How would each party improve social mobility, help Singaporeans who feel they have been left behind and ultimately emerge from the COVID-19 crisis stronger and more cohesive as a society? Singapore Democratic Party's Chee Soon Juan, Progress Singapore Party's Francis Yuen, Workers' Party's Jamus Lim and People's Action Party's Vivian Balakrishnan respond.

IMO, Dr Chee is one of the sincere and strongest candidates by far. I dont think I can come this far like him after so many years of bullied by the ruling party. During the 90s, We only have the national TV and papers for news, and Dr Chee and all the other opposition candidates were mug sling and kicked like street dogs. Dr Chee was branded as a traitor, a liar all becos he was very vocal. He speaks up but kena verbally hoot and sued jialat jialat. All he wanted is to serve the nation and the people, nothing more. Remember, he is also someone's son, husband and a father. With his personal qualification and capability, he can juz simply walk away if not for the people. So voters, plz give him a chance to prove his worth. I'm sure you would find it rewarding. Ty

"give him a chance to prove his worth" LOL! I don't get it why do people think election is a play thing, elect someone who can't contribute any useful ideas but nitpicking on the polices into the parliament would delay in political strategy and eventually political instability.

I personally have nothing against Dr Chee. However, I'm against the very policy of 4Y1N his party have come up with. It will eventually cause taxes to rise with the implementation of retrenchment benefits and allowance for the elderly.

I understand why he kena sued jailat jailat, look at how he speaks, like a spoilt child telling lies??? How to stop that??? must put him in Jail.... His policies are atrocious, were u even listening to his debates? He wants to use the 100b Covid Money from the reserve to pay for elderly income for 20years... just a reserve gold digger. Sure maybe the reserve can support that, and take away another GST hole for a few years, just let the reserve keep paying until it dries up?? Then what??? He has no concrete plans which is why he looked like a joke at the debate, and you wonder why he didn't win over these years or even gets sued, I believe a strong enough candidate can win regardless of how Unfair u think PAP will try to be, Chee is just not strong especially after the debate. Having just returned to Singapore after 2 decades, I can understand why people were sueing..

PAP Ministers making 150,000 dollars a month and elderly old people suffer selling boxes, sleeping in boxes, selling ice cream and to mention some singaporeans eating probably only twice a day.???? Come on it is so clear that the ruling party is horrible and so unfair for much too long...150k salary???? There is a big difference between the poor and the rich and all this rich should be out.The problem is Singapore has been with same old boring PAP for far too long. PAP leaders have ruled so many years and they have become so rich and comfortable that they have neglected their people so much....so many poor are suffering with no proper home, food and underpaid jobs...now even jobless. What about the young childrens future? No point in having big airports, high tech buildings and fancy city life when the people are so stressed and deprived of their simple privileges and freedom. People in Singapore need to make the change now for a better future and vote wisely. Dont make the same mistake again. As for the future there must be a system whereby ministers should only be paid to 20 to 30k the most....give the excess money to the singapore people who need it the most. This is the truth.

I have watch a Taiwanese show that invited 2 Professor in SG to speak about Singapore Story. One of the point mentioned is the argument of the high income. And one of the professors have ask LKY on this issue before. The rationale is not just to weed out corruption whether it is working or not is another issue. Every person judgement of whether a country is clean enough varies. But the rationale is to bring in those who have the capabilities to run Singapore in. To attract those who otherwise could consider those high paying management jobs in the other sectors to come in. To have the best to lead the countries instead of them leading in the companies. Which I find it reasonable and I agree to it. Because the issue with wealth is not a simple sum math question. Where we all have 1 mill to share among all the people but is that having people who are skilled in doing their profession which brings more money in that money can help to bring subsidy to the needy. Opposition becoming government will not naturally solve this issue. Having those fancy city life and big airports is also about generating the revenue. We cannot compare ourselves with other nations directly because every nation have difference. I don’t quite buy in PSP proposal because I can’t see the maths behind. I do quite like Mr Chee’s point which I never considered before and was an oversight and is definitely one thing to look into. Which I do not find Mr Vivian’s answer to put off this point but other provide an alternative.

@@ruthlim8184 Singapore is a country, not a company. The primary goal of company management is to maximize profits -- the primary goal of a country's government is to look after its citizens. Maybe in our early years, high salaries were the only way to encourage talent to join politics. But this is clearly not the case anymore. Many opposition parties are running on the platform of reducing ministerial pay across the board, with members who are clearly talented and knowledgeable from both the private and public sectors. We cannot keep running Singapore like a company. This is why the class divide continues to widen in Singapore, because our government focuses more on amassing capital than improving social welfare.

Every school is a good school is not true. Anyone with school going children can tell you that is not true. Some schools give free third language lessons after school. Or speech and drama classes. Most other schools don't do that. It is not fair. Definitely untrue that every school is a good school. Yes , give more funding to neighbourhood schools.

If seniors want to work...I have personally interviewed every senior taxi/GRAB driver to ask them if they really want to drive and 99% of them would say, "I have no choice or else how to survive?" After living in Melbourne for just a year and experiencing the social welfare they have in place for seniors like free Tai Chi/QiGong and even Yoga & Meditation classes for people of all ages, it breaks my heart to return and see our pioneers working in low-level menial jobs that do nothing for their wellness or pride. Haven't they done enough already for the country after40-50 years of their lives to be subjected to be cleaners, taxi drivers, etc? They should be enjoying the golden years of their lives for their contributions to the prosperity of our country today. It's terrible that they feel resigned to what seems like a hopeless situation and just because they are ageing later now so we delay their retirement years to enjoy life as they should? I do see the good work that the PAP has done but more can be done for the welfare of Singaporeans when privileges seem to be given to foreigners so easily. And let's not even go there with regards to how much our ministers earn and imagining how much of these can be passed on to our seniors. The growing expanse of the middle class is one that seems to have an unreachable ceiling to get to the next strata. Just have a look at the executives that ply the MRT trains every morning and evening at how tired, stressed and unhappy they look as they jostle day in day out. I have seen the difference where people in Melbourne would take the time to give way and are civic-minded enough to care for other passengers or the people around them in general. I wish we could be the same and it's clear to me that it boils down to a lack of true concern for the welfare of our citizens - the biggest sector of the population i.e. the middle struggling class. Where engineer graduates have to take on extra Grab gig just to be able to support his wife and two sons. What quality of life is there to just work till we are old and beyond.

Singapore is not PAP and PAP is not Singapore and let's make this very clear. From past experiences, when you're unfortunately retrenched (more accurately your role is being replaced) , can PAP told the company to return you to the job or immediately find you another comparable job? Therefore, the life, jobs and future of Singaporean belong only to Singaporean and not PAP. Again this must be clear. Only Singaporean can make Singapore great again especially the life, jobs and future of Singaporean. Pioneer Singaporean have make Singapore great and current generation will strive to continue to do so.

Yes. That is a good distinction to make. Don't buy into if you don't vote for PAP means you are not united but causing disunity. It feels like they are leaning towards communism kind of unity especially during all the ministerial speech always emphasising on unity.

This whole GRC voting system is flawed. Regardless which party they belong to, anyone who wants a seat in the parliament need to come up with a manifesto. Stand up and let these individuals voices be heard. And the people choose which of them deserve their vote. That would be fair as no party could block anyone from claiming a seat. Same goes when choosing a minister. Citizen would vote for any new law to be approve. This representative democracy in Singapore is bogus. We need to take democracy back to it's pure form. The talk of the Swiss standard has been ringing in our ears for decades. Maybe we should look at how the Swiss their governance. And perhaps, one day we can finally achieve it. As a social worker, whatever is said by Dr Vivian, I dont see it on the ground. Whatever he says is not reflective on the ground at all. And this is 4 years (post GE2020) and the same problems exists. There is a mismatch between what is promised in terms of policy outcomes versus what happens in reality. The crux of the issue is that the PAP government does'nt solve problems, nor do they divert resources to coming up with solutions to tackle the root cause of the issue. All they are good at is treating the symptoms of their ill informed policies, policies that simply do not work in this day and age. The sentiments that I have had on the ground, through the thousands of hours spent doing home visits, hospital visits etc, is that the majority of the lower income and disadvantaged in society, usually not very well educated, express the same sentiments and greviances that all opposition members talk about. If Singaporeans are sick and tired of the status quo and the mediocrity of life here in Singapore, may I suggest voting for the opposition (WP/SDP/PSP). I say this because the opposition has a grip on reality. They don't do the ground work just for fun, but rather, are interested in coming up with solutions and alternative policies that work for the people. Singapore needs major reform, and reform starts with voting for the people/party to enact a cultural shift in the way we do things, not voting for a government that is only interested in bossting the economy while hurting its citizens. Singapore needs major reform, before citizenship loses its meaning.

I agree but most of the votes to PAP are citizens whom are naturalised since year 1999, past 20-30 years they migrated to SG and reaped the benefits, feeling very good they vote PAP and this helped them cross the line. The older 3 generation families who had lived in Singapore for very long tend to vote opposition at a high rate. The complaining voices will be drowned, we need another round where foreigners' children serve NS and start to vote opposition. Sg population is not increasing much anymore so next round after 2030 can be the defining factor. Currently its about 40% of 3 generation Singaporeans voting PAP, plus 100% of the naturalised citizen voting PAP = 60-64% overall mandate. In the 3 gen old SG, only civil servants will vote for PAP strongly as civil service and stat boards employed about 30% of Singaporeans. This divide means PAP will focus on importing naturalised citizens to secure their mandate, like u said the problems they cant solve, so replace all of us.

Please vote any opposition party except SDP. The 4Y1N policy is not the right path to take. The amount of taxes we would have to pay for the retrenchment benefits and monthly allowance for the elderly will be ridiculous considering that we are facing both an aging population and a declining birth rate. Furthermore, isn't CPF already giving the elderly hundreds of dollars a month? What is the difference between them?

Many singaporean say, PAP bring in lot of FT to steal our jobs. Yes, they took our jobs and they offers higher pay than us, but some say because save money hired cheaper FT. Been working at 5 small design agency company, all of them has hired FT (with work pass), and PR. All FT colleagues I work with really has Skill and their design skill and knowledge really better than me, that i really envy them! and their salary also 2 to 3 times higher than me. Which I really need to improve myself and learn more to able to fight for more pay! About 2 years ago, I was ask to auto resign, as my skill was the so-so only compare to my 2 colleagues who is both a work pass holder and due to bad economic. The worst is I make my company lost 2 important clients! After that i decided to work as freelance, while I upgrade my skills and see if any course can attend as well as while looking for full-time job. anyway, I'm still "jobless for full-time job", due to too picky on working location (dislike ulu place like Tai Seng, Kallang, macpherson etc...) For the pass 2 years i realise there was job available but due to lack of too many skills, i was unable to apply job plus too picky. That was why, I will still support PAP although some of their politics I do not agree! Because I know where is my problem for being jobless for yrs, it was my fault. As for opposition party, I only like WORKER PARTY... as they are the only standard and capable among the rest of the opposition party! They always choose the right person to join them. For me, ... Only PAP and worker party can rule SG. Only both can WINS! The rest of party... I'm speechless... they only busy create FAKE NEWS.. to bring down PAP! The other opposition party should learn more from WORKER PARTY. I support PAP! I may not be supporting Worker Party but I'm satisfied with their performance!

There we have it, everybody should be feeling very comforted now that Vivien had assured us once again that pap will leave no one behind, they will do like they always had done, focused on uplifting EVERYONE, and they want to create JOBs. Actually, I must say for a moment, I did felt comforted. He sounds so sincere and loves his mellow voice too. But wait a minute, wasn't that what pap had told us the last election, and the one before that, and the one before that too, come to think of it. How come they had to keep saying it if they are already done. So obviously it is not done. maybe they had tried and it cannot be done. But wait, cannot be done after the last 20 years? come on! Maybe they are saying it because this is election time ya, but never really intended to do it. Nahhhh, they all sound so sincere, surely they want to do it right. So maybe they want but don't know how to, but that is unlikely since they are all scholars and being paid millions. Aiyah, I have only primary education, not very smart.....your guys come to your own conclusion lah. But one thing I am quite certain though, by this time next year and pap is till running this country without oppositions, those poor old folks will still be salvaging for paper cartons and wiping tables but may feel happier after being uplifted by Vivien and his team. Those retrenched and unemployed will still be looking for a job but they will feel better knowing that the gov is working very hard to create jobs. Those PMETs will be ever so grateful to drive Grab and deliver food to those working in the Madras of Singapore, the very people whom the gov had invited to take over their jobs. As for me, I am happy to know that my CPF is growing in value under the good hands of the gov who has been extra careful not to let anyone touch it. I am so glad I am so much better off than people in our neighboring countries. I am so relieved to know that my gov promised not to leave me behind, less I fall through the cracks. It's so incredible, they are now promising not to let me walk alone. Wait, I wonder who are they sending to walk with me......next week I want to go to the wet market...... wonder if that person will hold my hands, I feel more secured that way. So Guys, vote hor....vote so that you have job and feel uplifted ok don't worry, you don't need to walk alone, they promised. They are so sincere cant you feel it......can believe them lah. So happy now, someone will come to walk with me to the wet market. I so love our gov, always have good promises!

Maintaining well-functioning system is essential to avoid any problems or unstability that might occurred in the near future. But I do believe that in democracy, everyone's voice should be heard. Give the opposition parties to present themselves in the Parliament and later you will know to what extent their promises, manifestos or even their promises made during GE will be fulfilled. If they perform well, you might as well give them more chances during next GE and it can serve as effective check and balance in managing the country. As some said, absolute power corrupts. If they failed to adhere to their promises and plans, you replace them with more committed and hardworking, ready to serve candidate. Best of luck to all Singaporeans for your General Election! -Just my 2 cents from as an outsider, Peace!

"Majority of people are actually 3rd world citizen from the viewpoint of poverty" - PSP Our forefathers actually lived in the 3rd world in real poverty, not us. In terms of assets and money, they were really in the 3rd world. But their 3rd world mentality was work hard (as long as there were jobs for them with any salary as long as they could put bread on the table for the family), spend only what they had and save up for the future rainy days & accumulate wealth by constant effort for the next generation. Today, we, most of us, are in the 1st world in terms of assets and money. But our first world mentality is work less (with minimum salary of $1300 to be regarded as "dignified vocation") & retire early, spend more that you have and live for here and now. We have more but we are less happy. I think the problem is not poverty in SG. Neither is it lack of jobs or minimum wage. We are constantly discontent and growing in greed. Moreover, we feel entitled to live a good life without our forefathers' 3rd world mentality. A deadly combination in SG today would be having a 3rd world assets with this type of first world mentality. They will never get out of poverty.

You want more jobs opening from those global enterprises to local ? The correct direction of a good party is to allocate more funding to educations and skill-up schema! PAP's direction is so correct! Those opposition parties only argue for more subsidy which is very poor vision.

The with holding of cpf money is a good way to keep people work longer. And of course jobs jobs jobs.... or rather career for foreigners. No minimum wage? Health care system? Housing? And a whole lot of issues that revolve around high $$ that we do know who allows it to be kept at that high cost level. Then a great word choice Subsidy that “absorbs” those cost which are paid using one of the cpf components and tax payers money. All these money ultimately paid to a private company or public entities who collects billions of dollars directly from cpf. These really needs some disinfectant and cleaning.

Be wise with the planning and make sure you have something to eat even when you are left alone. If a person squanders and yolo off all the money and at the end of the day, comes back and blame that he has low-income (when he didn't strive or work hard to get a job) and say how come no support.. Always gotta sow first before reaping right? Reaping from other people's land also not nice right? Unless all had agreement the hardworking farmers are willing to give to the lazybums. I have people who loves to earn money and find ways to earn it, to be able to travel a few times in a year. At the end of the day, equip and make yourself valuable that you can make choices, to eat cai ping or the steak, not just 'no choice, I can only afford cai png' . Let's say if 60% of the population (just an example) is having the same mindset of pushing and striving, we will continue to grow and standard of living will definitely increase when the spending power is higher. There will be demand and supply for this group, which caters to their lifestyle, likings and ability. But, the cai png has been around, and will still be around for the remaining 40%. Strive and find ways to be the one that determine your own worth instead of putting it on other's hands if you really wanna get out of this? If not, can continue to stay and left with cai png situation. Looking at the big picture, for taxes, what are the uses? If it's meant to help us tide through rainy days like these, and not getting our nation bankrupt or cause trouble for the next gen, then I'm okay with it. If anyhow squander, like some King uses the taxpayer money and brings the whole group of concubine and book a hotel for himself on an airplane, then that's not okay.😂 Good that we can discuss from different perspectives. @Michal Blaszczak I love the spirit of independence in the people in sg. Even the handicapped, or old aunties and uncles, they sell tissues instead of waiting for money to drop into the bucket. You help yourself. When in need, get the proactive help like getting a new job. It's a matter of choices. I'm sure there's opportunities around. But if a person keep finding excuses, then this person can continue to stay on the street lo. Not sure about the US, but sg still have tonnes of jobs available. It's if you want to pick it up or not. If desperate, be the construction person? Don't blame the migrant workers for swiping all the jobs. There are migrate workers who worked themselves up getting monthly salary with humble beginning of few hundred dollars to manager in sg in $3k plus. I don't understand y people blame that opportunities are given to the foreigners. We are in the global market. We compete not just in local. But the world. See that we are so open to the world, but why not see that we have a world opened to us? I mean, if I am inadequate and doesn't meet the need of the company, I'm out. Easy as that. (if a company spend tones of money on good for nothing foreigners with no use, then I suggest can chose to hop ship liao la) Keep blaming others for own insufficiency and inadequacy .... Not helping to progress leh. Unless someone share with me some personal stories that I mislooked and didn't manage to understand the difficult situation. But looking from the people around me, all trying hard to make a living despite of difficult circumstances. No abled ones chose to beg on street or even the people of disabilities, they find suitable jobs to support themselves. Do have some leeches but didn't come across personally with the full story. @Si Dunue yes of course, by removing pension from the system but leaving it only for the ministers. Its logical, without them we would still be third word. Its fair, its practical and it had proven to be working wonderfully for the last few decades. Wouldnt you agree it is the best form of welfare?

Simple math 1.5mins x 3 = 4.5mins for PAP You ask why? Think about it, look at the questions... Chee Soon Juan --- "Your government policy is so bad, x y z".... etc.... It is a 3 v 1 debate, work it out yet? He needs to respond equally 1.5 mins answer to each 1.5mins question.
