Something a little different as we take this MK III Range Rover L322 for an off road test at Lithgow. Through the Wombat Holes at the Powerlines and then down Nine Mile Steps to Ali Babas Cave and back up.
It's interesting to see a standard modern 4wd Land Rover Range Rover attempt this sort of terrain. We have seen many 4x4's both standard and modified struggle on these tracks. Our main worry was clearance and we took care not to damage the front or rear bars and smash in the sills as it climbed and dropped off the rock steps.
Support us by simply commenting. We do enjoy reading them and getting feedback. Give us a thumbs up or down. Share the video. Doing that really helps the channel and we appreciate your time and hope you continue to enjoy our trips with us.

That's what do many fail to appreciate when comparing the range rover to other vehicles, it'll go anywhere off-road, cruise in perfect comfort, give gtis a run for their money and doesn't look out of place in any social setting. Really is a unicorn vehicle

On road tyres, too! It's scrabbling all over the place, however. It looks like it has an electronic diff lock, where the computer brakes on the wheel which loses traction. Saves a lot of money on expensive mechanicals, makes the car lighter, but does have limitations. Seems to work fine enough, I must admit that I am surprised! It can then be returned to the missus, right in time for Monday's shopping. Haha ;-)

The 322 doing what it does best - and naked too! Just shows that you don't need to deck a car out like a Camel Trophy. _No_ oversized tyres, _no_ oil rig bumper with obligatory winch, _no_ chunky tyres, _no_ massive spotlights, _no_ stickers or decals plastered everywhere, and a guy in the driving seat who knows what he's doing with heaps of mechanical sympathy. No revving the nuts off the car and ''going for it'' like so many other 4x4 people we see on KZfaq. Nicely done!

Bought a tuned 08 TDV8 3.6l EGR and PDF delete, exhaust done, it flies, drives awesome, is pretty much the best riding car I’ve ever had which includes a few Euro’s the best being an XJR Jag. Anyway, bought the L322 to tow a 2.5t boat I was yet to buy... bought the boat in Pt Lincoln so drove from Sydney, hooked the boat up and as soon as I hit it up a bit straight into limp mode, off and on again then off and as long as I went easy it was ok for a few hundred klm’s so persevered with it, it went into limp mode about 20 times and finally gave up just before Cobar, towed it in and they couldn’t fix it so towed it to Dubbo, they put a scan tool on it (it shows every imaginable fault) but couldn’t fix but got it going as before (a new correct battery helped) Left the boat at Cobar (it’s now in Parkes, a mate rescued it, it’s a 32’ folding trimaran, the biggest you can trailer without a permit) Got the Rangie home with only one limp mode, dumped the fuel in the filter and it refused to start again, put a new in tank fuel pump in which the scans mainly pointed to and still no go: so far I’m out just over $4k, it’s booked in next week at Gemstar, I’m expecting at least $6,000 and that’s with warranty. I bought it ($27k) coz I wanted a V8 diesel but couldn’t afford a 4.5l Toyota with under 400,000klm on it or wanted a Chev or Ford yank pick up, if I wasn’t retired I’d keep it and throw money at it or build it up with a Cummins: shame coz they’re such a nice vehicle to drive... The towie at Cobar reckons Land Rover are worse than Jeep, he tows more of them and you don’t see them out west at all (all come from the city) Where I live you’ll see a dozen new Rangies every hour, if not more, the trick is to buy new and sell before 120,000 klm. They reckon Jeep is the most unreliable vehicle and Ford’s PowerStroke the worst diesel ever made. For sale 2008 Range Rover Vogue Luxury.

Astounding vehicle! I was the first commercial 4WD tour operator in Australia to run one of these L322's back 2002 with the TD6 diesel engine. 100% international visitors to Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Hill End and Barrington Tops. Reliability? Never an issue when properly maintained and I earned A$1200/couple per day. That level of service was simply not possible with any Japanese 4WD. I recently sold my 05 4.4 litre L322, sight unseen for double market value so there is still market for this much under-rated 4WD if well maintained and I miss it already...

Thanks man 🍻 No problems other than noise now and then. I did set the hdc a little faster so it wouldnt cut in as often so that might of helped keep temps down.

this is what the new defender is based on All that tech is upgraded in the new defender. But it was clear from this generation that it already works like a charm. Any damage to those sensors though, and it's game over.

Nope, RR Sport shares the frame with Disco. This RR is a unibody vehicle

As @@romantkachuk168 mentioned you are thinking of the Range Rover Sport L320 which shares the frame with the Disco 4, the full size Range Rover L322 in the video is vastly different.

Sweet as man!! Welcome to my world! I find in the Grand Vitara that I need to be fairly fluid with it - maintaining a bit of momentum to let the traction control be most effective (though it looks like the LR control is a bit more advanced than the ol Zook...). Gotta watch those sills though! So what's the plans? Going to go all Black Betty on it?

Black Betty has set the bar really high. Hopefully sliders and tyres then go from there. Yes i understand about traction control and the need for momentum and staying on the gas, but without lift, sliders etc on this terrain would most certainly end in damage. I tried using TC in a slower manner and it seemed to work. There is always room for improvement and with a bit more seat time i think i can get it to work even better in this same slow style.

@@lror Didn't it though?! I loved watching it go places and show how serious the RR could be! Yeah, totally understand being gentle with it. I tore off a sill cover and gave the transfer cross member gravel rash first time out in the GV. I was rather unimpressed with myself :( Even just a modest 40mm lift made such a huge difference! Will be great to watch the evolution.

@DAVID FORBES yeah they're a pretty decent car and surprisingly capable. Definitely go an auto cos it'll work better with the traction control, the driveability will be better (the gearing in the manual is a bit weird in mine) and you'll be able to run 245 75R16s with no probs. Lift and bash plates are essential. Not to spew too much unsolicited advice... 😁

The Range Rover Vogue is a luxury SUV, imagine the 4x4 version. And that car is about 12 years old.
