A look at the Jerven Fjelduken Original and the Jerven Tent Ends from www.BetterBushcraft.com
The Jerven Original is one of the most versatile pieces of gear for the outdoors. It is a tarp, poncho, bivvy, survival shelter, and with the Tent Ends, a fully enclosed thermal pup tent. It is incredibly well made, built to Norwegian military specifications for rugged mountain use. The name, Jerven Fjelduken, translates to Wolverine Mountain Tarp.
Absolutely phenomenal gear.
Check one out for yourself at Better Bushcraft.

Great presentation Jess. That, with the wings, would be an incredible shelter in the cold months with a fire in front of it. The wing look similar to the old WW2 German zeltbaun. The triangular one. Wish someone would make one of those out of modern materials. Then again the classics do rock for a reason. Nate

Thank you, Jimmy. That’s great to hear you got some plash palatkas. I will make more content with them. As for the forest people, I have had good and bad experiences (extreme on both ends of the spectrum). Mostly positive these days, and out of respect, I don’t go into it on here. Most important thing I could offer though, is we are an open book. They see and feel everything. Have good intentions and show respect, things can become very interesting. I would recommend checking out Sunbow True Brother. He has a website, some books, and done a few podcasts. Well worth checking out. Cheers, Jess

Thank you, Brother. It really is phenomenal kit. I am kind of kicking myself for glazing over the survival shelter aspect of this. It seems to me that it is the primary function of the design. Regulating body temperature to stave off hypothermia. Really powerful in that regard. I fell through ice in my teens hunting and was partially submerged for about 30min mid winter. My dad was able to start a fire with matches and some paper towels for tinder. It would have been sooo easy to drift off to sleep. Having something like this in a situation like that would be incredibly beneficial. Thank you so much for sending it. Greatly appreciated. 🤝

I am looking for a tarp, and the Jerven Original is high on my list due to its versatility (I have the Hunter model). However, I wish it were the same size as the Hunter so I could use it as a full-body bivy. Anyway, your great review made me see it from a new perspective. Thanks! Perhaps it would be interesting to see how it performs compared to the Varusteleka Särmä TST Thermal Cloak (216 x 216 cm open, 216 x 108 cm as a bivy and 650g). Can you please make a comparison between the Jerven Original and the Varusteleka Särmä TST Thermal Cloak? It seems the Norwegian army no longer uses the Jerven; they have replaced it with the Dovrefjell Custom Light fjellduk. The Dovrefjell Custom Light fjellduk has the same size as the Hunter and can also be used as a bivy. It comes with a removable hood that can be attached in two places, although arm sleeves are optional. The drawback is its 950g weight, and some people have reported that it is noisier than the Jerven and that the hood is not good.
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info on the Dovrefell. I knew they were using something else with a hood. I would say that if you already have the Hunter, that the Original would probably be the more useful option for you. The rectangular 143x246cm footprint makes a nice tarp. You could use the hunter underneath it as a bivvy/pod suspended from the same ridgline as the Original. It would be a very nice setup.
@robertbrannan9375
@robertbrannan9375 15 күн бұрын
So considering the size and shape, do you like the jerven original better than the sarma tst thermal cloak unlined? The sarma is more square when using it as a tarp.
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom 15 күн бұрын
Good question. Short answer- all of them are very good. Long answer- If I did not have a Jerven Hunter or SÄRMÄ TST cloak, I would probably go with one of those, as the bivvy/pod configuration is really amazing. I suspend them under a tarp for sleeping. That being said, I find the dimensions of the Original very good for tarp configurations and it can be combined with either of the other two as a tarp or or rain wear.

I am curious to see you try something with the Jerven Original. I'm a Canadian who cannot handle the heat so I've been looking at the Jerven Original for its intended use (as shown here) but also as a shelter designed to reflect heat away by turning the tarp the other way around, of course this would make hiding all but impossible but for camping and backpacking it might have uses. Would you be interested in trying the idea out?

@@puddleduck4924 They do zip together, but it looks like the zippers are opposed, designed to attach to jerven. Rotate one up, one down, they zip into a parallelogram. Or turn one shiny side out, it should zip into a lavuu, but it is going to have a hole in the peak and be very tiny, as mentioned above. I never recommended this to you and told you it was too small... You have a couple options. 1. Email Better Bushcraft and tell them your dilemma. 2. Add a loop at the peak of each side and you use the tent ends with another tarp to make a cabin tent. The tarp would need to roughly match up to the tent ends. 3. Buy a Jerven and use it as it was meant to be used.

@@puddleduck4924 Have you contacted Better Bushcraft and told them? Just to be clear, I did not recommend this to you. You bought them with this in mind without confirming it was possible, then you messaged me asking if they would zip together to make a lavuu. I said they zip together, but it was too small to use as a lavuu. They do zip together, just not as you had hoped. The zippers are opposed, one down, one up. If you turn one shiny side out, it should make a lavuu shape, but again, it is too small to use like that, not to mention, there would be no place to put a center pole and there are no tie offs at the peak to suspend. It is meant to make the Original a tent. The tent is nice. Personally, I would save up and buy the Original.

@EnduranceRoom 8 күн бұрын
@@gwpattrick Good day. So individually, you can wear them as a poncho. One can be setup as a half tent. Two zipped together to make a full lavuu. To suspend the shelter, you can use a ridge line or a pole inside. I like using a ridge line, as this makes more space inside without the pole in the way. Getting the height set takes some playing around. An adjustable trekking would be helpful for this, so you can get the feel for the appropriate height. It can be setup flush to the ground, with the snow skirts flat, or elevated up so the snow skirts hang down, which will make the shelter about 3-4” taller and offer more room on the inside. To do this, make some small 12”loops of cord and run through the grommet holes. This will let you use larger stakes and have some flexibility with setup. Shock cord would also work for this well. I will try and film something this week. Any questions, just ask. I will try and help.
