Wow! This was so wonderfully detailed. Here’s what happened because of your video: Yesterday I replaced our worn out freezer fan motor myself with the help of a local appliance repair guy who gave me pointers over the phone in several phone calls and recommended where to buy the new motor. I’m not a mechanic and I was in unchartered territory but our local repair guy and this video really gave me the confidence that I could do the job. When I plugged in the frij and the light came on and I heard the fan whirring I kept jumping for joy and hugging my hubby like my horse had just crossed the finish line! So, I highly recommend watching and following this video because if I can do it, so can you.

I can tell by your smirk at the very end you'd had about enough of that ridiculous swap. After prior iterations of much simpler GE evap fan swaps, this style justifies an engineer over at GE be taken out back & beat with a rubber hose......SEVERELY!!!

Great video. New fan is running now!! Old fan was as dead as a door nail. *Update. Fridge is 35° on laser temp and freezer is 5°! Yes! Also the ice machine came on after a month of being off. Thank you.

When the fan died did it cause the top half of the freezer to defrost? My fridge is running in the 55-60 range and my freezer is 30s.. the lower parts of on both sides are 20-25 degrees cooler.. I was wondering if the fan being out would be the primary cause of this..

I would have never attempted this repair on my own without this video. However, while my fridge looked the same, several additional steps were required for my case. Light cover had a securing screw. Fan cover was a much bigger single assembly going from the top of the evaporator cover all the way to behind the ice maker assembly. Plus, the lower fan cover screws were behind the evaporator cover so the evaporator cover had to come off first. Also not only did the ice maker drive motor assembly have to come out but the ice maker itself had to come out to reach the top screws of the fan cover. Total pain. But I did get everything back together with the new an motor. Everything works! My original fan motor was on its last legs, barely starting up and because of bearing play the fan blades were sometimes rubbing on the fan shroud making quite a racket. And I did not drop one screw for a change!

Very good instructions. My GE fridge isn't exactly the same as the one in this video, but it is close enough that these instructions were very helpful for replacing the evaporator motor.

Saved me hundreds! My refrigerator uses the exact part number and looks identical from the outside, but the internal assembly parts and disassembly steps are noticeablt different at each step. Must be a varient of the one shown here. That said, this video was a HUGE help and gives everything you'll need to figure out the specifics for similar units. I was able to fix my GE PSHS6RGXCDSS with a $20 replacement from Amazon! Really cleaned out the nooks and crannys along the way, too. Thanks!

On my pse25kshehss model, I also had to remove the ice maker and the two top shelf brackets to get the fan cover off and out. It had two screws behind the ice maker. But, the fridge is cold this morning and there is ice. Thanks for this video. One note, after I had everything put back in, the fan was making that clicking noise when it's hitting the cover. I loosened some screws to adjust the cover and the ice maker. The ice maker sits on a ledge that's part of the cover. I lifted the ice maker as high as it would go and tightened the screw that holds it to take the pressure off of the cover. That took care of it.

Thank you ParSelect. My GE frig had a different configuration of mounts and connectors. However this video got me through it. I had to splice the new fan wires to the connector of the defective motor because the old connector contained 2 more wires that were not from the fan motor. All working great!

I did the same thing, except the extra wires went to the temp sensor attached to the top of the coils. Used orange twist cone things and filled with silicon calking.

Thanks so much for this video. It really helped me replace the evaporator fan which had died and killed the main board. The top green resistor on the main board was fried- which pointed to the evaporator fan. Great video! ❤️

Successfully installed the fan and it works again! The sequence was different, but your video did help me figure it out. I would have recommended that the rubber gourmets and fan blade be replaced at the same time too.

Thank you for the excellent instructions. I had a problem where the fan blade was lightly hitting the slanted shroud over it and I was able to fix it without problem in less than an hour. I will add that it really helps to have a nut driver with a magnetic in the tip to hold the screws as you can only get one arm in there at a time.

I too have this problem of the fan blace hitting the slantd shroud. I can pull on the vents and pull it out and the fan noise quits. So I suspect I just need to add a bushing somewhere when installing the slanted shroud. Any help.

Our Evaporator Fan was making terrible noises with the temperature fluctuating in the fridge section. I removed the unit and found the grommet on the shaft side had partly disintegrated with bits falling into the fan shaft dome that rubbed on the shaft collar inside. I used a safety pin, a wire brush for car detailing and an X-acto knife to remove dozens of bits from inside the dome. That took 20 minutes. The rear grommet was OK, so I swapped front to rear grommets & reassembled everything. The fridge is now back to running without much perceptible noise of any kind and the temperature is stable again.

just took mine out. ordering one. just checking if there was something to make it easier. mine was a pain to remove. i didnt even get the evap fan housing all the way out but i got the motor out.

Thank you it was a great help in getting to the evaporator motor and clearing the ice that had built up. I thought while doing that I would replace the fan motor. Unfortunately for me, the refrigerator was bought in 2004 and GE no longer supported the existing evaporator motor wiring. The replacement motor recommended by GE would probably requiring some cutting wires, probably the temp sensor wires and reconnecting. No explanation from GE how to incorporate the new wiring. I decided to not replace the motor because it was working fine.

I'm having that problem now. I bought the identical part, but the wiring looks different and I haven't the slightest idea how to replace it correctly.

Because the connection was a not a quick connection type I cut and respliced this also made it easier to retrieve and connect the motor. I replaced the chipped fan blade and motor (the motor seem to be working but I had a new one so I replaced). Everything seems to be working. Hope to be able to get a few more years out of the 13 year old ge. Folks on KZfaq have been a great help sorting the problem out...

@@tonym4388 Bought my GE fridge in 2004, too. My evaporator fan motor needs replacing. Do you mean your refrigerator's original evaporator fan motor was NOT quick connection type? I could probably handle a quick connection replacement but not cutting & splicing wires 😬 The defrost drain on this fridge used to freeze with ice often in the past. By some miracle, it hasn't done so in 4 years! Just trying to decide whether to replace the evaporator fan or buy a new fridge 😐

and I've never worked on an appliance in my life before, the video is just that good! here's a tip to future home handymen: take pictures because it's a lot harder to reassemble everything, keep track of all fasteners and where they go, and if you find yourself forcing a part step back and reevaluate because you don't want to break yet another thing. ok cheers y'all

Excellent set of instructions. It's just as bad as I thought to get to the fan. You have to take everything in the freezer apart to get to the fan motor; meanwhile, you need a place for all the food that was in there. My fan works, it just makes noise. I'm going to leave it alone.

On my model, there's a lot of wiggle room for how far the blades can stick out. They can slide along the motor shaft about 1 1/2". Is there any sort of "ideal" spacing?

If the bushings are silicone rubber they will last for many years. Be sure if you don't replace the fan: lubricate the motor shaft bearings, & clean the fan blades.

There's a few things you need to know before watching this deceptively simple video. 1) It's demonstrated on the simplest possible GE model. If your freezer matches this one, fantastic. If it doesn't you'll have 85 different cord bundles and various attachments that don't match what you see here, and housings/covers will look and attach differently. You may have to remove the icemaker. 2) It's carefully staged to make it look like you can do all of this one handed. You cannot. You will have to cram both arms into the narrow freezer compartment and it will be torture. 3) While cramming both arms into the freezer, WHEN you drop a screw, it will clatter down and vanish into a mysterious void rather than just appearing at the bottom of the freezer or on the floor. That screw is gone now. Overall, this project was a tremendous pain in the ass that I would only recommend if you truly can't afford to call out a technician to do it. It's completely asinine that GE evap fan motors fail after 2 or 3 years and even more asinine that basically the entire freezer needs to be disassembled to replace that part.

Replaced the fan, once reconnected the power - the board stopped responding. Darn, did I burn the board somehow? It's brand new and it was starting the compressor prior to the fan replacement just fine.

How do I know it's not just the fan motor grommet ? And does the new fan motor come with a new grommet or should I order a new one with the fan motor ?

For anyone else wondering, no, the replacement motor does not come with a new grommet, you have to buy the replacement grommet separately (ridiculous).

911-My freezer in side by side has lots of ice. I know why but, The fan started making noise. We hit the panel 3 times and sounded like ice fell. quite a bit. Probably onto the fan and the noise got much louder. Unplugged machine to let defrosting start. Hope my food will be ok. Is it okay to run the machine with a noisy fan? Or will it cause a problem especially since there is ice build up?

Well... I got about 4 minutes Into this video and realized I'd better buy a new fridge. There's absolutely no way I can do this and I bet this would be a very expensive repair as GE wants $180 just to show up. This is a 4 year old fridge this should not have failed yet.

My issue is the fan starts touching the surround and makes a clicking kind of noise, usually have putting something back on freezer shelf. To make it stop the fan clicking noise, I have to put finger tips in cover of vent openings and pull until click stops. Been doing this for several years. Is it a motor or fan or a rubber grommet problem?

Mine does same thing i noticed when i pull on vent with my fingers sometimes ice chips fall out bottom I think it freezes up. It sounds like fan blades are grinding into the plastic cover but again i believe its iceing up. Bad things to come?

I had the same issue, and I narrowed it down to the fan. It was faint but could be hear all the way to the bedroom. Watched this video and replaced the fan motor, problem solved.

一點也不簡單...還要記得復原的順序，有時不一定是風扇馬達問題，也有可能是冰箱背後的電路板先確定是不是電路板故障，再更換風扇馬達

No I already replace the defroster fan in the freezer I want to see where the fan is in the fridgerator to circulate the air from the in the frigerator where is it located at GE profile side-by-side 2 door please show me so I can replace that motor

I would your need your model number to be 100% sure I am giving you accurate info but 99% of those side by sides only have the one air circulation fan motor. That one fan is moving cold air from the freezer compartment into the fridge compartment which then get drawn back into the freezer section to be re-cooled. If your temperature in the fridge section is too warm and the freezer temp is ok, then look at the air dampener between the two section as well as the return air vent to ensure nothing is restricting the air flow.

will a non-functioning evaporator fan cause both the freezer and the fridge to be only cold at the bottom and warmer at the top, as well as freeze the food in the bottom of the fridge, and cause the freezer and fridge temperatures fluctuates throughout the day?

My GE Cafe was doing exactly that, and i replaced the Evaporator Motor and Fan Blade, all is working fine now, so far.

@@trini-mikeali3829 yeah, I was debating on getting both. It sucks there is no information on the board and GE won't tell me anything other than they can send a technician out to look at it.

@@robertbecton7025 I looked at a lot of video on diagnosing the board and most showed there were burnt board or leaking capacitors. i would get the motor first. I am pretty sure the board is good. good luck.

This is an extremely poor design by GE... It could have been designed where the actual fan motor pulled out through the top without taking it all apart. This is way harder than you're making it look and anybody that's saying it was easy it's full of it! This isn't for the happy homeowner faint at heart fix. Terrible terrible terrible design... I would never buy a GE appliance the rest of my life... I have a $12,000 GE refrigerator that's nothing but a POS! I could go on and on!
