GE Dash 8 Survivors

GE's Dash 8 series locomotives were produced from the Mid-80's to early 90's and the majority have been retired or sold off over the past decades, they are seemingly beginning to become a dying breed. Here's some power you gotta look out for when you're out shooting trains. Included are CN/BCOL's C40-8, and C40-8M units that have already began to be retired (Not including IC C40-8Ws), a UP C40-8 which all have been retired, BNSF B40-8 on the verge of retirement, BNSF B40-8W about to be rebuilt, NS C40-8W already retired, Amtrak's P32-8BWH which are now mainly switchers.

Also speaking of C40-8W's, I actually have a list on the CSX Dash-8's that are stored in Cumberland, Maryland: 7650, 7654, 7656, 7667, 7670 (The moon Emblem), 7677, 7679, 7683, 7692, 7694, 7696, 7699, 7709, 7722-23, 7725, 7730, 7759, 7765 (The Chessie Emblem), 7777 (Lucky 7's)-78, 7781, 7791-95, 7816, 7821, 7823-24, 7836, 7848-49, 7864 (Retired on April 2018), 7877, 7880, 7883, 7891, 7896, 7905, 7916-17, and 7929.

Dash 8 ... first generation microprocessor control ... the beginning of the end for EMD market share. I like the camera angles @ 2:00 nice work.

There was a B40-8W sitting in the Emporia Kansas BNSF yard (BNSF 540 the one with a K5HL)

Lack of reliability?!? ANY of those old Dash 8's could outlast a GEVO, and they HAVE!!!!

Weren't the Dash 8-40B(W)s always meant to be used for local freight trains and such? That could be why the BNSF is planning to rebuild them. Plus, on my HO-scale model train layout I generally run local freights, and sometimes I have them pulled by a pair of BNSF Dash 840-BWs (Walthers Trainline models with TCS DCC decoders hardwired into them) as I do like the look of GE's wide-cab Dash-series diesels; they sure look cool pulling my older TYCO, A.H.M. and Life-Like freight cars!

No. They were built for fast, light intermodal service. Quick acceleration on fast trains. They aren’t very well suited for locals at all, but that’s where they wound up.
