An overnight camping trip in the rain. On this trip, I used a Jerven Fjelduken Original as my shelter. It is a thermal cloak and can be combined with Tent Ends to form a nice sized 2 man pup/baker tent. The tent is thermally lined with a heat reflecting lining. It warms up with your body heat. Very interesting piece of gear, that is also highly multifunctional.

Wicked video Jess. I prefer the kidney bottles and cup. Great to see the Alfa1 bottle mate, definitely a winner! Love the light weight of the thermal tent too. A shallow trench, bout 2", around the edges to put the skirt of it below ground and back filled stops the lil' stingers sneakin' under. With the old canvas military tents we used to pile sand against or put branches along the base. Being square to the ground made it more difficult especially in high winds. They had ties, not zippers, so the mozzies were a real bastard too. The one you've used here beats those problems with the obvious added benefits. All these things you're showing us make it 'tooo easy' for people to get back to nature... back in touch with what really matters. An absolute winner mate... Cheers. 💜👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen

@@UniversalSovereignCitizen Hey Brother, much appreciated. Thanks for the tips on the skirt of the tent. That makes sense. The mosquitoes have been THICK this year. We don’t have summer here, it’s called Bug Season 😂 First wave is mosquitoes, then No See Ums, then Deer Flys (bastards). Kind of funny, can almost tell the time by what bug is biting. Cheers Bro 🤝

*Dude!* I have no idea where you came up with the idea to use a folding, stainless steel, perforated steamer basket for an improvised twig stove, but I really like the concept. As a retired chef I can readily see both the advantages and disadvantages of the steamer basket as a twig stove and without ever having used one the advantages probably outweigh the drawbacks. *Great video, by the way!*

The idea's been floating around some German KZfaq channels for some years. But I would not be surprised if it is a lot older than that, it is just too simple & good!

I used one 25+ years ago and added a small cooling rack as a grill rack. Probably around 1996 I started in the back yard with charcoal and cooked a burger to test the idea out before dragging it into the woods on a trip.

@@couchcamperTM Really it all came down to playing with one that a buddy had and I thought this would be a good portable grill versus the larger fire needed for a folding grill rack that were $5 at the time. But I also had a small enamel bowl that I carried as a wash basin/sink for shaving, dishes and other hygiene. That I would either use on the ground or do a quick tripod lash 1/3 of the way down and set the bowl in there. Everything (cooking and cleaning) packed down into the bowl and then slid into a tight fitting bag. Food was almost always packed separately unless an overnight which was always a smaller load out. I still have the bowl and still use it for shaving rather than filling the sink. It’s just easier to me.

I love those baker/pup tents. I also really enjoy the FDF sleeping pad, I ended up duct taping the edges to keep them from fraying a bit. The extra flaps are perfect for these kinda tents and ponchos.

👍👍👍 Good Morning Jess .. another good one .. 'soos vir normaal' aka 'as usual' (the former, a term used by our instructors during my military training .. "gaan aan soos vir normaal / carry on as usual" 😁). You know Jess, everything goes in cycles .. what is 'in' today, will not be tomorrow and 'out' yesterday, 'in' today, and currently the 'greatest thing since the invention of bubblegum' .. until something else replaces it 😁. Pack Systems .. I see a gradual move back to 'Modular Systems' .. Pouches around the waist, complemented by a smaller Pack on the back and even a Chest Pack. Away from the bigger 'all in one' backpacks that have dominated the market for quite a while. Shades now, of my military setup from the late 60's into the 80's .. 'Kidney Pouches, Water and Ammo Pouches around the waist, supplemented at times by a small 'Patrol Pack' on the back. 'What goes around, comes around' .. how else would 'stuff' be able to be marketed as 'new / the latest' and sold? 😏. As I have mentioned before, the Folding Steamer Bowl makes for quite a neat Fire Tray 👍. Here in Switzerland, at IKEA, they are sold as the 'KLOCKREN' Steamer Insert for under $10 .. worth another look 🤔. Should I, I would leave on the foot pieces. Together, with my Tatonka 18cm SS Bowl, serving as a 'water bath' to protect sensitive surfaces. The Swiss are quite sensitive regarding any Philistine of a Foreigner 'carbonising' their Forest Floors .. the ever-vigilant 'Swiss Grannies' 🙄😁 .. and in this case, quite rightly so! "Thanks for watching" .. my pleasure, my Friend and to you, "thanks for sharing". Take care .. Tommy.

Hey Tommy! Thank you. You know, honestly, I don’t really follow too many bushcraft channels other than my friend Alex from Bushcraft Adventure. Swedwoods and Bertram from time to time. That being said, I really couldn’t say what is the current thing. I have dabbled with the belt setups for awhile, here and there. I found out I really like how it supported my pack. About 6 months ago, I was loaded up pretty heavy with a 60L bag, snow shoes on, moving a camera around filming and heard/felt a loud pop in my mid back. I had too much load on my shoulders, rather than my hips. That was about the time I started digging into the HATKA 12L, which was comfortable. Pairing it up with the ASKARE hip pack was even better. Adding water and a few other things to the waist has been convenient, while continuing to load hips. Back is doing much better. Been doing a lot of hanging, putting myself in traction. Modified my exercise regimen to reduce loading spine. I will continue to work on it for the next few months and then perhaps this fall/winter move back to a larger pack. That is basically what has been going on with me and my gear choices as of late. Function rather than fashion, although from the sounds of it, it seems like I am checking both boxes. 😂🤷‍♂️ Definitely recommend the strainer stove. Keeping the legs on it is probably a good idea, although I do like it stripped down with a couple pieces of wet wood underneath to lift it up. Packs down significantly smaller. Have a good one! 🤝

Lol They are really nice kit. This was the Original, lightest weight, non insulated, but very useful and packable. It makes a near full body poncho, a heat reflecting pod you can get inside, a tarp, and a bunch of other stuff. The other part was the tent ends, which expand the tarp into a full size pup tent. The inside heats up with body heat, it was probably 15 deg warmer inside tent. Very well made. It will be interesting to see it in winter months.

Hi Jess, another great video! Like the Jerven with the tent ends, very nice. Also like that Alpha 1 canteen, like the old school WW2 style. I've been eyeballin' the Savotta sleeping pad for quite some time now, I really like the design, but reading the specs it seems to be quite thin for comfort. Was wondering how you like it? is it just bearable?
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom Ай бұрын
Thanks! I really like it, as it is a 2 in 1 solution. It is comfortable for me, but the ground is relatively soft here. During the winter months, I like to run this with an inflatable mat as well. Not absolutely necessary, but nice. The inflatable mat I have is an insulated Klymit pad, which is really good.

On another note, I am really glad that my finances wouldn't allow me to just jump back into the outdoors, aka backpacking, aka camping, aka survival, aka bushcraft space and just willy-nilly purchase everything that I thought that I needed or desired. This Norwegian Jerven Fjellduken with its pair of tent ends is a perfect example of what I am talking about. I had kinda eliminated the Jerven Fjellduken in favor of the Varusteleka Sarma TST Thermal Cloak, but the zip-on tent ends are compelling me to reconsider. *"Does anyone here know if any manufacturer markets a high-quality mesh tent that will easily fit beneath the Jerven Fjellduken when it is erected with its accompanying tent ends?"* Thanks

@EnduranceRoom 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, Bruce. It really is interesting kit. High degree of multi-functionality. I will follow up with a more in depth video shortly. It was probably 15 degrees warmer inside shelter. I am looking forward to testing it in winter. I have a USGI bug net and an enclosed A frame bug net from POMOLY that I can test it with. I think both options would work. I am sure there are others.
