Oh man, you just explained my transmission in 3 1/2 minutes. I had the idea but had no idea how it really worked. Fantastic. I also have a 2001 Wrangler with the NV3550. Damn thing sounds like a jet engine coming up to speed. I'm about ready to swap it with an AX-15.

Very nice explanation. Appreciated. After draining the oil in my TJ and seeing the condition of the oil (bad), I got a pretty good idea of why I have a worn synchronizer and grinding while going into 4th.

thank you for this video, my 01 TJ's throwout bearing went out several years ago...right in the middle of traffic...so I had to be very forceful in order to get back to the house...someone once told me that my synchronizers may have gotten chewed up in the process...it will grind slightly if my rpm is too high with the clutch in...at least now I know how it works, thank you again, great video.

Have a 2000 TJ with the nv, had rebuilt couple years ago but is popping out of 2nd gear on 2nd gear starts....also thinking of going to AX15, not sure if the taller 1st gear will allow 1st gear starts that are tough with the nv in city driving. Also read nv parts are getting hard to find where AX15 are still available

Can the nv do 2nd gear starts without issues if in good working order ?

Good explanations! I have a used NV3550 on my bench right now waiting to go in my Jeep. It won't shift well, especially 3-4, lots of sticking. Looks like I need new shift forks. If cleaned a bunch of junk/sludge out of transmission and it shifts way better on the bench than when I started but 3-4 and 5-R are still stiff. No OEM shift forks any more, do you have feedback about the 3rd party ones available? I've heard some bad reviews but don't know which are better quality. It would be a huge help. Thanks!

I'm curious if you can swap out a synchro without all the specialty tools they say are required in the factory service manual. Seems like if I were to buy all those tools and a rebuild kit, I would be in it more than the cost of a new Ax15.

Do you think a competent "home mechanic" could rebuild one of these transmissions with an off-the-shelf rebuild kit?

I had a question I have a NV3550 on a 01 jeep Cherokee, it pops out of 1st gear and only 1st gear, would that be a synchro or a seal on the shifter?
