I would give my entire tech collection to have a sample of these specimens and i would give my left leg to have jewelry of the pristine faceted. Im a stem major and as much as i love natural gems i will NEVER understand why people look down on synthetic gems, especially the unearthly rarity of the gems on display here

Bruh 90% of so called natural diamonds today are lab made. Most jewelers and some gemstone dealers are full of sht!

Same here. A lot of jewellers and dealers are so snobby when it comes to gemstones but I much prefer these and other lab grown gems. They're better for everyone and you don't need to dig up the earth for them.

I'm a goldsmith, and I absolutely love these stones. Some jewelers look down on lab grown material, because they view it as cheap. I even did once too... But this is not the case. These gemstones are not only astonishingly beautiful. But they are a triumph to what we have all achieved together as a civilization! Some of the smartest people of the time created these crystals for their world changing inventions. From machines that can show you cancer inside someone, to gigantic arrays that unlock the very secrets of the universe. Today, we have implemented the crazy advanced materials used for these inventions so much, that we can afford to just facet them and make them into jewelry. Maybe the allure of having an earth created stone is still there. But now, we have the allure of wearing actual technology as jewelry too, and I am 100% all for it.

IMHO, it comes back to ethics. If I am incorrect in my assessment may I be open to being educated otherwise, but from what i know i would rather have a lab gorwn diamond than a ‘blood’ one.

I was friends with Denis Durham before he died - the world champion gemstone cutter. He absolutely convinced me that synthetic was vastly superior because the cutter can use as MUCH material removal as they need to get the optically perfect stone, you cant do that with natural as you are reducing the weight and therefore the value. Some of his stones were beyond belief - I used to have a collection but sadly I fell on hard times and had to sell them. But even as synthetic sapphire, I got £400 to £1000 each for them as the buyer was prepared to pay for the astonishing cut.

Just stop with the whole blood diamonds act. Just say you cant afford one and no one will care. The fact you believe blood diamonds and lab diamonds don't come from the same source is hilarious. Do you really think a blood diamond manufacturer doesn't grow cheap diamonds for you to buy? They do. Plus, buying ethical diamonds are the easiest thing you can do. Especiallyif you can afford a certification of origin. @archervine8064

@@jcm2789 depends on who you ask. When you get to things like perfect clarity between natural vs lab grown it's almost splitting hairs. They're rocks and not meant to be perfect 👍

I got a few beautiful pieces of GAGG. My original piece got lost in the mail, but they gave me a larger piece with four small pieces for free! I would 100% recommend turtles hoard to anyone looking for a unique gemstone.

Extremely interesting. This show jogged young childhood memory for me. My father and grandfather (both machinists) had built some lapidary equipment, and would experiment with cutting stones. I remember shelves full of opals in water-filled baby food jars. They met up with a man named Hank Andre, who gave them some laser ruby in cylinder form to practice cutting. Fast forward nearly 50 years and I'm sitting her watching this very fascinating show. You guys keep saying not for jewelry - but I know that my father cut and faceted many large stones that were set into jewelry. Thanks for the memory

She's not lying on the Florescent for this thing. You have to understand without that gem, the amount of light produced from the UV bulb alone would be pratically nothing, it's almost like creating more energy than what's being put into it in a visual since.

7:42 Fun Fact: this technique is also used in the production of microchips to make ultra pure and pristine Silicon crystal that is then cut to thin "wafers" and of which it will be treated and coated with the necessary materials and after, the designs of the chip will then be etched in to the silicon with a super precise UV Laser projector

What’s crazy is how these same gemstones are used in so many different applications. I personally own a ruby, sapphire, aluminum nitride, and dimondium/monocrystalline SiC crucibles.

I am a sucker for Corundum, and even though I'm not a pink lover, The Laser Ruby seems to appeal to me the most, with the Moissanite coming in a very close second, the color of the Moissanite is very appealing, but also, the scintillating crystal would be very cool to have on a ring and go to a bar or rave with black lights on everywhere, the women would come flocking to me! Ha Ha!

If you are into mechanical watches, you see those a lot. Watch "ruby" bearings are synthetic crystals with exactly that shade of pink

The gallium gadolinium garnet is used for solid state neutron detectors, the afterglow is actually a reason they have not used them much. ❤

The green yellow crystals are cerium doped they used the luticium in place of some yttrium as it makes it have a built in calibration. They are used in CT and PET scanners. Those crystals are geat for building DIY diode based radiation sensors, a large faceted one with the table facing the photodiode works the best. ❤

I think the stereotype originally comes from uranium glass which has a similar green glow (though not as bright).

I've been collecting lab grown gem crystals for twenty years. I have some amazing crystals from the former Soviet Union, as well as superb crystals of ruby and sapphire grown by John Chatham (not Tom) himself.
