I'm bummed about it not coming to Kepler GPUs, but that video is awesome. Best explanation for MSAA I've ever seen. How (and if) MFAA works with moving edges (like literally any edge in a fast paced game) remains a mystery however...

Would it be effective to have sampled points at each corner of the pixel then use those 4 sampling points for AA? You have the same number of samples but get 4 samples per pixel. I'd love to have anybody knowledgeable on the topic chime in.

So my questions is... Are the samples taken based on your ordinary AA setting? Example1: You have 8x AA on. Do you now sample those 8 samples over time now? or does your 8x setting override? or work on top of MFAA? or in other words. Do you need normal AA on to make MFAA do what it does? Or is it completely independent. Question 2: Lets say that the answer is "The 8 samples are now being taken over time" How does that break down per-frame. 4 samples every other frame? 2 Samples over 4 frames each? I imagine it would have to be the first one? but then isnt this the same as 4x AA? Question 3: Does it have any kind of motion tracking or do objects in fast motion fall outside of MFAA since they arent residing in the same pixel space any more.

Yet... 10 years ago Xbox 360 was doing things that PC can't do. We've advanced way beyond that.
@usul573
@usul573 9 жыл бұрын
You might be surprised. On the Xbox 360, they can do MSAA, FXAA, SMAA, TXAA, and probably MLAA. MFAA is like a hybrid special form of TXAA and MSAA. The newer consoles could probably do a version of this. Actually, I think FXAA might be better. Nvidia brags that MFAA provides 4xMSAA quality at 2xMSAA performance, but sometimes FXAA has better performance than 2xMSAA and better quality than 4xMSAA. All that talk of FXAA causing blurriness or reducing texture quality or other stuff is complete bullshit as far as I can tell.
@erac6924
@erac6924 9 жыл бұрын
***** FXAA is a post process effect, which means that it is simply a filter run after the frame is rendered. This provides anti-aliasing to the entire scene, both geometry and textures, at a low performance cost but is simply using edge detection and blurring to simulate actual AA. Most of the other recent AA methods are based on this technique. MSAA basically renders the geometry at a higher resolution, while everything else is rendered at the native resolution. This cleans up jagged edges on objects but does not effect textures. In most cases that is okay, as textures can be taken care of with texture filtering. To get true full screen AA without FXAA artifacts (such as erroneous texture blurring) one must use SSAA (Super Sampling), which is rendering the entire scene at a higher resolution (geometry, textures, effects, everything) and then scaling it down. This has a 4x performance cost for 2x AA though.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 9 жыл бұрын
***** Of course FXAA attenuates texture detail, but it also attenuates shader aliasing, so this significant drawback has a significant advantage to go along with it. The major problem with FXAA is that it doesn't introduce any detail that is not present in the render otherwise, unlike MSAA which introduces extra coverage information, so it doesn't help resolve sub-pixel wide detail. This makes FXAA look good on almost every frame when looked at in isolation, but it tends to be a bit flickery and jumpy in motion, especially on nearly vertical and nearly horizontal lines and when the motion is perpendicular to the line. It also flickers point detail on e.g. stippled foliage, which is done so to remove depth resolution ambiguity, and the best way to make foliage look good is with mipmapped alpha-to-coverage in MSAA. Temporal scene-aware antialiasing, like MFAA and TXAA, is a reasonably good solution, and i do believe it will be introduced on consoles, but perhaps under a different name. MFAA looks like it's planned as a driver feature, but console games will need to implement their desired anti-aliasing schemes in their executable.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 9 жыл бұрын
e Rac Incorrect, SSAA has the 2x performance cost at 2x, with two samples per pixel - usually offset horizontally or diagonally.

+Chileno You have to enable msaa in game to atleast 2x for mfaa to work. If there is no aa, there is no mfaa. MFAA is a TYPE of msaa, so it needs to work with msaa to give you that performance.
@Dataacid
@Dataacid 8 жыл бұрын
+Sabi Teodosiev It doesn't work that way, MFAA splits the workload between multiple frames, you turn on MSAA then it's like telling it to run in MFAA mode, the AA method is the same, it's just split over time

I'll stick with my 32x CSAA
@sbk180tr
@sbk180tr 9 жыл бұрын
I prefer 16xQ CSAA + FXAA. No higher needed to be honest. Good action quality an photographic quality. 32xCSAA eats up way too much performance, and is only needed if you have something like a TV that has low DPI. But honestly, I'd prefer to stick with 4xSSAA + SMAA when I go low DPI. This is by all means made for performance increase. CSAA is getting old and shader based AAs are kinda making their point. Just like how TXAA was made for the highest quality (by all means, it cannot pass SSAA but everybody knows any other AA type exists because SSAA is stupidly slow), MFAA was made for highest performance. But nVidia changing their policy (secretly) about previous series supporting newest stuff is kinda sad. I can't honestly care enough because no money = 610M. That card can barely run games on 768p minimal graphical quality, let alone TXAA-SSAA, it can't even run FXAA on newest games. So it's kinda pointless to put this tech into latest cards. They needed to put this tech into low end cards to be honest. I can see my frames flying away with Bethesda games and their MSAAs... And no mod or external shader solves jaggies as good as MSAA does.
@sbk180tr
@sbk180tr 9 жыл бұрын
***** High MSAA and soft touch from a shader based AA aces it completely. With a small blurring artifact. It's photographical or scenery quality is not high enough, but in game is pretty much enough at the limit. FXAA does not really look good on any game by itself. It simply is made for performance and as a supportive shader. And you'd be surprised how many games does not support FXAA but full screen methods. I agree to the "best edge blending" part of TXAA, but I haven't seen ANY blurring on TXAA to be honest. Just on the low settings of it. Honestly (I think a guy said it here too) it gives a bit alias on the straight edges, and does nothing to transparent textures. CSAA isn't offering higher quality edge blending than MSAA. On equal multipliers, MSAA gives better quality but much lower performance. CSAA just provides better performance when it has equal samples with MSAA. But since they're not true samples but coverage samples, it still doesnt't give the equal quality, but lower. CSAA is simply good when it's on 16xQ or 32x. And that's just between the performance hit of 8x and 4x MSAA. I might as well say that CSAA without a shader based AA is not complete, and even with it, there's just too much blur. + Which year you at, 2006? HDR does support every kind of AA nowadays. SMAA is supported by EVERY game. It's an open code shader. SweetFX and ENB alike programs even make it easier for you to use it. SMAA is a brilliant thing, I suggest you to check it out. MFAA will be a lot different than SSAA. It'll be more like the MSAA quality. Only new tech that'll get close to SSAA is DSR. And that's basically nvidia coded Rendering Resolution Upscaling. I'm wondering what the high levels of MFAA will be like. Surely it'll hit the performance as much as a shader based aa does, but the quality can be astonishing.

***** and here comes another person who doesn't know about Anti Aliasing methods at all... Ever heard of SGSSAA or OGSSAA? Shader based AA methods will never be as good as a full screen sampling method, nor will be complete by itself. Even further, SMAA does not fix transparent textures. You need a + TrAA with SMAA which makes it worse than FXAA on Ultra settings.

Does MFAA impact TXAA in any way? If so, is the performance better or worse then?
@Chubzdoomer

+SirRFI I'm curious about MFAA vs TXAA as well. Now that we have so many different AA options, it's tough to distinguish which is truly king as far as image quality/performance.

+Chubzdoomer TXAA actually will be worse, and will also eat your performance. MFAA will look MUCH better (As its not one of those "approximate" AA) and will take almost no performance.

Fcking arogant nvidia...They sell you their graphics cards because of the exclusive feutures like physx and then each year they put exclusive feutures on yearly released "new" graphics cards and stop supporting their "old" ones,even though the old ones can handle new feutures... I have my gtx560ti and it had 3 year warannity and after 3 years of owning it with no problems,the graphics card starts overheating(never overcloacked it)won't play games that it used to play,without crashing and lagging and i keep having that problem where the Kernel drivers model stopped responding but was recovered,each time i play games like titanfall,bf4,while i run those games at 50-60fps with max settings,they start crashing for no reason.I had to find a fix my self,but it doesn't work for long..I had to download MSI afterburner and overcloack the voltage use of the graphics card in order for it to work properly... They are starting to become like EA,money whores,money seizing company over quality products.Hopefully i will get an AMD next year(if my gtx560ti lasts till then..)They will only stop when they start losing money and customers like me..

These features are hardware based, its impossible to give you the features through software updates, it's not about the raw horse power the card has. Imho I think these features are innovative and great for driving competition. Sure older generation hardware may not get them, but it is the after all the price of advancement, and who doesn't like better looking games? It's not expensive in comparison with other high end cards. It has roughly the same or even more performance than a 780ti or r9290x and costs around the same US$500 mark as the r9290x. Oh, it also uses 150 less watts under load, so cheaper bills :p. Btw, you don't overclock the voltage. You increase the voltage to increase stability. This lack of basic knowledge and the fact that you misspelled so many words and the fact that u can't max out bf4 using 560ti unless its running at super low resolution (guess what, I looked up actual benchmarks) tells me that you probably don't own a 560ti or any graphics card for that matter. P.S. I know u are a troll (just in case you haven't figured it out yet)
@a_slime.
@a_slime. 9 жыл бұрын
Upon re-reading, I spotted a few things... PhysX is exclusive because guess what, they developed the software and own it. AMD has their exclusive TressFX that they own. Both PhysX and TressFX can run on CPU's independent from what GPU is used. It is just not as good as on their respective GPU's, so it's not really exclusive. Increasing the voltage just makes your over heating problem worse. You are putting more watts (energy per second) in dammit. Kernel drivers exist but not Kernel drivers model. Lastly and I found this really funny, is that you called a company money whore when they make money from selling quality products... EA is referred to as 'money whores' because they sell crap products and do anti-consumer things to make money.

you need to check the temperatures, i got 3 years old evga gtx 560, the fan could stop any time if it rotates under 1500 rpm, so i need too tweak the speed from MSI afterburner and that what warranties are meant for, if the GPU warranted for 3 years, it's mean, the GPU are warranted for free of defects, 3 years since you bought it meanwhile don't blame Nvidia, blame who manufacturing those graphic card ex. "Can be enabled and disabled per game as desired", are you kidding me? I havent found ONE SINGLE game of my 149 Steam Games that i have that supports MFAA, so its so far useless af. Also if it only supports the newest of the newest games, its a performance waste, since i dont usually tend to put AA onto newly released games even on a GTX 970, since it just draws down on the FPS. Unless you make it compatible with some older games its practically useless.

it tells you specifically that it replaces MSAA, meaning you still set the game option to MSAA 2x or 4x and let the drivers convert it to MFAA. Only the 900 series though

@zen.mn.
@zen.mn. 9 жыл бұрын
But temporal AA done by the graphics card driver is only going to cause ghosting. Any game that implements temporal AA (like SMAA) has to do a bunch of work on cloth simulations and foliage to help with reprojection, otherwise you just get a blurry, ghosted mess. MFAA has no extra information from the game to help it combat ghosting.
