Woohoo! Successful mating by the Newsome Twosome on the Loch Arkaig Osprey nest 17 May 2021

This clip shows Blue 152 arriving at 09.52.53 followed by The Stranger at 09.53.40. There’s a bit of coy mantling and then at 09.56.50 he mounts, she raises her tail and successful mating takes place. Fantastic! Is it too late for eggs this season? Probably but not impossible. After a half hearted second attempt, he departs at 19.03.18 followed by her at 10.06.09.

Glen Affric is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and home to some very spectacular ancient Caledonian pinewood. This is the first sighting of her or any of that brood since ringing so the ringer was very pleased to hear about her.

UPDATE 18/5/2021 - Blue 152 background info: Blue 152 is one of a brood of two females and a male ringed on 5 July 2018 in Glen Affric, which is about 25-30 miles (as the osprey flies) due north of Loch Arkaig. Glen Affric is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and home to some very spectacular ancient Caledonian pinewood. This is the first sighting of her or any of that brood since ringing so the ringer was very pleased to hear about her. This pair is The Stranger who appeared on the nest for a few days before Louis arrived back on 11th April, and Blue 152 who is a 2018 or 2019 Scottish female. When Louis returned, The Stranger took himself off to a nest without a camera by Bunarkaig, I think it's on private land, not belonging to Woodland Trust. Blue 152 first appeared on 25th April, came a couple of times then we didn't see her for a couple of weeks until she turned up with The Stranger. Louis is with a new female, probably the unringed female who appeared briefly on the nest on 18th April, and they're on another non-camera nest, about two miles from this one.

@@carolgreene8757 It is theoretically possible that this pair might produce eggs this season, but be warned that as they're inexperienced parents and he doesn't seem to be providing much fish despite her calls, that any resulting chicks might not make it..

Morning Geemeff - was there any activity on the nest yesterday - 18th - did look for a video but no new video yesterday....last one I found was the first fish as couple days ago........hope they have not departed!!!! K

As you say, not the season we hope for, but the YP was evicted from this nest by Louis, so can't blame him for deciding it may not be the home for him. As for Louis and his new Mrs, she could perhaps sense the Aila connection and decided she'd rather have a new home for this new pairing so no competing with past memories.🤷‍♀️ As for us, we have the info from Geemeff, WTGeorge and the wonderful LizB on not just one, but now two pairs at Arkaig so truly this year is a success of its own and with the potential of some of Louis and Aila's earlier broods returning next year I think Arkaig is blessed. What a legacy and such a success story really.

Thank you for your optimism and pragmatic outlook! Nature does as it wills and we can only observe, sometimes good, sometimes not, but not everyone finds that easy to accept, and some commenters seem quite distressed, judging by posts left on my and other recorders' video clips.

20th May 2021 - Blue 152 visited the nest again and stayed for about 25mins (09:22 onwards).

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered together here in the face of this company - to join together this male and this female osprey in holy matrimony, which is commended to be honorable among all birds; and therefore - is not by any - to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly - but reverently, discreetly, advisedly and solemnly.

Here we are 3 years later - we know that Affric and Prince are still together - but do have their troubles - and they're not on nest 1 but probably at Bunarkaig

Yes! Our wish came true today Geemeff! That looked like a successful mating! Notice, she still shrieks for some fish , awkward moment @ 5:19 😀 Hopefully they will stay & he will bring her a fish or three 🙂♏🌲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💫

Yes, Louis is still around, he's over at one of the non-cam nest platforms in the area with his new mate, looks like they're incubating eggs.

No, that's not Louis, this is a young stranger, see pinned comment. Blue 152 is a young 2018 or 2019 female.

Sul pirelllne dj milano i tre pulletti... ormai giovani... stanno facendo l’involo!!! sono cresciuti in frettadante, beatrice e aria!!! piumaggio stupendo , affamati ed ora da ieri sera non dormono distesi nel nido!!! si stanno conquistando la loro liberta’! qua ancora niente?

Nessuno sta usando questo nido ora, tranne Blue 152 e The Stranger che visitano di tanto in tanto No one using this nest now but Blue 152 and The Stranger do visit from time to time
