5 Things I did to organize my home makerspace in 2019

This videos just a raw, one take, no fuss look at my newly organized makerspace. I talk a bit about each of the 5 main things I did to get things organized and looking good:
1) Pegboard
2) Drawers with inserts
3) Makerspace computer
4) Grid with bins
5) Ports and power strips
I can make a more detailed video if anyone thinks its needed. I took a month to get my room in order so that I could be more efficient on projects, as well as just remove a bunch of clutter and focus on my channel. I saw a lot of maker space ideas out there for commercial makerspaces, but not nearly enough ideas for a home one.
This space is 7 feet by 5 feet, off in a nook of the great room of my house. It's by no means huge, but I'm able to do quite a bit in this small space. Also the bin storage not only organizes my makerspace, but also stores some things for the entire house (actually the pegboard stores all of the tools I use for projects upstairs as well).

Yay! Yeah I was surprised when I made it at the lack of home based ideas. One that I've implemented recently that's been helpful is in the bins I now use gallon storage bags labeled with a sharpee. Inexpensive, easy, and it allows me to seperate say video cables into 'hdmi, vga, dvi' and such. Same for USB (I was having a huge problem managing usb-c, Micro, charging vs. data, etc). Hope you have a great lab update!

Thankyou!!! It was an place in the room so was happy to come up with a good design for something I love...I’m in a situation where the biggest shed I can build may be 10x7 and so now I’m wondering if I can have magic strike twice and pull off a workshop that’s smaller than most.!

Cool glad it helped! Gosh this is a bit stale, I need to make a new one now :) I'm glad this helped others..I wasn't sure if it'd be useful but I know I wish I'd seen more before I did this :)

Nice! I find the nicer I can make it the more welcoming it becomes. My wife wasn’t thrilled at first, but now she uses the tools off the pegboard more than I do (especially the tape measure!)

Awesome, awesome stuff! I'm looking into getting into making at home, and this video is endlessly inspiring. Kudos to you. And you're totally right, there aren't enough videos about home maker spaces.

I'm so glad this is helpful! Yeah when I went to do the design I was searching and was just shocked. I hope that we get more ideas and shares of home maker spaces so we can collaborate on solutions for things like filament storage, other tool organization ideas, wire sorting, etc. My bin solution works, but if the space was smaller I think there is room for improvement and efficiency

Glad it helped! One thing I recently added...I now use gallon storage freezer bags for my wires, and then label them. I also use velcro wraps (I get 100 of them off of maazon in a pack for pretty inexpensive). I split my usb cables by USB micro vs. Mini, and then usb 3.0, USBC, and extensions. So those 5 bags hold most of my usb cables, and with velcro wraps has made getting a cable a dream. it's also easy to get another bag for expanding that to say 'iOS lightnign cables'. I'm working to do the same with my power cables

Thankyou!!! I love having this stuff I just wish there was like an organization show that helped us figure out how to not only organize it away, but make it easily accessible! I’m glad this helped, it’s working good for me still but I feel like it can be better. I may have to do an update as I try some stuff out :)

Kudos to you. You are way more organized than I am. I use plastic shoe boxes labelled and stacked. Works ok since you can find the stuff, but it is always the bottom one you need. I like your ikea cube idea. Also the drawer units! Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad it helped! I actually used the shoe box method in the past and it worked well (which for me is the most important thing for organization! In this case I am just in a phase of life where I wanted to make things look nicer, and wondered if a makerspace had to look messy. In all honesty the way I use the bins is the same as the shoeboxes....they're just a bit bigger (which is great for larger stuff, but not great for things like screws/small parts..thats where the drawers came in). I'm hoping to do another video about the wiring cleanup I did, as it took me quite a while to figure out despite there being a ton of videos. But right now I'm on a home automation series that people are really enjoying and getting use out of, so gotta get some more of those out :D

GeekToolkit I would love more Home Assistant videos. I use a NUC with Proxmox. Most of my sensors and controls are MQTT enabled. Fun hobby!

Love the setup, I'm going to be making my own maker space so videos like this are useful for helping me work out how to cram as much stuff I want into a small space to work with

@01:06 a pegboard in a supposed bedroom ? I see no problem with that. I have a comms rack with all my networking switches/routers etc in the cupboard of one of my 'bedrooms' ;)

Can you provide any details about the wire organizer you have, both the reels and the smaller ones? I'd love details on where you found the main "wire caddy" as well as which gauges you chose.

That was actually purchased all at once from harbor freight. It was just a variety set that had different wires of various gauges. But I also keep on hand 20 and 22 gauge.

The desk is an IKEA Jerker...they sadly stopped making them. They were from an era of CRTs so they’re really deep, which I love. The links area good idea and I’ll edit to add them when I can, and will keep that in mind for future videos. Thank you so much I’m a bit new still to KZfaq and the channels outpacing what I know :)

@@geektoolkit Thank you for the reply. That's really unfortunate about the desk, I'm a huge fan of the old CRT deep desks as well and they are getting hard to find. I will likely end up making one out of a countertop or something someday. I watched several of your videos and you're doing great!

I’ll have to check. I’ve upgraded to a 4K TCL TV though that’s been even better, I added a chrome cast to one port and ran a second input for the PC, then ran two more HDMI cables for pi’s and such.

Where did you find the inserts for the hellmer? I can't find them on ikea's site.

Ah good question! The trick there was we didn’t use ikea inserts, we measured them and then found inserts at the container store at the time (I believe last I checked they no longer had them). But basically find generic drawer inserts that get you close. I was shocked ikea doesn’t offer something as I find it so useful to have inserts in there!

Gah, I don't. They were from Ikea I believe, 6 drawer inserts, but this was a while back. If I had to do it today I'd measure and just look on amazon for drawer organizers and probably find something better. Those were tight at the start, but over time they expanded the drawers and eventually over time it wasn't a great fit
