A video for those of you who love texture and layers! The video is me just playing around with some new techniques and combining them with some old. Gel Plate really is the media most suited to 'play' I've ever come across!
A nod and thanks to Drew Steinbrecher whose technique I've incorporated here, adapted and blended with my own style. His work is great and KZfaq vid is linked below.

Hi Terry, a lovely comment, thank you. It's so hard judging where to pitch these videos - I'm mainly jst documenting my exploration but trying to make it accessible as there seems to be so many gel plate videos out there that are great but all seems to cover similar ground. A few people have mentioned doing a book - You never know!!! No chance anytime soon of online classes, I just don't know where I'd fit them in! Best of luck with your class in January - what will you start with as an activity?

Hello from Germany! I like your videos so much 😍 I've tried some techniques but still have problems with the transfer of newspaper-texts (using system 3 acrylics). Also I can't get lists china pencil in Germany. I've tried the transfer-technique with similar pencils but I can only get one good pull of my drawings, the second one is too slightly (is that the right word? Sorry for my English)
@Xenopticon
@Xenopticon 2 жыл бұрын
China markers are also known as grease pencils (at least, in the US). If you still can't find any, you might look for lithographic crayons, and experiment with those. They are a similar, greasy substance. Also, Markal oil-based markers or paint sticks, or oil pastels. However, these last options are likely to be more expensive than china markers/grease pencils.
@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hang in there with it!! Shiny papers with printed text should work - just use a very thing layer of acrylic and very light pressure. With the china pencils, you need to be light on ink and transfer pressure too. Try wax crayons or oil pastels, both work reliably.

@@castlequeen-inspirion For the first, I plotted them out by taking a pic of the print then drawing over photo using Procreate on iPad. Yeates this is a great piece, but what i cant seem to get a handle on is this: 'so when you put down the GREEN ARROW and then you peel it off, do you let all that layer dry completely and then put the white layer down and pull the print?' What I would love to see is a SLOW step by step if that is possible? You are super talented but i dont get the 'DO I DRY THE LAYER OF THE TRANSFERS PART COMPLETELY, THEN PUT THE WHITE LAST LAYER DOWN BEFORE YOU PULL THE PRINT?' Lastly, is the LAST WHITE LAYER BEFORE PULLING WET OR DRY?' I am just going crazy to learn to collage like you do with the Gelli plate. :-)
@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brade. Yep, the green arrow was dry before i inked up with white to pull all previous layers off. Sorry, poor editing and commentary didn't make this clear. The white layer is applied then, while wet, paper down to pull with. I will make a slower video soon on these techniques!!! I just worry if I go too slow people will just switch off!!!!

15 minutes should do it, just feel the back of the paper, if it is cold to touch then it is probably still wet : )

This is another excellent video--definitely in the top group on my list of art videos, /and/ of videos from your generally-excellent channel. Love that you used Drew Steinbrecher's subtractive dripping technique. I just learned about his channel slightly more recently than finding yours, and love the look that technique produces. Robyn McClendon has a longer video on a similar look--using more layers, I think--referencing Venetian Plaster and Fortuny: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdB6dsKrpqy4qWQ.html I really appreciated hearing about the relationship of your imagery to your memories, as well as seeing a bit more about how you incorporate repetition while breaking absolute regularity. And I can't wait for the upcoming subtractive baby-wipes video. Love the random richness, grunge, and detail of that texture. A couple of questions: 1a: Was the tissue paper you used in your printer wet-strength tissue? 1b: (And did you use laser or inkjet?) 2: Another viewer says that you only need to let a print dry on the plate until the receiving substrate is no longer cool to the touch. Have you ever done a side-by-side comparison of prints with the same layering, left to dry for different amounts of time? Is there really any significant difference (in terms of how thoroughly the paint lifts from the plate) between leaving a print overnight vs., say, a couple of hours? Finally, congratulations on your next 1,000 subs, as well! That happened incredibly quickly. So happy more people are benefiting from your channel. You have definitely upped the game for both printmaking videos, in general, and gel plate monoprinting & mixed media, in particular. Thanks again for what you do!

Hi there, cheers for the amazing detail and feedback, and questions, they always alert me to what I miss in commentary and I then keep in mind for future videos! The tissue paper is pretty cheap stuff, from a shop we have in UK called Hobbycraft - not sure if it is wet strength. Printer is a Canon inkjet. Drying times... I'm learning. Anything over 30 minutes seems to be totally dry and therefore everything pulls off. A minute or so and some parts stay down, which is actually a lovely thing if you want the broken texture. Inking some areas slightly blotchy and thicker coupled with a short drying time can create really lovely effects too. Planning to do a video on that but need a bit more experience to communicate some reliable advice!!!!! Cheers again, wonderful to have your support and interest.

@@yeatesmakes It seems so obvious, now you've said it, but I really like the "some areas slightly blotchy and thicker coupled with a short drying time" approach. I think it was the "thicker" and "drying time" parts that somehow triggered a feeling of clearer intuition about creating organic and grunge texturing. I feel like I now have an improved grasp of the mechanics underlying the results. As I say: obvious, yet not something I'd thought of in this same way, till you said it. Thanks again! Since you're experimenting with these things, anyway, it just occurred to me to ask: Could you possibly experiment with leaving some textured items (like your pieces of peeled corrugated board, or possibly some pieces of mesh bag, or random shapes of your favorite, masking tape) on the plate for different amounts of time, as well? I'd be interested to know what different effects you achieve in the amount of paint each removes, with different drying times.
