CDM is actually the most difficult position. That’s why top teams have top CDMs

This video was amazing. We need more of this. CDM is such an overlooked area and under appreciated role

CDM is the hardest positions to play especially single pivot, you need vast experience to play there in top flight football that’s why you rarely see young lads from club academies break into the team as a CDM. Academy Strikers and wingers because if they mess up there is no too little consequence.

1. Follow the opponents press, then: a. Become a passing option. Turn forward and pass forward. b. Make space and be the third man. ( attract opposition toward your possession of the ball to make space for teammates.) c. When the opposing midfield jumps and runs deep forward find the space behind the enemy mf and capitalize. d. Overload in a wide area, create numerical advantages for your team, make as much 2v1 scenarios as possible.

This position is hard especially when you are in charge of having to close any gaps created in the midfield they are dead springs back to back , also handling pressure is very tough for many cdms , one mistake and boom you get a counter attack easily 👍 you have to be very smooth when turning and handling pressure

Yeah easiest on video when you are creating plays and watching the pros do it rather than actually doing it yourself. CDM is absolutely one of the hardest positions out there that if you mess up you’ll most likely end up costing your team

fantastic video, i would like too add number 5. which is when the left back pushes high up and the midfielder drops near the left backs position although this usually happens when teams dont do a full on press but sort of a semi press, kroos is a master at this. cheers

CDM is where the real ballers play IMO. The 6 is the life blood, the engine, the heartbeat of the midfield. If your CDM isn’t clicking, your midfield isn’t connecting between the phases of play. Wish I could convince the kids this is the best position, not being some winger.

Choose your Defensive Midfielder type: 1) Anchor/Holding Midfielder 2) Deep Lying Playmaker 3) Destroyer/Ball Winner 4) Box-To-Box Anchor + Deep Lying Playmaker in double pivot formation are best thing if i want keep the ball. But if i want gegenpress and high press like crazy, i will choose Destroyer and Box-To-Box

great video and editting. i would only argue that cdm is one of the most difficult positions to play because of the defensive role, being able to rotate, and constant awareness of the game. vision, reading the game and using ur brain + amount of ground covered would be what separates the good and the great cdms. all aspects which is harder to acquire than something like being able to run fast like a winger. playing great defense is almost always much harder than playing great offense as the man with the ball has the advantage.

Yeah its kind of easy cause you have to be more good off the ball than on the ball (you just have to be there in between the press all the time even if you don't get passed), simple turning and long range passing to switch and stretch play is all you need, scanning is also what you need and is more important for CDMs than any other position to avoid losing the ball

Another good video, but I think it's important to clarify that this is one small aspect of playing the position--what to do in possession against one type of press. The out-of-possession phase is more difficult for CDM.

its hard when your other teammate makes you job even harder. They don't even pass to you when you are at the perfect positioning. The weight of the pass and location where they pass to you. They don't provide option for me to pass when i get the ball.

Offensively, yes, it’s pretty straightforward. But a CDM’s defensive role (which depends heavily on the system) is life and death. Hence why Man City never lose when Rodri plays. Edit- but even though it’s “straightforward” offensively, you still have to be excellent technically

Fundamentals are easy, but against smart pressing/gegenpress you can only pass backwards cause no time to turn

World Class CDM/No.5 is very rare. CDM is the most important position to win the league/cup run in my opinion. Just look at how many years Arsenal suffered without the replacement for Patrick Viera.
