DIY CNC Modernization of an Old Universal Milling Machine
The base machine is an romanian Infratea Oradea FUS 200 mill. It's really similar to machines like Deckel FP1 / GHA Alexander "Master Toolmaker" / Prvomajska ALG 100 / Stankoimport 676 / AVIA FNC25 / Schaublin 13.
This is a video showing the process of modernization of the milling machine from the state where it was a bit refreshed to the moment where it fully works and some tests were made at the end of the video.
The 3D model and wiring diagram are available for my patrons here on KZfaq and Patreon.com.
The whole process including refreshing the machine from a scrapyard condition to a working CNC took about 8 months. The CNC modernization took about half of that time.
I was thinking about building a CNC milling machine from scratch but I found this little machine (~900kg / 1980lbs) for ~$800. So I decided to give it a try.
Firstly during the disassembly process I took some measurements so I could make a 3D model out of it. This made things much easier later when I was designing the mechanical part of it.
This project cost me about ~$3600 including the base machine, SFU1605 ball screw for Y axis and DFU2505 ball screws for X and Z axis, some aluminium and steel stock for essential parts like motor mounts / ball screws adapters, chinese 750W AC servos in each of all 3 axis, pulleys, some tools I didn't have, a VFD for the spindle motor, an incremental encoder for rigid tapping, lots of electrical devices, cables, paint, pump motor and some more things I probably even don't remember. Also my girlfriend sacrificed her old desktop computer to put it in the machine (I love you ❤️).
I hope you enjoyed the video and the building process! If you did - please share it with friends. This might let me to continue my hobby :)

Thanks for watching!
Basic parameters:
- Spindle - 1.9 [kW] / 50-2800 [RPM]
- Movement range X/Y/Z - 246/165/280 [mm]
- Axis Servos 80ST-M02430 750 [W] 3000 [RPM]
- Feed speeds (5000 [mm/min] in X/Y/Z) - This machine could run even 7500 [mm/min] but I find it just too fast. Probably smaller servos like 400W with right pulleys would be enough for feed speeds for a small machine with a slow 2800 [RPM] spindle
- Ball screws in all axis - SFU1605 on Y and DFU2505 on X/Z.
- AXBB-E Controller with UCCNC software (ethernet connection)
- Rigid Tapping ability using incremental 200PPR encoder on the shaft
- Table with two 700 [N] gas springs to make the Z axis run easily with same feeds as Y and X
- HTD 5M 15 [mm] timing belt pulleys (2:1 ratio speed reduction)
- DIY Human-Machine-Interface Panel.

They always support and help me with my work if necessary :)
@AdamMaszynotwor This guy is sharing his knowledge including machining, DIY CNC topics etc. I'm really grateful - I learned a lot of basics from him which made possible to make my first steps in the DIY CNC world.
CNCdrive.com - the AXBB-E controller from them is a really great choice for CNC projects. The ethernet connection of this controller to the PC is really immune to electric noise made by AC drives like the VFD etc. It makes the machine to be really stable when it comes to the control software and hardware. Now I'm using the UCCNC which I find really great - all the configurations seems to be simple - including the manuals.

With so many surplus machining centers already out there, pre-engineered to be computer controlled, why spend so much time and energy “re-engineering” a manual machine to be CNC? 90% of your effort is misspent when you could just upgrade an old controller and end up with a far better machine.

Nice to see a real Milling machine with proper cast iron chassis and dovetail slides converted to CNC. I was trying to explain the difference to a numpty between this and those stupid ball slide rail setups which result in a glorified Routing machine IMO...🤔😳😏...Kudos for your multi talented skills...🤔😏😀🇬🇧
@GBWM_CNC
@GBWM_CNC Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like it! There are pros and cons of dovetails. For super heavy cuts proper dovetails are great if the geometry is ok. But the ball rails can achieve much higher speeds as there is some other kind of friction. Depends what you need! :)
@EnglishTurbines
@EnglishTurbines Жыл бұрын
@@GBWM_CNC Yes, agreed. Having spent 21 of my earlier years Milling, I'm old School. I know ball slides have little friction, but they also don't absorb vibration or tolerate heavy cuts. When milling the mount everest .. The axis make a lot of very small movements. That leads to break up of the oil film between the sliding parts of the bedways. In the end it will cause fretting of bedways. Either lube the bedways a lot to prevent that. Or , like I do , program each so many lines a longer movement in z axis, than y and x and back to point where it was. With that oilfilm thickness is restored again

kawał dobrej roboty ;) jakieś plany na kolejne realizacje - zdradzisz coś czego możemy się spodziewać?
@GBWM_CNC
@GBWM_CNC Жыл бұрын
@marcinranoszek64
@marcinranoszek64 Жыл бұрын
@@GBWM_CNC no też to dostrzegłem że brak piły. 😅
@GBWM_CNC
@GBWM_CNC Жыл бұрын
@@marcinranoszek64 Noo plazma albo nawet laser też mi chodzi po głowie :D Tylko musiałbym warsztat powoli powiększać. Moja frezarka ma też małe pole obróbki więc plazma byłaby niezłym dopełnieniem :)
@marcinranoszek64
@marcinranoszek64 Жыл бұрын
@@GBWM_CNC no zdecydowanie plazma ułatwia pracę jak robi się jakieś prototypy. Gdybys miał jakieś pytania to pisz.
