Brilliant episode! Sally Ride is an amazing woman. My favourite tidbit about her is that before one of her week long trips to space NASA packed her 100 tampons and weren't sure it would be enough. (its FAR too many, FYI) Also apparently they tied them all together like a string of sausages!!

My year 5 classroom had a timeline of all the major people who went to space and I’m pretty sure she along with the Russians were on there and I remember feeling so inspired by those women. It makes my little lesbian heart happy to know that one of my childhood heroes was also lgbt

I really like this, she was an amazing women and you explained her life perfectly. Sally Ride was the third out of the 65 women who have been to space (there have been 566 people to go) and she is a real inspiration.

This is an amazing episode. I would like to add that I had the privilege of having Sally Ride for my neighbor for at least a year. She was an amazing individual and I’m forever grateful to had her in my life, even if it wasn’t long.

James could be the first gay man in space, Corry could be the first bisexual in space and Luke would be there to make it all exist, great video, always makes me laugh

Great podcast! You're right, flight experience was a significantly higher priority in astronaut selection than a science background...they figured it would be easier to teach science to pilots than train scientists to fly. That's why nearly all the astronauts in the pre-shuttle programs were current or former military, in particular fighter pilots. The military culture and "good ol' boy" attitude around the whole thing played a part in keeping women out of consideration for a long time. also, just good old-fashioned sexism. By the time the shuttle program was created, they were starting to include more specialized scientist roles on flights which led to the inclusion of more women in the field.

Fun Fact: Tam wasn’t Sally’s first girlfriend. Her first girlfriend (known to us) was her roommate Molly Tyson. She was 20, while Molly was 19.
