Bingo, this was true when I was a kid in the ‘90s, it’s true for my kids now, and I’m sure it’ll be true for my future grandkids (assuming any of my kids have kids). The difference is that we didn’t have influencers, we had commercials, ads in magazines, and billboards telling us what we should want.

@mykoniichistorychannel No, but I know when to apply common sense and my common sense tells me her kids, raised by a doctor and a lawyer/tv personality, who attend elite, ivy league schools aren't being forced to use Vaseline and Old Spice much less being provided with such. Listen, Sunny boasts about her children being not only smart and intelligent but decent, kind-hearted human beings. I doubt if they asked their parents for name brand items, they're being told no or being provided with generic, basic quality goods.

Marketers and influencers working with marketers know how to get you to want and buy. That's their job. I used to work in corporate retail doing fashion shows. I got sucked in. I wanted everything. These companies know how to work you, to make you feel better about yourself when you buy their products. Until I realized that I define me. I don't need labels to define who I am or my worth. Now, when I see people with lots of designer brands, I see someone who really needs to feel valued and acceptance. The people who don't need brands are the secure ones.

Children have been asking for expensive things as long as commerce has been a thing. The difference today is the parents. When I wanted a pair of Calvin Klein jeans back in the 80’s my mother made me a proposal. Extra chores for extra allowance OR I could wait until Christmas or my birthday. AND it was also contingent on my school grades. I don’t really know what is going on in other people’s homes, but when I see a seventeen year old driving $100,000.00 BMW to school I do have to wonder….

Old spice smells bad, but there are less expensive alternatives. I think guys need to learn that bathing consistently is a requirement and drinking water so that your body can flush out all the impurities is the problem. We had to be taught that personal hygiene is important including basic bathing. Deodorant can be overwhelming as well finding the right one that won't clash with your body chemistry is a real thing.

Kids wanting high price, brand name/label materials is not new. Every kid wanted the good stuff to look cool at school well before social media. At least that’s how it was for me going through school (late 90s/early 00s). However as a student studying beauty therapy, I do get concerned about young people spending a lot of money and being influenced by gimmick and/or overpriced skincare because while it’s important to take care of your skin, there is a lot of misleading information/products out there and I worry about what they’ll do to their skin, hair, nails etc because of it.

Yes True but getting a 13 year old 300 dollar perfume really was never common or really on the radar of a teen. This imo is an affluent issue and also a materialistic issue due to social media being on every persons phones especially young people thinking that its normal to "need" the perfume.
