Episode 17 of Critical Role is finally here! If you want to watch episode 18, go to: geekandsundry.com/critical-rol...
Parting ways with their beloved cleric, Vox Machina is now adrift in a strange and unfamiliar city. With heavy hearts, they wander Vasselheim in the Braving Grounds District, home to the worshippers of Kord, the deity of battle and strength.
Fittingly, Grog soon finds himself in a fighting pit, duking it out with as tough an opponent as he could ever wish for.
Later, the party spots an attacking beast high on the city walls, and true to form, Vox Machina rushes to help. Following the fleeing creature off into the dense forests outside the city, they find their prey and a whole lot more.

Barely, plus I think he meant that as in he got a lot of conversational focused time which hardly happens which is especially interesting to most fans since he plays one of the most entertaining characters in the group. @@monkemann4181 Win or lose, it was his fight to have. It was a solid period of time focused solely and entirely on him. And he came 1 HP away from winning. He lost due to a trait. And, while there was some insult, Grog was also clearly well respected after that by the actual townfolk.

In that case it'd come down to Uncanny Dodge & Vax's AC versus Grog's rage damage reduction & much larger damage. Most likely Grog takes it, but Vax's uncanny Dodge would make it atleast somewhat of a fight. (No weapons *really* hurts Vax more for obvious reasons.)

A subsection among fans certainly appreciates Taliesin. But yes, it can be frustrating when he slips in these insightful, funny, apropos, clever-as-hell lines...and they whoosh by most of the others. I enjoy all of the players/cast-members' talents in different ways, but Taliesin seems to be good at everything. I love how he lets the others shine, yet also picks the right moments to be loudly--or quietly--epic. I've heard Percy has an amazing arc in C1 and I can't wait to see it. His one-shot character, The Owlbear? Legendary. Just legendary. Of course, I am only this far in, though I've seen a ton of one-shots, interviews, and so on. Regardless, I'd love to get to know all of 'em. They all seem like not only would playing an RPG with 'em be super fun, but they're also the sorts of people who'd make great friends (with, alas, one exception).

Hey sorry can I ask if you know where the vox machina SHOW (like on prime) ends in terms of the campaign? I’ve never watched this before but I wanna keep watching from where the show left off so I’m not just thrown into it some random episode which I’m pretty sure is what I’ve done here lmao ToT I have no idea where and when this is (this episode) pleaseee if you know can you help me?
@laughterlightchats5133
@laughterlightchats5133 Жыл бұрын
@@Gumdropsss @Candy Seeker Hi! I'm a very new fan myself, but I have watched the show and a ways into the campaign at this point. The thing about the show is that it doesn't follow the events of the campaign exactly the way they occurred. The first couple episodes (with the dragon) happened in the campaign before they began streaming it and the first few arcs of the streamed campaign are skipped by the show, likely to avoid mention of Tiberius for reasons I won't go into here, but you can likely find in many other places without much effort. For this reason, I recommend starting from the beginning of the streamed campaign, daunting as it may seem, so that you don't miss things like references to guest player characters, inside jokes, and story beats that were skipped or changed. However, if you are sure you'd like to just pick up from the end of the Whitestone arc, the background color of the thumbnail of each video corresponds to each arc. The color for the Whitestone arc is light blue, and the Chroma Conclave arc picks up with the purple background right after. Again, though, I can't stress enough that the campaign and the show are quite different and you will likely be confused whether you pick up with the Chroma Conclave or right in the middle here.
@Gumdropsss
@Gumdropsss Жыл бұрын
@@laughterlightchats5133 I’ve found that it kinda picks off pretty accurately around the end of the Whitestone arc, so far I haven’t felt like totally lost and if I ever do feel like that i guess I’ll just have to watch from the beginning, but I do feel like it’s been ok so far. Since the episodes take very long though I’m still where I started lmao, kinda fell asleep mid way so i had to go back to the last thing i remembered haha, should be just a little less than an hour left of the episode (ep 36 I believe, called winters crest in Whitestone :>)

This is one of the tough decisions DMs face and Matt has made his call based on dice. However I still think, that considering the amount of roleplay that happend and how dice only decided the defeat I think it was not a correct decision to make. Reward is an important part of DnD and take it and give it to players based on pure randomness seems a bit chaotic and sometimes it just doesnt correspond with the situation.

It ought to be taught in textbooks! This is a perfect example of how a DM and a player can collaborate on creating an exciting and fascinating scene that mechanically is little more than a dice-chucking war of attrition. What could have been a very boring 20 minutes of just calling out numbers was probably the most awesome 1v1 I've ever seen in an RPG. It's crazy that this was Travis' first game.

Frankly Grog probably should’ve lost worse because I’m sure they didn’t reduce his stats given how he was supposed to remove his armor and stuff. Not to mention the advantage of applying an attack to whatever attempt he wanted as well as choosing disabling attacks like the knee shots and solar plexus. If he didn’t have the frenzied rage 3 hit perk he wouldn’t have had a chance either.

i mean, if both players had been aware of their available abilities then...who knows. neither of them rolled for relentless rage either. but far more important than either ability, grog wasn't adding his rage damage which should have been an extra 3 per hit. bringing him up to 8-9.

Didn't use advantage for his reckless attacks (but Matt wasn't attacking with advantage against him either), didn't roll with advantage for his grappling checks, didn't factor in his resistance to all the bludgeoning damage he took, didn't use Brutal Critical when he got that one crit, aaaaaaaand I'm still wondering how he had a 20 Armor Class when Matt said they stripped off their weapons and armor before the fight (would have been 17 AC with Barbarian's unarmored defense). I get the feeling that rather than worry about the details, Matt just figured out what Grog was doing and approximately matched it for Kern the Hammer.

I have a feeling Tiberius had something like that, because he uses 100% magic, and the Beholder dispelled all magic in it's line of sight, so he was adamant about not going in the temple because he was terrified of it. But we'll probably never know now. Also trying to bring allies in on the carpet to help in the fight wasn't a terrible idea, it just backfired because he failed a roll and now everyone gives him shit for it. @Grim reaper that fight was painful to watch, particularly once you know the result (grog loses by one hp) and you notice that grog forgot to add rage damage, so matt character does 7-8 damage (1d4 /2+ 4 from str mod +2 from rage) while grog does only 5-6 (1d4 /2+ 4 from str mod). and the worst is seeing the other players too busy considering ways to cheat the fight to notice that there is such a damage range disparity.

hot take: the issue here was not orion's fireball, as he did clearly mean to ask whether the hydra was 20 ft across and genuinely didn't think it would hurt his friends - the issue was his response. instead of clarifying what he meant and apologising, he got mad and then sat in silence for the entire rest of the stream, refusing to engage, messing with his things to make it clear he wasn't interested, and refusing to so much as crack a smile at any jokes. he created such an uncomfortable atmosphere all because of one mistake that he could have easily laughed off.

These characters are not in a first-world land of plenty, where food and housing is provided to the poor. They have a LOT of expenses (armor, potions, spell supplies) that they need to MAKE thier income. This is roleplay. What your complaining about, is ACCURATE role play... in a roleplay game...

The more I think about it, the more I realize how impressive it was that Grog almost beat the half-orc. Matt even said that he wasn't supposed to get that close, and he only lost because of a cheat-death racial ability. That's pretty impressive.

Unfortunately (or fortunately because we got an intense fight and a great RP segment out of it), Travis forgot to/didn't realize he could add his rage bonus damage to his hits while Matt apparently didn't.
