Gel with Mark

Жыл бұрын

In this video I will be expanding upon my previous video which highlighted charcoal image transfer and I will be combining this with the edition of colour added directly to the gel plate using brushes and finishing off the print with a corn flour resist technique to create a grungy background.
MATERIALS LIST.
Gel plate - I'm using the brand Gel Press.
Pure Charcoal
Tracing paper
Paint brushes
Brayer
Acrylic paint - I'm using Royal Talens Amsterdam standard series and
Pebeo Studio high viscosity acrylics.
Eraser or putty eraser
Corn flour/starch

Thanks again and thanks more for NOT having music … anywhere, anytime. As a former teacher, I would never play music while teaching - it’s distracting and often too loud and you can’t hear the tutorial. So, thanks!

Use discovered your first video and wanted more! The benefit of the image being reversed on your plate is that your print will be the ‘right way round. Direct of the plate techniques give a reverse. Love your techniques, and how clearly you explain them. I was convinced when I first saw gel plates that they would be very versatile, but first attempts were challenging! I never wanted to use a lot of bought stencils rather my own mark making. Thankfully there are other artists out there. Thankyou. Your piece is fantastic, and your narration of how you made your choices just spot on. I will have to rewatch the cornflower resist method, just got news of a terrible hurricane where I have friends.
@gelwithmark
@gelwithmark Жыл бұрын
Yes like you I’m not interested in the bought stencil side of things and I’m not interested in journaling either so my approach has always been in the directing of creating actual art prints rather than just making collage and backing paper stuff. I hope your friends are safe and well. Mine is a new channel so I’ll be trying to upload more content soon. Thanks for watching.

@@gelwithmark it will be a while before we know, I think. They are in Little Rock which has pretty much had a major disaster and all power lines seem to be out. I got back to see your corn flower resist, amazingbresult,mand the overall colours are fantastic. Clowns are rather spooky in general aren’t they? So,I think you caught that well… I particularly liked the way you got a clean pull at the end. I have been leaving things for longer time and till they felt drier, as My plate seems to do better that way, and feel drier paper leaves fewer tears. You have many layers of paint etc and still manage 5he pull, and basically you are using a similar technique to artists who painted on glass in the past, but there’s a greater chance what you do will survive because you have better materials. They were every bit as skilled as artists working in oils, but support was so fragile in every way. The back to front method also reminds me of the celluloid miniatures of the 19th century, every tiny highlight and detail painted first, I enjoy the fact that such techniques have morphed into contemporary expression! And of course that your original drawings can be reused and reworked if you want. Thanks for packing so much in…. And for sharing it all.

Thank you. I will say that since doing this video I’ve tried this technique quite a lot and I feel you can get better tonal values if you draw your image onto paper rather than tracing paper as you can build your layers of charcoal up more on the paper. Try both tracing paper and paper and see what you think.

I mainly use baby wipes but for more stubborn stains I put a good few drops of mineral oil onto my plate give it a good massage with my fingers then leave it a few minutes or so then wipe it off with a soft cloth and that generally does the trick, if I still have staining I just repeat the oil application and do it again. Hope that helps.

If you end up with some paint on the plate, is that because I haven't left it to dry long enough! I use Snowden printing paper which is 300gsm. This video was brilliant btw❤
@gelwithmark
@gelwithmark 11 ай бұрын
I think with small amounts of paint left on the plate, can be attributed to a few things, yes it might be that it just needed a touch longer to dry, it could also come down to in that particular area it may have been applied a bit thinner and actually dried a bit quicker before the paper went down, do you add a weight to the top after the paper is down? If not the paper may not have been fully in contact with those areas, is your paper slightly textured, that could have a slight impact too! I sometimes get a few small areas that seem to grab and hold onto the plate. If when I’m pulling and I notice in time, I can sometimes prevent the rip by simply changing the direction of the pull. Also I now pull the plate from the paper instead of the paper from the plate, that way I can see more quickly if I’m having parts sticking. Hope that helps.

Chinagraph pencils work fantastic as a resist. You can also apply it or oil-pastel to the reverse of your sheet, then do an embossed transfer on various surfaces.

Yes I’ve tried these techniques before that you mention. 👍🏻

Enjoyed this video. However, I had no idea why you painted the details and then painted over them with patches of different colours. Anyway, guess I need to find videos on gel printing for beginners! Looking forward to the colour harmony video. Thanks again, so fun to watch!

The way I work on the gel plate is in a reverse method because I like to just pull the whole image in one go, instead of pulling each individual layer so because of this I have to work backwards meaning the first marks that I put onto the gel plate ie the details, is what will be on the top of the stack of layers on the finished print so to speak. It may be easier to think of it like making a homemade pizza, normally you have the pizza base then you add the sauce then the cheese then the toppings right? But we are making something upside down, in a sense, so you would 1st put the toppings down on the backing tray then add the cheese then the sauce and finally the base. Does that make more sense in the mind?? Let me know

So then when you flip it back over the pizza is in the right layered order.

Love your work and all the ideas. Your commentary over the video is great - all useful and no waffle! Why did you add the layer of gel medium? I noticed you didn't in your first video.

I used the gel medium to pull the print as the layers had dried on the plate compared to the first video whereby I did the charcoal transfer then I just pulled with one layer of colour. You always need a wet layer to pull the print whether that is acrylic or medium.

you really have a wonderful technique ----thank you so much for sharing---so many possiblities!!! I'm not sure that I understand the use of cornstarch---is it for effect?????

Thanks. Yes the cornstarch causes the patchy grungy background as it resists in different areas of each colour layer added.

@@therealtiki well I would suggest just starting of simple with one or two layers and then building upon that once you have a basic understanding.

Thank you ! Amazing layered results. I am not an acrylic user. Haven’t tried to experiment with gouache and water colors yet. Is it an absolute to use acrylics? Would I need dampened paper to pick up?

Acrylics are the easiest medium to use but you can use gouache and watercolours, watercolour is definitely the hardest due to the water content which reacts to the plate s material. You can also use printing ink as well. Paper should be dry not dampened.
