I cut Cabochons all the time with opted stones! I've never faceted them! But that sure is Beautiful work!

I acquired a scarab ring circa 1920s made from a piece of dark blue lapis. The scarab is very detailed with beautiful angles. Can you tell me how the lapis was carved? And where might the piece of lapis come from?

Most Lapis comes from Afghanistan and has since antiquity. The Ancient Egyptians imported Lapis from some of the same mines in Afghanistan that still exist today. If you see a photo of King Tut's Sarcophagus, you will see it is made of Gold and Lapis. At to how it was carved. No, I can't tell you much about the methods used in the 20''s. Today some carvers use burrs that can be purchased, or made by yourself to cut/carve Lapis...but again, I don't have any expertise in that area.

I have seen a kitchen worktop made out of lapis but not faceted before .

Yes, normally Lapis would be made into a cabochon and not faceted. However, it is what the customer wanted...and the customer was very pleased with the result.

Interesting but I don't think I would ever want to cut lapis. But I do like that cushion cut. Might give that a try on some alexandrite colored synthetic corundum. Will you be going to Tucson this year? I've signed up for the USFG rough tour. Can't wait!

Should look great on Alexandrite colored Corundum. Yes, I will be going to Tucson. You will enjoy Scott's tour of rough dealers. Bring your walking shoes :-)
