Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7. Prior to installation into this Jeep, the transmission is being rebuilt to improve its usefulness.

Hey I want to say thank you for your videos on the AX15 rebuild saved my butt in a couple spots forgot which way this or that went back together. Followed your steps just took the XJ for a test drive yesterday and everything works great!! Pretty stoked so many parts all working together. FYI I used the angle syncro rings on 4th gear the ones that came with the kit, they work fine. Keep up the good work!!

Glad to hear you were able to rebuild your transmission.. Mind if i ask how long that took? Pretty sure My xj needs synchronizers and a reverse gear and im just wondering

@@MileytheJeepV2 Video taping and lighting makes it take 3x as long.... But if it was my first time with out all of that, but still taking my time with the instructions and learning what I was doing... I believe it would take me 4-5 hours. Now that I have done one, it would only take me 2-3 hours. Those are just modest numbers. Give yourself time for finding an unexpected part that you need to replace/order. Cheers! Mike

@@MileytheJeepV2 Hey, it took about a month. But if I had worked on it every day probably a week or so. My input shaft bearing was toast causing it to pop out of 1st gear. My reverse gear was a little chewed up. I found a kit on EBay that worked great. Be real careful removing the snap rings. I messed one up what a pita that was to find a replacement. Take your time lots of zip lock bags and tables. Keep everything in order as you remove it. I found a manual online that shows the tear down and reassembly. Good luck

Big Fat Thank You....followed your videos step by step during my AX15 rebuild. Rebuild came out just fine considering your very involved step by step videos....Thanks again. Could not have done it without you... As for marking the parts as they came out, I used sandwich bags & a paint pen marking each bag to the repair manual page #. Helped me alot during the reinstall.... As for my AX15, front main bearing was toast but went ahead with a full rebuild...could not be happier. Repair manuals are great but we need guys/girls to walk us through the visual steps via their videos.

AX15 back in my restored 97 Jeep Wrangler, 4.0L...shifts smooth as silk. Before, front bearing shot (you should see the photo), sounded as if it was going to come apart in 5th. I'm just amazed out how a $400 rebuild kit, my attention to details, and your videos saved my ass..... I'm a confident engine builder. 4.7 Stroker in my 97 Wrangler....this was my first transmission rebuild. Thanks for the new skill sets....

I have the same build on my 79 CJ7. I have a complete power train from Novak that includes 5.3, AX15 and Dana 300. I originally had 3.54 gearing with 32" MTR tires. With the ax15 5th gear at .79 ratio I did not have enough gear. In October I just upgraded my gears to 4.10 with Detroit TruTrac and 1 Piece Axles . All I have to say my jeep now runs incredible. I have all the gearing I need. At 65 MPH I am around 2275 RPMs.

Stumbled across your channel today and absolutely love the content you're putting out. You tackle projects almost the exact way I do.....I even make up 3 ring binders with info I print out from the web and study it before I actually do the work. My thrust washer broke. Then I broke 3rd gear selector. To be able to move the jeep. And forgot to put thrust washer in. Been a while so rewatching some videos on it.

Hey... now automatic transmissions are another story! I would love to assist someone with experience do one. Otherwise, always have a fallback... someone that is willing to take your box of disassembled parts and put it back together! ;) Definitely worth researching the effort for the T-10.

First part I’m watching now I’m thinking hell yeah I’m gonna do it when the time comes. I rebuilt and re-geared my dana 44 and currently in transfercase rebuild. I’m all for this I sure like a good challenge. This guy explains real well.

The shop that built mine (Anaheim gear 😭 ca) Couldn’t do a half way decent job. Trans had a leaky input and I called and asked if I could just pull the motor and reseal it. They said yes. No more leak but I get noise with the clutch out. I encourage anyone to try cause it can’t be worse than mine done by a shop

Just came across your video while looking for ar5 rebuild info and this transamission seems to share the body and size of the Aisin ar5's that were in the colorados up to 2008. Might come in handy. Thanks for the video!

Yes. I believe they are extremely similar. I remember seeing reference to it when I rebuild mine. Can’t remember the difference off hand. Cheers!

Oils... I seem to recall that GL-4 is what is needed anytime a system has yellow metals.

That is correct. There is a GL-5, but it is not recommended with yellow metals. I use a GL-4 product.

Do you happen to have like a tool list or something to show me all the tools i would need to do this project? Currently about to tear my ax-15 out and rebuild and this video is definitely the reason i'm ganna try and do it myself. Great content and thanks for sharing your experience!

I actually don't. Off the cuff, there are a few items that I can think of that might not be in everyone shop. 12 Ton Hydraulic Press (HF), Bearing Separators (I believe I used two different Sizes, HFrieght), Pulley Puller, a good pair of Snap Ring Pliers, and Feeler Gauges. That should get you started. I really enjoyed the Trans project. I learned so much. Cheers, have fun, and be safe! Mike

Several questions for you: 1 Is there a tailshaft for this transmission that can be used for a two wheel drive system ?. 2 Can this system be modified to use a mechanical clutch (not hydroloilc ?) 3 What system or combination of systems can be used to install this transmission using a old school mopar engine (pre-1962) 1955 241 hemi?

I believe there are 2WD versions of this transmission. Not sure if there are any issues with placing the 2WD tail section on a 4WD version. Assuming the output shaft would need to be swapped out possibly. Both mechanical and hydraulic clutch options are available. That is independent of the Trans.

I am later here. I like the video, very thorough. I am making a Plymouth valiant project with 360 mopar. Would this ax15 hold up to the 360? Close to 400hp and tq. I like sticks and a 5 speed would be great.

I'm not sure. There certainly are stronger transmissions out there.

I am not an expert, but here is what I have determined and believe to be true (and am going with)... The Original Manual specifies a lubricant with a GL-5 spec. They have since determined that GL-5 is very harmful on the Yellow metals in the transmissions (These are your Synchronizing Rings). They now recommend a GL-4 Lubricant, so that is what I am going with. I will be using Redline MT90 GL-4 (75W90). I have already purchased it, so that is what I will use. Hope that helps!

When you deal with a O-Ring plug like the lock ball. Hit the face of it with a large face punch or hammer. It will break free with no effort.

How much experience did you have with transmissions before this project? I have learned more in teh last 36 minutes than in the previous 55 years. Do you know how much money you had in the trans once you were all done with it? I might have to buy one for $1000 or more...

Before this project , I had never seen the inside of a transmission! I am extremely mechanically inclined and love to learn new things. Reading through the service manual, I was convinced that I could do it. At the end of Part 3 (kzfaq.info?o=U&video_id=cmgu-4TxcAI), I listed the breakdown and the total cost that I have in this Transmission ($586). It was a fascinating experience. I never could find thee reason that they offered an "Update" on the 5th gear. Only that they offered under a different part number the item that I used.

UCanDoIt2 I did find somewhere that earlier AX15 popped out of gear a lot. But apparently they fixed it in later models. Mine is a 94 so I'm just going to assume it has it lol

snowgoer540 The Aisin units 5th gear is the weakest gear in the whole tranny. Guys riding the shifter with their hand going down the road will also mess 5th gear up. Toyota has owned Asin for years and I’ve rebuilt my share of them over the years. Hard parts for them can be very pricey,

I believe I misspoke in the video. This is an AX15 out of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0L straight 6. Therefore it was a YJ.

I appreciate that Matt!!! Currently with all the sanding that is going on, I have to open the doors to help get the dust out. It is extremely hot and humid outside right now. I will keep plugging away at it. I may have to plan on a little shorter content per video through this time. I have the next vid 3/4 completed. You are welcome. This link is a great resource for gearing. www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html Do not go by the actual tire size on your tires as most tires are usually smaller. Make sure you measure your tires and use the actual size.
