Great vid, I agree that the two main things I look for in these kinds of wrenches is width of the box end and how tight the ratcheting mech is. Nothing is more madding than having a ratcheting wrench that is to thick to get into a space and will not tighten the bolt/nut until it is in tight. Lots of cussing that can be avoided at the right times.

Solid work. Not being at all critical, but just chipping in on engineering, which I'll explain if needed. Idea that thicker on open end for a reason I think plausible, but my gut is that it works in bending moment opposite of what you suggested. More torque can be applied on open end, then perhaps weaker ratcheting end.

I disagree on the length only bc i have 0 offset flex and non flex XL wrenches as well as gear wrench XL 120xp wrenches. Not just that. The mwuakees tolerances anti slip feature and v groove are a hive improvement. But like you said there's a case for both. Every tool has it's place. Some people are getting 1 set others have many for specific applications.

There's a place for the XL and the regular length ones. You can't get the XL in to alot of spots you can the shorter one's. Also the X frame ratcheting wreches don't hold uo to professional use overtime the box end will end up cracking and the box end is to thick the 120xp is far better.

I too am a diy guy not a mechanic. With that said I have never found a need for a flex head wrench. I use sockets with flex ratchets a lot. I use my socket sets about 95 percent of the time instead of wrenches. A flex head Ratchet can solve alot of issues you cannot solve with any kind of wrench. They can solve the angle issue but also the depth issue with extentions. Just my 2 cents have a nice day.

If I was a betting man, i would lay money on what GearWrench do with their products V the others. You have to remember that GW pioneered the ratcheting wrench when Noah was still in diapers. They have made and sold more ratcheting wrenches than anyone I know could count. You don't get to do that unless your products are up to scratch. In this case it would be pertinent to ask how many teeth the Milwaukee wrenches have. To my way of thinking they probably have about 87 or so and in that case they are much bigger teeth than the GW and therefore much harder to get ratcheting.
@ccr8002
@ccr8002 Жыл бұрын
The Gearwrench 120xp have 120 which is 60 teeth offset x 2 pawls. The Milwaukee have 144 teeth, which is 72 teeth offset x 2 pawls. The difference is barely distinguishable. I agree the backlash is severe with the milwaukees and lubricating them hasn’t helped. They may have an o-ring preventing lube entry

On the subject of the max bite open, end, ( the teeth in the open end ) and in my opinion, I believe from what I’ve gathered, Wright tool out of Barberton Ohio are the ones who first released teeth in the open end they call it the Wright grip design and to this day it is better at gripping fasteners and not rounding them off then anything on the market but the new Mac rbrt wrenches… and I am yet to verify that but torque test channel did a good video on them. They’re very new, but they crushed it on their test
@KuangTu

Regarding the box end size, from the video, GW is actually larger than Milwaukee. GW looks slimer because the chromed part surrounding the ratcheting mechanism is slimer, but it's pretty obvious that GW has a thick black ring around where Milwaukee is "hidden" inside the chrome ring. To me, that actually gives the box end on Milwaukee more strength.

Few of them are also off center slightly which result in some play. Decided to return Gearwrench and purchase Milwaukee after seeing this video.

Sadly gearwrench was having some supply chain issues. As of more recently, warranties have been coming in within a week or two according to my friend. Their normal course of action is supposed to be once a claim is made you send a picture, and get a replacement. They're supposed to follow up once your replacement has been shipped. They are active on social media, if you are having any issues, I encourage you to reach out to them as they tend to respond pretty quick. All these tools have lifetime warranties, but they're only as good as they're able to be accessed.

@@user-oe4vu2zs5e Milwaukee hand tools are hit or miss when it comes to quality, I own plenty. The battery drills I own on the other hand, no complaints, fantastic. You must remember Milwaukee hand tools are Taiwan and Chinese made, just like GearWrench, tekton, and so many other brands. Something to keep in mind, there are many knockoffs of these tools because they are made overseas, oftentimes the same factory that makes Milwaukee or gearwrench, also makes the cheaper counterparts. The used dies and stamps can be used by those looking to profiteer off a name.

One point you missed is that the 120XP GearWrench products all have a 3 degree arc due to the 60 tooth pawls in the box end. No one else has this, at this point in time. This 3 degree swing of arc is a huge plus when you are working in confined spaces. That aside, you completely fooled me with your review, I was expecting the love affair that America has with Milwaukee to rule the review instead you came up with a review that was both balanced and insightful. Well done.

Yes, I agree with most commenters. Well done comparison. Just goes to show how well a simple video can get the job done. After hours of comparing the different combination wrench offerings, I opted to go with Milwaukee's Ratcheting Combination Wrench Sets. Man, that's a significant investment, and seeing your comparison almost gives me buyer's remorse. Couple questions for you and anybody else who'd like to chime in. Any concerns about warranting out a broken GearWrench locally, like at Home Depot? Seems obvious they'll have the Millwaukee wrenches on the shelf, and only certain GearWrench sizes, if any. And, how much can you really torque on these ratcheting ends, before they give out? I'll probably use breaker bar and six point socket for that purpose, but I'm curious how much these can handle? Don't see too many videos about that.
@TheFullNeilson
@TheFullNeilson 2 жыл бұрын
The strength is completely size dependent. You have to think of each one as different sized ratchet. The big ones will handle a lot. Think 1/2 ratchet strength. The tiny one would be like a 1/4 inch ratchet. I like you have other tools for abuse. Fixed end wrenches and 6 point sockets with breaker bars. As far as the warranty is concerned I have not had to use it so I cannot speak to that. Thanks for your comment. Have a nice day.

Not sure why you compared the 120XP to the Milwaukee's. Wouldn't Gearwrench's standard length ratcheting 12 point set be a more "equal" comparison especially when there's any discussion on wrench length or configuration (12 point vs spline). For those that lack the knowledge/awareness, spline style fasteners were developed and utilized in the aircraft engine industry and are a completely different type of fastener, splined end wrenches are for splined fasteners and will not perform well in higher torque applications when used on standard 6 point fasteners. Truly not an apples to apples comparison.
@noneya135
@noneya135 2 жыл бұрын
If he did that then then the rest of the wrench wouldn't be comparative. This is as close to apples to apples as you can get when comparing open end/higher tooth count (double paw design). Gearwrench does not offer the same tooth count or open end offering in their standard size wrenches.
@kevinpeck8485
@kevinpeck8485 Жыл бұрын
@@noneya135 Yup, thanks for making my point. Gearwrench doesn't offer a comparative wrench. So, to specifically choose a set of wrenches advertised and designed to be extra-long then compare them to another brands standard length and present that as a negative is disingenuous and is not a fair comparison. Milwaukee is far superior and evidenced in other tests it has proven to be one of the toughest on the market.

I have 15 sets they're all 12pt, I wish I could find nice spline wrenches. Don't like the Matco or 120xp. Too fragile, two 60t gears , ONE pawl and when one gear ⚙️ doesn't jive with the other gear the wrench is busted! Give me a 90T , bc I really like the spline, and they ask a fortune for these with no features, not even a directional arrow.

I love watching these videos and buying tools is addictive. But, 50 dollar is all you need in tools for your vehicle. You need a cheap set of sockets(mine was 20 dollars from O'reilly) , a crescent wrench (cheap husky)to fit into them tight spaces, and craftsman flat head and phillips. The rest should be spent on good oil, oil filters, air filters, to keep your car/truck running. If it never falls apart, you will never need these fancy tools.
@TheFullNeilson
@TheFullNeilson Жыл бұрын
I completely disagree. I started with the cheap 20 dollar set. I would go to do a job and I would not have a size big enough or my set would skip sizes and the size I would need was missing. That is just for the more standard jobs. You failed to mention all the speciality tools to do certain jobs. Every time I have done a job on a vehicle over the last 17 years I always sat down afterwards and considered what I was missing that I needed or what would have made the job easier. I then used the money I saved doing the job myself to buy more tools. This has resulted in the acquisition of alot of tools over the years. I almost never have to go buy or rent tools I was previously missing. I am also able to do more complex jobs my self. Another point I will add is that none of the tools I have purchased have gone down in price over the years. If you mix that with the decline of the dollar and fewer people becoming mechanics which is driving the price of a good mechanic through the roof it makes a lot of sense to learn to do what you can yourself and own good tools. I would suggest if you think that's all you need to keep a car on the road that you have very little experience fixing anything beyond the most basic things.
