A holy rite of passage for any young car enthusiast is learning to drive stick shift. But why, in the age of single-speed, self-driving Teslas, is the manual transmission still relevant at all? We discuss.

Gears and Gasoline okay, like first of all, I think this is the best produced film I've ever seen on KZfaq, I shit you not. Second of all, that is one badass Ford -- does he get shit for that license plate in front? Lastly, I don't know what it is: I grew up on sticks but after my first automatic, I stuck to automatic. Maybe I got lazy or I feel like it's "luxury" to have an automatic. But I know this: when I drive my buddy's GTI (which is stick), it's as if I never forgot how to shift. I do it effortlessly, like riding a bicycle. And it's a blast!

Gears and Gasoline for me stick will always have a special place in my heart because my dad taught me how to drive in a manual Hyundai Elantra. I remember when I first started I hated it but kept at it mostly because he force me but I’m glad he did because now I love it and can’t see myself driving automatic.

@@JoshuaTootell How do you like your Fiesta? My dad's going to teach me to drive manual, but I can't borrow his car forever to practice (I'm 34 years old and obviously don't live at home anymore lol). So, I'll need to buy my own manual. I'm a Toyota fangirl, and had a manual Corolla in mind. But at $12,000, the Fiesta is so inexpensive and awfully tempting. It's $10,000 less than the Corolla. I don't need anything fancy, I just need a manual that isn't too difficult for a beginner.

@xerrio4
@xerrio4 4 жыл бұрын
@@lolvovolvo I think you are mistaking "automatic robotic" and "automatic/manual sequential" gearboxes. -It is not possible to execute what G V described in a robotic gearbox unless in a special race/sport mode allowing for instant downshift and rev matching to red zone when a "low rev threshold" would be touched during deceleration which would be really bad when you would be drifting in a curve or taking a tight corner because you don't want to constantly shift in this scenario. You'd just want to hit the rev-limit breaker (PA PA PA PAPA!) at maximum most of the time without going up and down 4 times in a row (loosing traction 4 times by the same way) because you sit in-between two speeds and can't be precise enough at the limit with all vibrations going through the car during a drift. It might work if you want to play exclusively grip and not drift... but I still doubt it and from what I can see in GT racing, they all use sequential paddle-shifters gearboxes. -If you want to skip a gear and to go from 4 to 2 (to prepare for a nasty turn by using a "double clutching") or to go from 2 to 4 (big acceleration until legal limits and going eco afterwards) your automatic robotic gearbox will never be able to understand it fast enough and will most of the time not skip the gear doubting on your intentions. A double clutch automatic (sequential in fact) can do it by double tapping the paddle but you will lack the connection between the pilot and the car, the feedback through your left feet when you engage the clutch allowing for the other feet to know he can engage the accelerator... this very feedback making you take more and more risks with it until you can accelerate right at the moment you engage the manual clutch! And sometimes even before for a "clutch kick"! How can a computer know that you want to "clutch kick" or not? The muscle memory allows you to know your car better than a computer stupidly awaiting for information from sensors and to be faster because you anticipate what will happen unlike it. -If the automatic robotic gearbox is not in "sport mode", it will not automatically rev-match (heel toe) for you when downshifting by reading your mind if you are driving in eco mode. You will have to press a button to switch modes before to indicate that you wish to empty your fuel tank. It will not downshift either unless the break pedal is pushed severely. A sequential automatic will rev-match in sport mode. Manual Civics to it. My brain do it on my manual mx3. -An automatic gearbox is always heavier than a manual. -If you forget in which gear you are in, you don't need to look at a screen and to ignore the road for a split-second with a manual. The position of the lever in your hand is enough information. After all that being said : -I would love to try a manual sequential gearbox from a WRC/X car with a manual clutch included for double clutching. -I would like to try a double clutch sequential transmission gearbox to see if I can do a U-turn fast enough. -I still prefer manual transmissions with short-shifters for the simplicity and effectiveness of the design allowing for fast shifting and light gearboxes. -I want the car to do what I want her to do when I want to do it.

Have you driven a manual 2000 Chevy Corsa 1.3L? It does NOT feel like a race car. Each gear is a mile away from the previous one and the clutch is completely limp and keeps going down into the floor endlessly before disengaging. There are some serioualy boring and unengaging manuals, much like there are some surprisingly fun automatics out there.

jrs_ 2000 Honda makes really good transmissions and good-handling cars, a GM economy car is everything a Honda economy car isn’t: Honda cares about their economy cars and making sure they’re not dreadful to drive, GM only cares about cars they can sell with an LS. So yeah, it really is your Civic’s virtue that it’s fun despite being slow, the same applies to Miatas and older BMW’s, they’re slow, but they’re made to be driven, and you can enjoy them because they have decent platforms. Get in a Corsa or a Fiat Palio and you’ll experience a driving experience that a manual gearbox couldn’t save.

Your statement that almost nobody in America knows how to drive them is not exactly true. People under 30 maybe, I am 45 and when I grew up stick shift cars where a lot more prevalent. Almost all of your sporty cars and base model cars had sticks. A lot of pickup trucks were stick shift. I would say half of the base model trucks were stick shift. Ford Ranger pickups, S10 pickups , Nissan trucks (before the big Titan) etc etc . A big percentage of these trucks were stick. Mazda mini trucks back in the 80's and early 90's you were hard pressed to find one in automatic. Almost everybody I know in my age range and older know how to drive a stick.

to be honest, after I turned 21, I hated getting older, I hate birthdays, I'm scared of graduating, scared of growing up, scared of the future... but after watching this video and getting into cars, it helped me see the world from such a different perspective. Life is so beautiful, and much to look forward to. I struggled with depression since I was young and only for a few years ago it's been getting a lot better. I feel like I'm slowly falling back into depression until recently I found out my dream car is finally for sale (about to purchase this Saturday). I feel like I've been given a second chance to live/cars saved my life... I'm now really excited how far in life when I can get in my car. I'm excited to meet my future friends who will have the same hobby as I do, I'm excited to find really close friends I can go cruising all night with, I'm excited to travel to different cities, states, countries in my car, I'm excited to go to car meets and make friends, I'm excited to upgrade and buy mods for my car, I'm excited to be free.. I'm excited to live life. I finally have something to look forward to, I finally have a goal, I finally have passion. I've been depressed for so long when I realized I no longer wanted to go into my major that I'm almost done with.. I felt like a failure, but now I feel like I have a new hope, new light. Thanks for making this video and sorry for venting. This video really touched me and made me realize how much I appreciate life

Another thing to consider is a driver can anticipate a better gear for upcoming conditions. I see a hill coming up, so I shift from 5th to 4th and build a little boost before barreling up the grade. Corner ahead? I’m going to want 3rd so I can power right out no fuss. It’s not about how fast you can slam though gears, it’s about control and hell yeah it’s enjoyable.

I've been able to drive so many vehicles just because I can shift gears myself. It's also nice to get compliments from others who never expect it. My old manager for instance, let me drive his '69 camaro (loved it) because I have experience. People don't get why I love driving a stick shift car so much but to me it's much more engaging and fun. Quite honestly I don't see myself giving up driving a manual until I no longer physically am able to.

EDIT: wait no, I've legit seen some Manual electrics out there, mostly converted S-10's, but the clutch still works and it can be shifted like normal, only real difference is there's no real need to clutch in or shift to neutral when stopping, and it can be driven as a single speed automatic if you just shove it into 5th and leave it there. otherwise, if you actually can drive stick, I'd imagine the acceleration of that thing would be insane

Clutch, gear, power... clutch gear power. Throwing it through some s bends at high speed and then dropping down a gear before you turn into a tighter section and power out the other side within the peak power band... I think with the UK, where if you do your test in an auto you can only drive auto. That gives people incentives to learn to drive manual. I think the only real reason why people don’t drive autos a lot here in the UK is cost, if you’re getting an automatic, you’re talking an extra £1,500-£3,000 extra on a car. Another reason why is most old cars have manual gearboxes, which pushes young people into driving a manual because when you first pass your test its so much cheaper to insure. However, now the government is pushing electric cars, manual cars will go down in numbers. With electric, there isnt any point in having a manual gearbox. So more and more people will be getting auto. My instructor said this to me when i told her i was thinking of doing my test in an auto “Driving a manual is like learning to ride a bike, once you know how to do it, you won’t ever forget how to drive manual.”

Automatics are cheaper maintenance wise. Until you have to replace your trans that can give out after 200k but with sticks you've probably had to replace your clutch multiple times and repair cost wise almost equals the same because of that. Unless the auto trans just completely craps out.

As a Brit, and only having my license for a year now. I've been driving a manual, and have never been in an automatic, yet I have no intention of ever going near one. The control you get from a manual transmission is incredible! If you've never been in a manual, take a few lessons and give it a go. once you can do it its not at all difficult or a hassle, its completely worth it when you get that perfect shift through all the gears.

Honestly at this point arguing that Manual Transmission is better than Automatic is like arguing that mechanical watch movements are better than quartz. One is meant to be used, the other is meant to be enjoyed. Quartz movements are just objectively better at telling time. A $20 Casio quartz watch will keep a far more accurate time than a $10,000+ Rolex. That's just fact. That doesn't mean the Mechanical watch isn't worth thousands of dollars, but the point of the Rolex is not precise timekeeping, it's about artistry and fashion, and functional beauty. The quartz watch is cheap, boring, not really meant to look that nice, it's just about telling time. That same difference applies to manual vs automatic, one is meant to be used, the other is meant to be enjoyed. At this point, automatics are just better at getting you from A to B, they are dead simple to use, efficient, and boring.

As Nicholas said, the watch analogy doesn't work here. A quartz is better in everyway. A manual car has the benefit of being cheaper and in some countries even have less tax due to being lighter. That's why you see a lot of cars with shifting indicators. You are still as efficient while being way cheaper to pay for immediatly and down the road.
@sandertu8366
@sandertu8366 4 жыл бұрын
Your analogy has some problems. 1. Stick shift is more reliable and takes longer to wear out and in some problem cases the problems can be subverted. 2. Stick shifters are cheaper. 3. Stick shifters keep more of the drivers FOCUS ON THE DARN ROAD. So in your actual analogy, The quarts is the manual. useful in all use cases. Reliable when used how it is intended. Cheaper. And also does all the things that the 2000-3000 euros more costing automatic transmission does and in more extreme cases does it better. And when that change is done your analogy makes perfect sense. Automatics are for looks and comfort not for utility. They are more expensive.
@AnnatarTheMaia
@AnnatarTheMaia 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the point of a Rolex or an Omega is extremely precise time keeping, which is why a high quality mechanical Swiss watch will have a jewel, like a Ruby, whereas a cheap one will have a quartz. Quartz clocks are actually very poor at correct time intervals because of impurities in the sand. This becomes painfully obvious in servers where the clock crystals are Quartz, which is why every correctly configured server will synchronise his time with an external time source over NTP protocol.

Thanks for making this video. I really want my friends who aren't car enthusiasts to understand the hype behind manual transmissions. I can see why most people wouldn't care for car culture if it's not presented the right way. Imagine if an anime fan ran around saying that if you don't try watching anime then you're too much of a normie or you're not interesting. Of course people will want to back away from cars if enthusiasts go around yelling about how manuals are the only real way to drive a car.

Really, I don't get what the video is trying to say. It's the whole logic versus emotional argument problem. They say that vehicle technology has all ready developed to the point that modern automatics are significantly smoother and more fuel efficient, but manuals are better because it feels cool. Pretty much all the arguments people have in favor of manual drive has been negated, and the best argument for it now is feeling connected to your car. If a person prefers manual over automatic, that's great for them. Not everyone is looking to micromanage their driving or needs to feel like they are one with their machine. And that's okay as well. Some mechanics can tell something is wrong by how their wrench feels on a bolt. Doesn't change the fact that the wrench is just a tool and the true skill is in the operator.

After a painful automatic experience with an Ibiza Cupra for 2 years, I went straight back to manual. Although it was shifting quicker than a manual (it was a DSG) it cost me much more money on repairs and sometimes I had to leave my car at the shop for days. After deciding that I couldn't take it any more, I sold it for dirt cheap and got me a manual V40 T4. Now I am happier than ever. Hopefully I will have Polestar software installed in it soon.
