More fun with EEPs! In this dryer melodrama, Samurai Appliance Repair Man shows you how to useElectrically Equivalent Points to troubleshoot a dryer that wasn't starting. Using the power of EEPs, you can keep you from tearing apart a PITA dryer installation to check a 30 amp fuse. Save your back, save liability, save yo azz!
UPDATE: Posted the exciting conclusion to this cliff-hangar video answering the question, "Why did the fuse fail?" here: • GE Dryer No Start Blow...
These are exactly the kind of troubleshooting skills we teach techs everyday at the Master Samurai Tech Academy mastersamuraite...

on my GE gtdp180edww the fuse was directly left of where the power cord connects to the dryer. could not find this model number on any of the appliance parts / repair sites. typical model numbers show up as gtdp180ed0ww to gtdp180ed6ww. thanks to this video I made the repair myself. Thanks to SamuraiRepairman!!!

A tip after using this video to fix my dryer. You don't need to pull the top, front, and drum. You can access this resistor by taking off the top back panel, a half dozen screws. When you test it use a high setting, I used 4 K on the ohm meter. At R1 on up to you get into the thousands of ohms the resister won't pass a current. It appears to be a very close thing, just a couple thousand ohms difference between the old one that was defective and the new one. After testing the new part I wasn't sure it was going to fix it but that 1000 or 500 ohms made all the difference in the world. There is another part that I replaced, top left side, you can access by removing the top and the console. It has four terminals with the one on top being the one that is critical. That top one has to be tested at high ohms too, I used 4K range. It won't show continuity on R1 or higher till you get up into the thousands of ohms. Dryer fixed. $34.00 part from Amazon.

I wasnt getting the voltage at my TB test point so I went to the next point. My schematic shows a device inline labeled Hi-limit which is where my voltage dropped. I jumpered around this device and the voltage then went to my timer. When I did more research this is a Hi Limit Thermostat.

I had the black wire on the timer arc with the metal frame shorting out. Ive replaced the timer and now waiting for a new ceramic fuse, If that still doesn't work, then it was the thermal fuse (brown wire).

Question, if you don’t hear humming (when trying to start) does that automatically mean that it’s something else & your motor is fine??
@AppliantologyOrg
@AppliantologyOrg Жыл бұрын
The motor makes the humming noise when it’s running. No noise means the motor is not running when it should be. This could be a problem with the power supply to the motor and not the motor itself.

Why did the fuse blow?
@AppliantologyOrg
@AppliantologyOrg 8 жыл бұрын
+John July Fuses often blow for no discernible reason. The real question is: why was there a fuse in L1 in the first place? The dryer is already on a 2-pole breaker-- what's the point of the fuse? I discuss that in this followup video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ht6pmJZ8rtXIkYE.html

@@AppliantologyOrg how do you replace the fuse in where is it
@lewisriesbeck8858
@lewisriesbeck8858 5 жыл бұрын
Always question why any fuse is open. Was it doing that which it was designed to do, or did it just happen to fail? And I too question the point of having an embedded 30 amp cartridge fuse, (special size btw) that cost's about $20.00 from the manufacturer, when the dryer is protected at the breaker or fuse panel in the home already. Large fuses like this, in a dryer, typically open because of heating elements going to ground or chaffed wiring issues causing high current when they touch ground. Poor connections at t-stats, and limits, can cause high current as well. Most of the time I see heating elements shorted to ground, very close to power lead connection point, as the element will simply heat uncontrolled on a 120vac if the element shorts to ground further into the length of the coil. The Mica element doesn't usually do any sort of shorting to ground, as it is a ribbon style element. So bottom line is check the heating element for being grounded to frame as well as replacing the fuse. Hope this helps, Great vids SamuraiRepairman. Love your stuff and refer to them all the time on equipment I am not familiar with, which is more and more as time goes on. Cheers.
