Mike has this large piece of lemon quartz that he received as a gift during the Annual Faceting Symposium in Franklin, NC more than two years ago. What ever should he do with it? Watch as award-winning gem cutter, Michael Sackos, facets this piece of quartz into the Portuguese Cushion Triangle II design by Ernie Hawes. Because this rough was so large, in this video, Mike also goes over the process of dopping heftier sized gems and using a transfer fixture.

I have cut this design 3 times, 2 in yellow quartz, and 1 in amethyst. Awesome design for the practice!. but now, one of the members of my Guild wants me to help design a 1.6 Oval Portuguese based on Mr.Hawes 1.4 Oval Portuguese , but for quartz on a 96 index..HAHAHAHA! Still working on it.

Cool! When you get the design done, let me know! Glad you are using a 96 index...in my opinion, it's more work then it is worth to switch index gears just for one design and then switch back. Best of luck!!!!

Nice one. I just started Faceting. I am Faceting rose quartz and some orange pink beryl or morganite I got from a mine. It’s fun but time consuming lol 😊

Yes, I figured you would start with the rough you picked up at the 'mine' in Georgia. Cutting goes faster as you learn more. What machine are you using? Best of luck.

@@Algoldprospecting Best of luck with your new machine. Thank you for the offer, but I have all the rough I need...and more. I would recommend you joining a rock hound group (Lapidary Club, Gem Cutting Club, etc.) in your area and donate sone rough to them...they always seem to be in need,

Beautiful, I love to see large gems cut. What country did the lemon quartz come from? Was it treated, heated, or all natural?
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 9 ай бұрын
Thank you. As I mentioned in the video, the lemon quartz was gifted to me from a fellow cutter, so I don't know the details of the stone that you are asking, but you can contact Paul on facebook and ask for more details on his rough..

Terrific gem and thanks for the video - as always I learn something new from each one! Did you cut according to the instructions or did you modify the steps? It looks like your preform (at around 15:12 ) only has 3 of the 5 girdle facets cut - G1 and G3 I believe?
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 9 ай бұрын
I followed Ernie's instructions and did not modify them for this gemstone as Ernie's instructions are for quartz. Yes, when preforming, I often only cut some rows/tiers. Some rows have very small facets and it would make no sense to cut these small facets with a 100 grit lap (for example), so I skip some rows/tiers until I get to finer laps or prepolish.

Where can I learn to face cutting gemstones . Is any place , website or even a person teaching ? I was wondering if Facetron or Ultratec have courses. Thank you for your excellent instruction Sir !

There are many places to learn. Boyd Foxx is offering training on the web, youi can find him on Facebook. There is a list of instructors in the USA on the United States Faceting Guild's newsletter, just go to the website and look at the last page of a recent newsletter for a list. I do not believe Ultratec or Facetron offer training, but you can ask them yourself, they are easy to contact.

Is the dop diameter generally 1/4”?
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 8 ай бұрын
No. Inches is a measure in the USA, but many countries (hello Australia) have created a number of excellent faceting machines over the years and would not likely have used inches for the diameter of a dop. So it depends on the machine...and in some cases, different versions of the same machine have changes the diameter of the dop. But from all the dops and machines I have seen, in person and online, it appears that the diameter is around the equivalent of 1/4 inch.

Sir, I have just started this job, I am a young stone cutter. I'm having a lot of trouble buying rough material. I want to buy synthetic stones. Is there a site or seller you would recommend? Is there a seller who sells these in their natural form?

Tsm gems Is a reputable place. Prices are a touch high but they're still realistic. Or if you can make it out to the Tucson gem and mineral show then you can find anything you'd ever want.
