GED QOD: Undefined Expressions

The non-calculator section of the GED math test often features "undefined expression" problems that ask you to determine which value of the variable make the expression undefined. Follow along as Kate interprets this problem in light of what we already know about arithmetic and applies it to this concept.

So you add the numbers then it comes out to be negative 11- correct ?

Not here. All we are looking for is VALUES of x that would make the DENOMINATOR (bottom) of the fraction turn into 0, because that would make this expression UNDEFINED (meaning, very simply, that an answer doesn't exist, the math couldn't be done. We can't divide by zero.). If you plugged 3 into this account, it would make the denominator 0, and we can't divide by 0. Undefined. If you plug in -2, same thing occurs. Does that make sense?

So basically we get x alone and the remaining values will be the answer ?

This isn't an equation, so we can't isolate the variable (get the letter alone). The main thing that you should understand from this problem is that you cannot divide by zero, it is undefined. Since a fraction is an act of division the bottom of a fraction cannot be zero. Any value for x that would turn that entire denominator into zero would make this expression undefined.
