Gelli Printing with $1 Store Stencil Finds!

For those of you who have been following me for any period of time know, that some of my favorite art supplies are found at the Hardware store or Dollar Store...lol.
Today I'm sharing with you these fabulous stencils that I found in the kitchen and bath sections of the dollar store. I will be looking for more myself to add to what I'm sharing here...Enjoy!

Robyn I bought the same sink and bath mat you did at my dollar store,, I also bought some rubber kitchen drawer and shelf liner , I put paint on my gelli plate cut the size I want and put it on the plate and rub it and it looks like snake skin , I love what it does , I think you will too .I've really enjoyed watching you work girl , isn't this the most fun thing to do , I'll be watching you , much love from Texas .

Gelli Arts says this about using photo paper: "We have learned that glossy coated paper stock is not compatible with the Gelli® plate. It can immediately stick to the plate and not come off without damaging the plate's surface. DO NOT use any glossy papers (including glossy photo papers)." You mention using photo paper, but hopefully you didn't use the glossy coated paper. The distinction here should be made so folks don't ruin their gelli plates. :) Meanwhile I'm headed to the Dollar Tree tomorrow to check out sink mats and bath mats. Love this video! Inspiring!

Hi Robin. I got the sink mat with the squares. Later I got several more to cut & join the squares to make different designs. So far, I’ve made larger squares, joined 2 squares & staggered them to make a brick pattern and joined 3 squares to make an “L” shaped pattern. I have a few more ideas in mind. I’ll have to try them out on graph paper first. Thanks for the inspiration. Tere

lol What you said about buying other people's stencils. I don't buy stencils and that's exactly why. I don't want someone elses' creation as part of mine. I happen to be watching your video as I sit with a sketchbook and sharpie creating stencil designs from scratch to cut out of stencil film on my Design N Cut. I've done three already and am building up a collection - from my own drawings and doodles. I'm having a blast! You make good finds at the stores, too!

Yes! That's awesome that you are enjoying creating your images in stencils, it's a part of creating the art, right? I think it's time for artist to slow down and enjoy the overall process of creating their art, become more invested and own the images that they are creating. I call it ArtMythos: telling stories visually. I think it's important to be in control of your visual vocabulary. Thanks so much for watching my video and commenting :)

I have looked in about fifty Dollar Trees for that wonderful bath mat and it is no longer in stock any where. Oh, how I want one! If you ever see this anywhere else, please let me know. These are amazing prints! LOVE them!

Good info. Thanks for sharing. I have a lot of Golden high flow acrylics that I don't use much. Do you think they would work on the Gelli prints? I have plenty of other paints too.

It's the Kodak Inkjet Photo Letter Paper, but any brand of this paper will work! Thanks :)

Somehow I stumbled onto this video....I almost didn't watch, because I guess I am just not very patient, and at first you sort of just talked. I am so glad I stuck around. It was when you so quickly and forcefully wrote the black letters on one of the prints.....!! WOW! That was it. I not only stuck around...I am hooked. I think you are fantastic and fabulous and I am now going through every one of your videos. I don't think I will ever be able to watch someone do pale pink bunnies and pink and white checks again. Nope, I am firmly in your camp! I am so glad I told myself to be patient.....

This is cool! Hmmm. I tried using stencils with the gelli but I was using thicker watercolor paper and the stencils didn't work out great. Maybe the thicker stiffer paper is why, and I should try a lightweight paper that can be pressed down more into the stencil.

Yes definitely change to a thinner more flexible and absorbent paper for stencils, I use thicker watercolor paper when I'm puling paint from the plate not using stencils or if I'm using stencils I pull the ghost prints on thicker papers...Thanks for watching!

It's in the rice paper family, generally used as calligraphy paper, I put a reference link below the video to the exact paper I use. Thanks again hanging out with me :)

I used the Kodak inkjet letter paper in this video but truthfully any brand works beautifully....and a tip: I look for it at the thrift store like Goodwill etc. there always seem to be packs there for a dollar or two, which is quite a bit less than buying it new :)

I’ve read that you should never use photo paper on a gelli plate because it will stick. Were you using the glossy kind? (I’m asking because I have a lot of it from the op shop!)

Great finds! I always check out the kitchen ware and hardware sections of the stores, looking for things to use on my gel plate. Robyn did you make your own gelli plate ? I watched someone on KZfaq making one , I'm going to try it , the reason I'm asking is because your big one moves around so much and it looks like it's hard , just wondering .

Hi Linda all of my plates are Gelli Arts and in fact I’ve never made a plate though I tell myself I should try! I have worked on home made plates before I had a subscriber send me one I gave interesting effects and work best if they stay refrigerated between uses. Good luck pls share your results! 😍

I really like your aesthetic and very inspiring vids. Wish you could avoid all that sniffing but I understand you have allergies. The sniffing is very distracting and unfortunate.
