One of the best investments ive made was one of those sewer jetter hoses for a pressure washer. I used to have issues with drains backing downstairs in my house and after hiring a plumber a few times, enough was enough. What was truly shocking was the sheer volume of "debris" that builds up in the pipes over the years. Everyone always blames the toilets but what surprised me was how much buildup was caused by the laundry. All that fine fiberous stuff slowly accumulates into literal bricks of fiber that plug everything up.

I agree with your assessment. It is always far better to prevent the water from getting anywhere near the building. It is good to have both active (drains) and passive (sloping) systems in case the drains get clogged. I would add mesh to the sidewalk. Helps prevent unwanted cracking. But would require a pumper.

Always enjoy the Gate City Foundation videos. It’s so fascinating because we can all relate to water issues. My Mom always said, “water seeks its own level”. You bring peace to your customers. Harvey’s crew and yours are true professionals. Thank you Shawn. Happy New Year!

Thank you Coen! I like to work with water instead of against it. By creating the new low point water will seek it out.

Nice job, really thought out with moving the water away from the building instead of guiding it towards it in the old situation.

Logic would say, that you creating the low point, puts control in your hands. Great video. I've never known or thought about the location of a grate like the one you removed.

The finish result was great, that existing strip drain is a disaster waiting to happen. I would still put reinforcing steel in the concrete. Consider it cheap insurance. Also would note the method of cutting into the bigger pipe for the drainage basin, can be improved and more efficient, we use a 4 inch Snap T junction, you just glue it on and drill out center, quick fit and reinforces the pipe too. Worth a google look. Even though one pipe is 8 inch and a different size pipe, we just use a heat gun to soften it and spread it over the bigger pipe, using a leather glove, great invention. Thanks for sharing, from Down Under!

Yeh Down Under must have a AS Standard for Re-Bar hey ? The Council Plans shouldnt have allowed the building to be set so low against a hill in the first place

I have a very similar situation. House sits below street level. I catch all that water. I tried my own french drain. My house doesnt flood, but i would still like to keep the water from pooling at the door. This video is probably exactly what I need. The grade of the land sweeps from the high corner to the opposite low corner. So a regrade wouldnt be much effort.
