00000 then when I ate a food it looked like 00100 and so on.

It was one of the first games to have vocals. the tech was in its infancy back then. An amazing game for the time and still is better than many of those dungeon crawlers we see today on Steam.
