Samsung the Frame Followup 2021 CES updates Tips and more!
8 months ago I released a video about Samsung "The Frame" TV. That was meant to not be a review so much as a "Hey I thought this tech was cool" style video. It blew up on the channel and generated a TON of great questions which I hadn't covered. So I'm going back to basically answer the questions, and also give an update of what I think of the TV 8 months in, and some regrets.
Some stuff from the video (Affiliate links to support the channel)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fintie 4mm Bluetooth keyboard (used in Remote PC demo..super slick) - amzn.to/39R6TxB
32" 2020 with bezel - amzn.to/3qGaSUE (This is the one that can rotate to portrait)
43" 2020 clearance deal WITH bezel - amzn.to/3o1R4cj
75" 2020 Frame (This was new for 2020!) - amzn.to/3611DX8
This Samsung The Frame TV video goes into details like HDMI 2.1, the 2019 vs. 2020. vs 2021 version (just announced at CES), and demos many of the remoting features I couldn't demo before due to only having one camera (Please note I'm still learning the new one, and as you can see struggled greatly with focus during filming...I'll get better!). I did however work on amplifying the audio and taking some of the other feedback from the past video.
This video goes in depth on in wall cable rating and why it's important, talks about how to get artwork onto the frame, shows actual performance of some of the tasks (getting pictures from a phone up there is demoed end to end). I also touch on some of the changes for the 2021 version which were announced at CES including portrait mode for the 43".
I did some work also to show how/where I get my artwork, how to get a phone/tablet/pc onto the frame, and show off the Remote Desktop and slideshow features which I wasn't even aware of last time! This TV continues to impress me and I'm still finding nuggets or features that I wasn't aware of.
Hopefully if you have a frame TV this shows you some tricks you can do that you may not have been aware of as well!

Thanks for this. One thing you did not bring up in either video was its interaction with other systems, like kodi on a raspberry pi, which is a little different to a remote pc. Conecting to a raspberry pi with librelec makes it fully integrated into the samsung tv, like any of the other apps. I find this very practical and useful since it complements the functions and restrictions that the tv has. You can not install random things on the tv. And using kodi, or another media center adds that functionality without havin to resort to working through a full blown pc experience, which is not as practical with the tv remote.

Good question! I have a gas fireplace but the design was intended to be able to mount a TV above it when the house was built. It even had HDMI and power run to the are behind where the TV mounts (which the frame can’t use due to the one cable...sigh)

"If you want it to look like a picture frame - then get this TV. If you want anything else, then get something else" I think you nailed it with that line. My partner and I went back and forth on whether or not to get this TV. Eventually we came to that sentiment -- we wanted a TV that looked great as NOT A TV most of the time and we were willing to accept a "lesser TV" given it's greatness as NOT a TV. Great review.

You will be fine hiding the box, mines hidden as well. The remote is RF based (I’ve heard Bluetooth but I can’t confirm that) so it can go through walls

Great video, thank you! A question I’ve not seen covered however - does the TV automatically cycle artwork after a certain period of time to avoid screen burn? Or will it allow for a single piece to be displayed for a month?
@geektoolkit

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a QLED screen so it doesn’t have the burn in issues that OLED have (I believe this is why we haven’t seen an LG version that I’m aware of). That being said it has a cycle that can be set from 10 mins to every 12 hours I believe. But in short, yea it cycles the artwork

@@geektoolkit I have to admit the smaller profile of the 2021 is even more of a reason to jump on this trend. Especially in our case where we plan to place some other similar art pieces around the TV to really hide the frame amongst everything. Im liking the screen sharing ability too. Thanks for the follow up. In your earlier video you said it needed to be fixed by a technician. What was the issue? Have you had any more issues or heard about others with issues?
@geektoolkit
@geektoolkit 3 жыл бұрын
The problem I had was the screen wouldn’t turn on. The Samsung logo would show though which was odd then nothing. It was a bad board behind the panel. He didn’t specify but they had to remove the back of the tv, the board, total replacement and reassemble. It immediately worked after that. I haven’t heard of that as a big problem. The main thing I hear through the forums has to do with the Sonos ARC soundbar. Some complain about viewing angles. I haven’t had that issue on mine and I don’t use a soundbar. I have two and a friend bought one after I raves about it and all three have been solid.

The 2021 should have 2020s HDMI2.2 and 120hz mode. I’d think you’d be set for as long as any other 2021 TV. Samsung just makes a range of panels and packages them different ways. This isn’t their highest end panels buts it’s among the higher end ones

We prewired for 7.1 in ceiling surround for a newly built home. Will it be compatible for this TV? And what brand do you think is decent but not pricey? Will probably buy regular 75" OLED instead of this. Nice review. Thanks!
@geektoolkit
@geektoolkit 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Regarding if it's compatable...the way the components would work for a 7.1 system would require a receiver to get audio to the speakers. You'd want HDMI 2.2 pass through, and then it doesn't matter what TV is on the other side, your audio will be split off by the receiver and just video will be passed through. Hope that helps...and congrats on a 7.1 wired house that's nice!

Hi Joe! first of all thanks for the review and all the information! I expect our 2020-65"-FRAME to be delivered tomorrow... :-p My question is: is there still a "need" to run a separate apple-tv box with it or are all the already integrated apps comfortable enough so a separate apple-tv box is no longer needed? You kind of answered or showed it already in the rev by demonstrating the short access time by choosing the direct button on the remote. But an apple-tv offers a little bit more than Netflix & Prime... Thanks in advance about an short estimation about that & kind greetz, Matthew

Thanks for the kind words and congrats! For me I've never owned an apple TV box, so it's hard for me to answer. As far as airplay, or using apps such as HBO MAX and such, the apple TV app on the frame gives me access to all of that. I can even airplay before launching the apple TV app. But if the Apple TV has further features I just don't have a baseline to compare it to. If you're able, and since it sounds like yours is almost there, please let us know when you get yours setup! I'd love to have an informed answer for the community. Hi Joe, as promised here's a short information about my experience with our new Samsung The FRAME 2020 65" and the usage of the included and additional available apps in comparison to an Apple-TV4-Box. Even though it is not completely the same in terms of comfort and clarity how the apps are organized and the amount of available apps it is definitely easy to run THE FRAME without using an additonal Apple-TV-Box. This is speaking for TV- and app-offers in Germany. The interface with an Apple iPhone 11 Pro (iOS 13.6.1) is perfect. AirPlay works excellent and seamless: it's a pleasure to mirror an iPhone-screen on Your BIG Frame-screen and watch personal photos, dia-shows or videos in hd-quality and use nearly any content of Your iPhone with all the apps. All this is possible in a split-screen or a full-screen mode. The Frame seems to me a perfect addition to my Apple-devices. Highly recommendable!

In the slideshow, does the brightness automatically adjust using the brightness sensor like in art mode?
@geektoolkit
@geektoolkit 3 жыл бұрын
no. In the slideshow, the tv is full on. The tv is meant to try to imitate a piece of art in art mode, so things are adjustable. In the slideshow, it's designed to show pictures to people around you, or have a live slideshow going. So it's full brightness, and doesn't have features like art mode (dimming, auto off, etc.). If you leave it be it'll eventually go into the screensaver, which is different than art mode (it's a samsung logo floating around). It would be nice if they designed it to run the artmode off a thumbdrive, fixing a number of issues, and give you more timing options, but that's not really what they designed it for. And I don't know if there are enough users to influence the design much.

I feel not enough credit is given to the one connect box it makes cable routing much easier and easy access to ports like usb or hdmi. I have multiple consoles etc.

I agree about the one connect…I think I covered it better in the first video but it’s tough to overstate how much it cleans up the look. I also love that it seems to auto detect things that are plugged in and has logos for it. For me the TV height is just the nature of the open floor plan we have and size of the room, when filming it it seems high but in use it’s really nice (I’m normally standing in the kitchen for that particular TV or across the room…my biggest issue is that I wish the wall was wider in that space so I could go larger!) I didn’t know how it compared to the q70, that’s good to know. I’ve always felt like it was a great TV and now have two of them. I look forward to see what they do with the 2022 model…

Any idea if Samsung is working on a 2023 model? We are considering a purchase of the 2022, but this being December makes me wonder if we should just sit tight for a few months to see what the new year brings.

I don't see why they wouldn't, and I think it's wise to wait if you can. CDS happens in January, and they usually announce there. That being said, they usually don't release till September...but sometimes having the knowlege of what enhancments they're going to do is worth it to know if you should wait for the newer model or just catch the inevitable sale.

I posted this comment to other video, so don't blame that I spam, just what to figure out if this affect me only. I have a lot of clouding issues on my 2021 55 inches, it's not just like gradient clouding which is normally does on all tv it is kind of areas of clouding, also I see vertical clouding lines on light scenes if I look tv at some angel, not sure if it happens to all frame tv or just mine but the not so amazing due these artefacts, colours, bright and contrast are beautiful but artefacts on light and dark scenes really annoying. At some angel it's a bit comfortable, but at some it's not so perfect. Also TV do scene more darkness at some cases. I've tried to find this auto handling of brightness option to switch it off, but no matter what I've tried the TV does auto brightness anyway. Not sure it's bug or there is no option to see static brightness

I base TV size on how far away you sit. I have a 65” that’s great from where I sit and a 55” that’s just as good because it’s in a smaller room. If you’re not too far from it it should be great. There are calculators online for distance vs tv size

As per the technical evaluation, the 2020 Frame beats the 2021 Frame except for physical attributes. Considering this, is 2020 a good deal?
@geektoolkit
@geektoolkit 3 жыл бұрын
I think the 2020 is a great deal because you'll be seeing sales on them (if you're not already). I thought someone said the 2021 had 6gigs internal storage vs. 500megs (and you have to use internal for the frame pictures, you can't load off USB). But I mean I'm rocking 2 of the 2019's and I"m happy. I just have a seperate TV for XBox/actual theater watching, and then the 2 frames give me aestheticly pleasing options for the bedroom/living room.

so, in other words, 4:25 you can't have aesthetics and an amazing movie theater experience... errr, LG GX/G1?
@geektoolkit
@geektoolkit 3 жыл бұрын
The Frame TV is designed to look like art when it’s not being used. So when I say aesthetic it’s about the feel of the room, not the look of the TV. There are plenty of TVs that look amazing, and LG OLED are there. But when the TV is turned off you have a “large black rectangle” in the room. That’s what the frame is designed for. That being said OLEDs arguably a better picture (deeper blacks at the expense of color space vs QLED) but OLED due to the nature of the tech can’t handle a stable picture without damage (this is why I believe we don’t see OLED frame competitors..the ones that have tried have had turnoff periods to prevent burnin). So that’s what I mean. That being said in my main theater I use an LG. But I also run my dynaframe software on it :)

@@geektoolkit first of all, thank you for the quick reply and the video 😊💪 I'll go on a hunch and assume you're not familiarized with the G Series, it has almost the same features as The Frame, it has LG Gallery Design, plus it's and OLED panel 😊 rich in features for gaming and movie theater experience (including Dolby Vision) Just not happy for the lack of a one-box-connector in any LG series 😟 * (this is why I believe we don’t see OLED frame competitors) -> LG G Series 😊👌 I'm currently looking for an upgrade as we moved to a new house, currently with LG55SK8500, and looking into a 75/77''

I have no “horse in the game” for which TV you buy…if the LG is right for you that’s awesome. My understanding is that the gallery mode on LGs turns the art off after five seconds. I got that comment on one of my videos and have read that in other videos. In the end I just want to make sure what you get is what you’re wanting. If the artwork is important to you then I’d research that aspect heavily. But as I’ve said in my videos, if you’re looking for picture quality first and foremost I wouldn’t even consider a Frame TV. For the price you’re paying for the art mode.

I have an LG TV, a Vizio, and 2 frames. For the OS, the Samsung has been the smoothest and most reliable of them for me. For apps, it really seems to depend on the developer. I use Hulu, Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime mosty, and of those Disney+ has the most issues (but this is also true on my LG). 3rd party apps by independants have all been pretty bad across the board (enough to make me consider making some apps to just try to raise the bar). Are you seeing other issues on a frame? Please let us know, and let us know what year, mines 2019 so perhaps newer ones have had issues. I myself didn't mention it because I'm not seeing it.

Ah yeah. I mention the bezel price in my last video. It caught me off guard but by buying a year earlier s I caught a sale so mine weren’t too bad. The TV is a premium priced TV all around, similar to the light bulb on a Tesla being $800. It’s obnoxious but I shopped for a deal and got mine on a killer sale. I haven’t had the app issues others have had…I use mine hardwired though because the wifi sucks on it (I think I mentioned that in my last video). I kinda wish I’d gotten a 32” because I heard they can rotate!

Oooh that sucks!!! Ok that info I didn’t know but that really sucks. The wifi was unusable on the one connect on my 65”, if it’s that bad on the 32” the app issues would make sense. And I don’t know how to fix that unless you try maybe setting a wifi repeater or mesh network up. I wonder if that’s what’s going on. Also the one connect wire being thick sucks unless it’s in wall rated. But that’s only useful if you can put it in the wall. Thanks for sharing this that’s good info I wasn’t aware of

6 GB limit in the 2021 model isn't many pictures or videos to display in Art mode for the price. Ill have to wait to see what the 2022 model has for memory. I solely wanted this for displaying my own image and video art! 2 TB memory would be much better and with batch upload, etc. processing vs. one file at a time menu funtionality they have (sb simple software coding fix). Better, please allow Art mode from external hard drive! Samsung is completely out of tune and out of touch with the market with this one; product is a brilliant fail!! With tiny 6 GB limit, seems like best suited to commercial retail applications of use such as restaurants as menu boards or for drygood retail displays. Gonna wait for a bit... i figure it will get there in a couple years/versions.

If you're trying to do a slideshow, you can load that off of a thumbdrive. the art portion of this is meant to be a rotating art gallery....and the fastest time it transfers is 10 mins. Do you really want to load 3000 photos onto your TV vs. curate them and have the 'best' showing all the time? I was upset at the limits at first till I thought about it...it's not a technical problem. And since Samsung makes memory, I don't believe it's a cost problem even...I think this was a design decision. That being said, if you really want a system that can do what you're saying, check out my dynaframe videos. That's why I made that..it allows for whatever you want, including animations to go onto a TV. I'm working on seeing if I can fully replicate what the frame does by changing inputs next ;)
