Thanks for the favorable comparison! This year (2020) we added Preview Scaling and Proxy editing, which significantly improves preview speed and responsiveness and reduces memory usage. We have improved multi-threaded video process during preview a little, and that will be improved soon as well. To improve stability we removed the filters that use HTML5 components and provided more stable alternatives to them.

Thank you so much for everyone at the Shotcut team and community! Since price obviously isn't an issue (all free), and I'm pretty much a newbie (used Win Movie Maker a while back), I was looking for easy to learn for youtube video making. I tried to do a simple montage of my holidays with Openshot (video, some musics and a few subtitles). I faced a lot of issues (crahes, bugs) but with some help in forums i finally made a cool 30 minutes montage with a nice F.R.I.E.N.D.S like intro. Every time I tried to export it crashed at about 20% I tried to modify what was in the timeline at that spot, looked for help on the internet and basically found that there is this issue and no one knows how to solve it. I lost days of work and could only watch the montage with my friend on the software itself with the preview function. I'm know hesitating between Shotcut and Kdenlive so thank you for your video !

Thanks for a good review. Will download and start using Shotcut thanks to your review! I tried using Blender about two years ago, but it was very slow (on my very slow computer) and the export/render process of the videos was horrible. The quality was terrible and I couldn't for the life of me get it to look even decent. As a tip for future videos: Maybe compare how well the editing programs run on a slow computer. Set up a virtual machine and limit the resources to simulate a slow machine. Could be fun. :) Anyway, thanks for a great video.

I think Shotcut is the best, but you'll quickly learn that video editors aren't at the stage where a free version can compete with a paid version of a product. Just now I had two two crashes and the "Export Frame" feature resulted in lower quality images than the video. But Shotcut is great in many instances and will get you by in the meantime.

Davinci Resolve is free and is good for professional use, although it isn't open source. There's also other free ones like Hitfilm, which are still closed source. Still it depends on your needs, and it's only a matter of time before open source gets more development and catch up.

It really depends on software/hardware for any software and at least for me and the types of projects I work on, these tools crash less than other video editors I use like Davinci or PowerDirector. Some of these editors like Kdenlive/Shotcut do have recovery crash however as with any video editor, save often. There are some appearance/theme features you can change like in Kdenlive but not sure of what colors.

People used to deride Windows Movie Maker as a bad editor. It wasn't great, but it was free and at least functional. Then Microsoft took that program for Windows 10, called it ClipChamp and put most everything behind a paywall. They then said "no, you silly pleb, you can't buy anything! We're going to RENT those features to you!" It's good to know that there are people out there who are kind enough to make a functional editor that will encourage me to donate to their project for its functionality as opposed to making me grit my teeth over greedy licensing practices. Thanks for providing some options. I don't even have to change operating systems, either. And for the 'Nix evangelicals, if I could make the move to a REAL OS that would be great, I just don't have the time and the patience anymore to get everything running through Arch or Debian.

In Shotcut, is it only one edit per project? Is there no bins function? I've been using Lightworks for a large project with a LOT of content pieces. Lightworks is a powerhouse as it allows you to create bins to organize your content and create complex edits which you can then use in other edits. The only thing is you need to pay for a license in order to export in 1080p and above. So I've been looking for an additional app for smaller projects. Shotcut seems usable, but it's only one edit per project? Can you not create different edits in one project and then combine them onto one master edit? And you can't export just a section of an edit - i.e. you have to export a whole edit every time you want to check some small section?
@GeekoutdoorsBrand
@GeekoutdoorsBrand 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not comparable to something like a Lightworks, Davinci or Premiere when it comes to more complex projects.

@@GeekoutdoorsBrand I created a simple edit using Shotcut and I have to say - I really like it! It's easy to learn; it has a pleasant interface; and it works! I like the plethora of export options. But... It's definitely lacking in features. You can't even set in and out points on your edit timeline - a simple feature they should definitely add! And it's missing other more advanced features I'm used to having when working with Lightworks which really become a necessity when your edits grow in size and complexity. I think I'll just settle for Lightworks for now. They are running 50% sale until October 11.
