A Love Letter to Japanese Cars [4k]

Gears and Gasoline

5 жыл бұрын

It’s likely evident to the keen-eyed observer that for a channel with a name as inclusive as “Gears and Gasoline”, we tend to pay the most attention to only one segment of the automotive market: Japanese imports. We are unabashed fans of Japan’s work in the industry, and this weekend’s video will be an indulgent love letter to all things Japanese car.
NOTE: If you’re confused by the relevancy of the anxiety-inducing intro to the rest of the video, I am too. In my head, the sequence segwayed more seamlessly into the discussion about Japanese cars, as I was looking at Mitsubishis. The intro doesn’t really fit tonally though, to be honest, but I liked it too much to cut it.
Special thanks to Jon, Wendall, Rapp, Chris Driver, and Driver Motorsports for helping make this video possible.

Footage throughout was sourced from manufacturer commercials, WRC mini-docs, compilation videos, and of course, Hot Version.

Something I've always felt about Japanese cars, though I could be wrong, is that they have a culture of making something amazing out of the ordinary. European cars, like BMW and Porsche, used super high quality parts to reach their engineering goals, and American cars used super powerful engines to appease the culture. It was doing the basics with the best you can get. Japanese cars have always felt like they wanted to take something ordinary, like a basic Civic or Lancer, and make the best out of what you had. Turbo your engine rather than increase displacement, engineer ways for your basic suspension to work to the highest potential. Drift because your turbo doesn't respond as quickly as a V8, and practice your driving skills so you don't lose because of your income. It was an automotive world for people who weren't rich or lived in the country with tons of space to work. It was a culture born in driveways and under jackstands, building a reputation rather than buying one.

Your observation is on point! Japanese Automakers are taxed on engine displacement, so the question became how to increase power without increasing engine size. This led to the development of Japanese turbo’ed 4 bangers and v tech and vvtl instead of the huge v8 engines that came out of 80’s+ America. Combine that with Japanese emissions law reform in the late 80’s, and you create a need for efficiency and sustainability. Japan needed to design their automobiles to be as efficient, cheap, and reliable as possible to avoid paying higher taxes, while still meeting early emissions standards!

I wouldnt say smart. Its a mentality of continous improvement, making the very best product and always giving 100% for the customer. Also, as introverted, shy and conform Japanese are, they also like to be a little crazy in private, in their thoughts or fantasies. Boring on the outside, weird (in a good way) inside. That's why they are both great at producing normal grocery getters as well as interesting, different unique sport cars with character. Gotta love Japan.

We eat, sleep, and breathe this. There's nothing that makes me feel any other way than these cars. When our cars are down, we go into this depressed state, when they're up, all we want to do is drive them. This addiction to just these pieces of metal make us honestly happier and makes us get together in these groups to show off our passion. My car has been down for 6 months, and I just worked on it until I sat down to watch this video and honestly I cried. The Japanese are very different compared to us Americans. They care about quality. Here in America its all about the money. Don’t get me wrong us Americans have some fantastically engineered vehicles but nothing close to the Japanese. It not even just with cars the Japanese overall make very high quality products. Japanese cars will forever be my favorite and I hope we can keep this beautiful tradition for many years to come. I’m 40yo and Japanese cars have impacted me since 1998 when I saw a yellow eg hatchback and s13 getting off the highway and I found myself slowing down in my own car and staring until I couldn’t see them anymore. And since then it’s been those long creepy nights looking for parts that aren’t in my direct reach. I purchased a set of sw388 spoon wheels in 2001 and it took 6 months to get them. I’ve modeled my life around these cars and always brushed off the shit talking from American car guys who I don’t think would ever understand the precision put into those “plastic 4 bangers”. And now you find a lot of those American car makers are making their cars more in Japanese car enthusiast interests. Squeezing out ridiculous horsepower out of something that didn’t make that much power 10-15 years ago when Japanese cars were putting out more horsepower per liter n/a motors. I find myself missing those friends I made along the way with those cars. Some are still in contact and some are just really good memories when life was simple and driving was really fun and not a competition. Just enjoying what you built and not an Instagram heart. When black wheels were taboo and watching videos about cars with people speaking in a language you wished you could speak. Great video and thank you for the memories

It's good to see that my crew and I aren't the only ones obsessed about Best Motoring and JDM cars. Seeing a GTR or a Supra, even at this age makes me feel like a child meeting my childhood heroes! like you said, we'd probably never get tired of having them in our lives.. My fsmily's Accord Euro R is such a big part of my life, I feel its an extension of me. It's engine really speaks to me. It feels like its got a soul! Hope everyone feels the same about something in their lives!

I can relate..... I've owned 3 Civics and an Integra, JDM parts on all and two had swaps. Now I'm in my 40's with a job, wife and kids. I couldn't ride my motorcycle to work anymore so I bought a Chevy Cruze (it is a hatch and 6 speed). The Cruze is reliable and gets good mileage, but it does nothing for my soul. I miss the howl of VTEC and knowing I was in the "Honda club." Trust me I understand!

Very relatable video. I have an interest in all Japanese cars, but have been obsessed with 80s and 90s Toyotas since I was about 10 or 11. I went to rally stages here in Ireland where almost every competitor was driving a Subaru or Mitsubishi, but a couple of guys were competing in Celica GT-Fours and Corollas which were so different looking to the 4 door Imprezas and Evos. I fell in love with the GT-Four and now drive a 1994 JDM ST205 which is my pride and joy. I also have my sights set on adding a JDM SW20 MR2 to my garage next year.

Try being the one who starts the conversation. If someone or a few people are around a car that you are interested in just ask. I can guarantee you that they would love to help you learn and share stories about their car with you. We're one big family. Talking about our cars is something we love to do. I won't lie though, there are some people who are just plain rude and you can't take it to heart. The majority of people you'll meet and speak with are genuine and are probably excited you love cars too. Next time you're at a show, don't be afraid to just ask questions. You'll learn more than you think and you'll meet amazing people along the way. :)

I think the Prius deserves some love. I mean, it's not fast at all, but that's not what it was built to be. It was built to be reliable and fuel efficient, which it does extremely well. Cars should be judged by if they're good at what they were designed for. Like, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is awesome because it's extremely fast. The Toyota Prius is awesome because it's inexpensive and efficient.
