Loved and revered for thousands of years in China and and other traditional societies of antiquity, jade is a mysterious and some say magical thing. What is it tho? In this episode we'll clear up the mess and give you a platform so you can trade in jade knowledgeably.
A HUGE thank you to those of you who supported with additional footage of your exceptional jades~!
Miki Qiu 裘石头 ~ 多谢分享这么美好的缅甸翡翠
B E Brenes Jiménez and Yax Tun Minerals for sharing your collection of exquisite Guatemalan Jade/Feicui. It is a fantastic eye-opener to see another exceptional origin of Feicui. Thank you also to Jade's BEB Studio for sharing your inspired carvings using Guatemalan Jade.

Wow Peter. I've gone to a dozen Chinese dealers who sold Jade and asked for info on what to look for, none of them had this much info. Often it felt like they were unwilling to share the secrets of the stone, and more than once they digressed into the ancient, mythical properties. As a result, I haven't focused on Jade as it just seemed nebulous. Kind of the same story with pearls. Anyway...thanks for sharing, so refreshing to finally have a better understanding.

Glad to play my part, Bill~ I hear you and totally agree - too many people try to hide their own ignorance by saying something along the lines of: "you just dont get it." Such unqualified statements and insinuations just make me want to hit people with sticks.

Great video Peter. Quite complicated but I understand Jade a little more now thanks to you. I remember as a kid, going to a museum in Beijing and looking at some really intricate Jade carvings that were absolutely beautiful. Many of them had been returned to China by the Japanese government as they were of huge historical importance to the Chinese. I couldn’t help marvel at the intricacy of the carvings and the Presteigne condition they were in. Thank you for another great video.

Absolutely ~ the design theory that the Chinese operate under for carving and casting should leave anyone gobsmacked. Even some of the bronzes that they were making back when folk were still hitting eachother with clubs... astoundingly complex. Love it. Cheers Rog~

Whoaa, I thought I knew a bit about jade since I was told about it when little, but I knew nothing at all. Thanks for sharing the tips! As a interesting titbit, amongst the Chinese (that you might have already heard since your Chinese is very good), there's local myths that say jade protects you. Jade bangles will break in a bad fall instead of your bones and let you walk away unscathed. I wonder if jade's durability is to attribute to that - maybe it absorbs the shock and shatters, cushioning the person's arm from the fall. In any case it no doubt contributes to the presence of many many bangles we see being sold on the streets these days.
@GemologyforSchmucks

My pleasure to share ~ I'd heard that bangles broke in our stead, and I think that is fascinating. What I find super interesting is the idea of having a pair of bangles cut from the same stone and those two have a link too. ALSO ~ you don't find any dudes wearing jade bangles. Lots of pendants and occasionally the "扳指" or archery thumbrings, but never the bangles. I feel like this is a thing I could dig into for a decade and maybe not get to the bottom of. #cheers to an exciting decade ahead!~ Thanks for the comment.

I have recovered Nephrite Jade in Northern CA from the fabled Chan Jade Mine, it is a boulder that was not in a stream for long, and in Southern Oregon I found Jadeite, both green and Purple/blue. those boulders are slightly smaller, but still hundreds of pounds. And numerous pieces the size of soccer balls. I need to find a market.

Great video and description but I would like to hear your view on serpentinite jade not Serpentine. I have been hunting Jade now for a number of years and I've noticed the hillsides that has been pushed up from below by plates shifting there's always a pattern to it that is when a closed system volcano is producing Jade it starts off by making a nephrite boulder out of it it takes a host Rock mixes it with Serpentine and that's what shows up first on the hillside in a column and then when the volcano becomes more active you can see how the weather must be swirling and it twists in their fright and crushes it which I have heard is called the sir Penton ization process needed to form Jake and I can see how it crushes it and it makes it funnier drained and stronger like wringing out a rag it makes everything Tighter and closer together but some people have decided that serpentinite isn't Jade at all because it isn't nephrite don't you think it's ridiculous personally because it was nephrite just a minute ago until it started twisting and turning and that seems to be the only difference it's got the twist in it plus it's gotten finer-grained and stronger because of it but I wish to hear your views on the subject that you have one

Metamorphic processes are fascinating and deeply complex. I won't pretend to be an expert on geology, so for this particular topic i'll refer you to a video/webinar that GIA put out last year or so on the formation of Jadeite that I thought was super rich (and also dense) There is some discussion about serpentinite (antigorite) here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ma-Cd7SApr2shqs.html

Hi Peter! Big fan of jade. I have some Pounamu that I wear every day. While shopping for that I came across some black jade from Australia and Canada. What's the story with that? Is it nephrite as well?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 3 жыл бұрын
Hallo Michael~ Canada (particularly the western coast) has a long history with nephrite jade, often a deep green, and could be something like black. Australia, i've not heard anything specifically, so i'll reserve comments until I hear more stories and/or get to see more material from Down Under. There's so many nations and quite a few thousand civilized years of history, so it's hard to know everything ;) Thanks for reaching out

What kind of wax exactly is used to coat jadeite and is it possible to remove the coating at home?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi ~ Each jade manufacturer may use a different product, so I can't say categorically what kind of wax. The wax does however come off quite easily with general polishing, though it's not recommended. Waxing is widely accepted as its not a permanent alteration to the jade itself.

It may sound a bit odd but... I tend to think of treated (or even dyed) Jade like a wounded animal. If you take it in, love it, nurture it, then it will take on your kindness and love you back. Wear your Jade with much pride, treated or not. I own many of both.

I find it difficult to gauge the market for nephrite, and most online sources I’ve consulted have been unhelpful since almost all are mostly concerned with jadeite and only mention nephrite in passing, if at all. I have seen pounamu pendants of various sizes sold directly by vendors from Ngāi Tahu (the main Māori tribe of New Zealand’s South Island responsible for managing the resource) that typically start at a few hundred US dollars, but I’ve also seen similar sized pendants sold by Jade Mine Canada sold for well below 100 US dollars. I understand that the significance of the material in Māori culture and the rigorous authentication and licensing program run by Ngāi Tahu to guarantee the stone’s source from New Zealand may influence the higher price, but it’s hard to develop a frame of reference from such drastically different price tags. Do you have any advice on this?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 2 жыл бұрын
With nephrite, there is such a large supply for green that it has largely become a trinket commodity. I love it, but it just isn't rare. Most nephrite of a high value is because it is historical (such and such emperor's imperial seal) or because it is carved by some master sculptor. The material itself for nephrite is not distinguishable on its own to not have a "value added" feature at this point in history, from my read on the situation. That said, there is always room for someone to educate and show a point of differentiation and that can change the value point. In the case with New Zealand "greenstone/ pounamu" etc, the tribal angle is their value added approach. I'm not saying that to demean anyone, simply to say, its not because of the mineral that it has the price tag it has, but because it's perceived as coming from that group of indigenous persons that folks see the value in the object.
@TheKalihiMan
@TheKalihiMan 2 жыл бұрын
@@GemologyforSchmucks Thanks for the reply. I was mostly concerned that this may be a situation similar to jadeite where an exceptionally low price may be too good to be true, but it sounds like nephrite’s availability is adequate enough to where perceived scarcity won’t have too much influence.

It's always a struggle to know exactly how fast to talk when you're talking at a camera and you don't get that live audience feedback. It's amazing what you learn from people by watching their body language. When I was teaching ESL abroad, it usually took a few classes to get the right speed for that specific class. Too slow and people fall asleep, too fast and they get lost. I appreciate your taking the time to contact me and let me know your thoughts.
