Well, I’m an amateur… luckily I’m at home where I appear to be the … master beginner! About the only thing I get right is “both eyes open”, the loupe itself is a good one but old & I like the powerful cheepies since I’m no “pro-in-the-know”, I enjoy the amazing features seen within any polished gem, created over time, deep underground. Wearing expensive gems for status is like wearing cash & they look like glass or fancy glittery plastic to most of us anyway. A plain Ag/Au/Pt ring is my safer choice

It is best to use a jewelry loupe and definitely a Chelsea filter! Although, for example, Brazilian emeralds do not respond to the Chelsea filter.

Dear Peter, I own a fake emerald which is one thin layer of emerald green epoxy resin that can be found on the table side and transparent epoxy resin on the culet side of the stone. It is in a sterling silver ring of mine. This is the new craze from China. You have to inspect the jewelry before buying it. Greetings and best wishes from Budapest Hungary.

Okay, question: there is a TON of gems out there that appear octagon but are referred to as emerald cut. Even GIA references emerald cut in a shape that appears octagon. Is there a difference there or is it just an octagon replaced with the term of emerald for common understanding?

I'm not sure if I understood correctly, but I do think I have a couple of cats eye green nephrite beads - in a beads necklace which came with an original price $3850 and a Chinese certificate. (Of course, I didn't pay that much!) I can see they are genuine nephrite. Could it be really a valuable piece?

Is it possible that aquamarine look like lavender/violet and grayish blue?
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
If I saw greyish blue i'd be suspicious that it was irradiated. There is a fair amount of that material on the market, commonly called Maxixe. The colour is unstable and likely to fade (and quickly) in the presence of strong light.

There's no jeweler or gemologist (even certified gemologist) that I can trust here honestly. They tell lies(or say nothing) and try to buy cheap.

Do you have a video on how to wear those cheap chinese loupes with the metal headband? Mine didn't come with instructions & I don't want to look like a schmuck while wearing em. Thanks! 🙂
@DeepNorthAdventuresАй бұрын
So would it just be a different oil to be able to get the RI reading for, say, diamond? If yes. Do you happen to know of what type of oil that would be? I do know that a diamond/ gem tester would likely be the go to for that type of thing but I am curious just for the sake of knowing.

Hi guys, can anyone recommend me a good digital gem microscope? I want to take shots of the gems and upload them to my PC. Thank you and have a nice day everyone!
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
Many of the popular brands of gem microscopes (leica, olympus, motic, etc) have some models with built in cameras, or my preference is a trinocular model that you can attach a separate camera to. Do be aware that many trinocular models will require some sort of adapter if you are using a DSLR camera.

Great advice! How to decide for each stone what market to sell to? Collectors vs jewelers? What would you base your criteria on? Just market trends va individual taste or there is some sort of common sense?
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
I think "follow the money" is the real common sense here. If a collector offers a better price for my stone, I'd rather sell to them. If a jeweller is willing to buy more stones for an over all higher ticket/ faster selling cycle, then I prefer to sell to them. This is definitely one of those boots on the ground parts of business where you have to form relationships and find out what flows best.
@gginparАй бұрын
@@GemologyforSchmucks thanks for the answer. I have always been interested in this industry and tried to get into diamonds about a decade ago (in London) but it resulted impossible because of people only buying and selling to trusted sources, family ties etc... looks like trends are positive for colored gemstones... but again network is everything
