I don’t get it. Millennials were wearing baggy jeans since the mid 90s. Skinny jeans are only the last ten years. It’s not a Gen Z thing. Millennial gangsters with their pants around their knees. It’s one thing for a generation to wear clothes of several generations prior and call it their own. But to wear the same clothes the generation above you wore at the same age, and chastise them for no longer wearing such? Sad. Very unoriginal. Millennials will just go back to wearing what they did in high school. Which is sad too. Everyone lame.

Most of us wore non-skinny jeans as little kids, but in our preteens/adolescence/young adulthood (over the last 15 years), we chose skinny jeans. I'm not opposed to either style. Personally, I find baggy jeans unflattering, but no one should be shamed for what they like to wear.

yeah i totally vibe with dressing for your essence, but idk how i feel about the whole “dress for your body type” thing still bc it can definitely fall into that trap of dictating what certain people are allowed to wear. like as a curvy afab person i’ve been terrified of horizontal stripes my entire life bc every single “dress for your body type” feature in a fashion magazine is always telling curvy girls & femmes what they can & can’t wear. idk it just feels like these things are always more about limiting what people with larger bodies are allowed to do. & i’ve literally never seen or heard anyone tell a man to dress for his body type. maybe my own body issues make me more sensitive towards this kind of thing, but those body issues are a direct result of the messaging from the fashion industry so.... @@rayne333 Yes absolutely! But I think trying to look thinner/taller is still not "dressing for your body" and is the same bullshit as trends coming in and out of style super fast. Like I think it's generally important to know what your body geometry is so you can be intentional about complimenting your lines/shapes or contrasting them. Kibbe is super flawed but that system was my first introduction into the idea that the shape of clothes could make me look more like me instead of trying to find clothes that made me look thinner. Like on someone with short arms/legs proportional to their frame, short sleeves and cropped pants blend in with the body/look more natural, while long and dramatic shapes will draw focus. Either one can be what you want to wear but it can be super useful to know what will make your face the focus vs. what makes the clothes the focus. And that has much more to do with your proportions than your size

But also my strategy to avoid trends is to wear vintage/historically inspired clothes so that I am *always* out of style

I like the approach of knowing what clothing does what on people's own body types precisely so that we can have greater control over how we want to look vs how society says we should look.

this is a super good point! i would say it's been only in the last 10 years that "youth" fashion has blended so much with "adult" fashion... probably bc brands develop a lot of their marketing strategies to target younger audiences on social media and so they end up abandoning the older demographic... and also bc i think celebrities and influencers just get younger and younger (vs. back in the day, when stars in their 30s were still very relevant). just my hypothesis though!

You need to look at the history of what was acceptable before coming to conclusions.. things like bright coloured hair, tattoos etc are now acceptable in the work place. When i first started doing hair ten years ago, all of my ‘professional’ clients had to get streaks underneath, to hide the ‘fun’ part under their natural colour to hide it at work. Had a young girl from a private school who couldnt alter her colour mor ethan 1-2 shades different from her natural... now most clients can have visible tattoos or pink hair and its much more acceptable. Society changes. Its not just fashion but in all of life. Jeans used to be not allowed in formal work places, dinners, or some nightclubs. And the advertising/media has ALWAYS used youth trends to drive market tastes. Its been said since the 90’s (and prob even before, w/80,s mall culture) that ‘14-17’ have most influence and spend the most shopping at stores(on clothes, novelty items,etc) out of any generations. This is much before the millennial generation that this has been a known thing. So its definitely not that ‘fashion today is so youth focused’ and its not a ‘millennial’ anything lol its society for a long ass time has been youth focused. Nothing new under the sun!

I'm a GenX in my 50s and I feel that my generation was probably the first to blur the line between what would be considered "age appropriate" clothing. I wear whatever I like as long as I feel good in it and it suits me. I have jeans in all styles. My favourite at the moment is a pair of loose fitting straight leg that I think are pretty ageless but can look super trendy depending on what I wear with them. I've seen trends come and go and come back again. Fashion belongs to everyone and shouldn't be used to attack or belittle people.

I grew up in the 70s like your mom, and even when I was a kid I hated bell bottom pants, and I’ve hated every time they have come back into fashion because I think they are ugly AF. Just like leggings, high waisted “skinny jeans” had their first round of widespread popularity in the early 80s, and it’s all I’ve worn ever since. When they aren’t in fashion, I scour thrift stores for them and will even alter wider legged pants to make them fitted.

Yeah I just deal with my feelings of trauma around ageing by talking to my therapist instead of being mean to kids. It's extremely embarrassing how obviously people are hurt by teens being like "adults aren't cool" - that's what kids are supposed to do! I feel real cringe about that millennial with the weird comedy song insisting how much she doesn't care. You wrote a song about it, that's almost the epitome of showing you care just after poetry. I do feel like this partly stems from millennials not feeling able to grow up because of the societal conditions we grew up in, many of us having no access to work so staying in education for years or piecing together part time jobs meant for "kids", no way to get on the property ladder, many still living with parents, the ideals of the generation before that signified adulthood just basically being impossible for us. So we still feel like we're the kids. Then actual kids are popping up reminding us we aren't and many are just feeling kind of spun off course by the reminder. I think also we were the first generation to really grow up with the internet and we feel like we own it in a way, so with an app like tiktok being very gen z heavy many millennials maybe feel a bit kicked off their turf, and the jeans thing is just insult to injury or whatever.

So being treated like a kid, but losing one of the only good things about being “the youth”, that is- dictating fashion, well that sucks. It’s like we’ve got nothing. I know some zoomers make fun of millennials using the word “adulting”, but we use it to show that we don’t really feel like adults, because most of us can’t afford to meet the “proper adult rites of passage”- like getting married and buying a house. So we feel like we aren’t proper adults, and that phrase is a way to point that out. I will say though that I think this little faux generational war needs to stop. Because Gens Y & Z need to work together to try to make the earth even slightly liveable for ourselves and future generations. I'm 32. That feeling never goes away. I still don't feel like an adult, I feel like I did at 16. I can obviously look back and see I've changed (thank god), but I'll always feel like I haven't. Ikr during quarantine I would gladly wear my skinny jeans to go out grocery shopping and run errands with my mom now that I went back to school I haven’t dared to even touch my skinny jeans because I feel awkward and so out of place from my friends that have all mom and baggy jeans, in which I only have about 3 pairs and that’s it so I end up wearing the same 3 jeans I have, to school just so that I don’t feel awkward 😭.

Agreed. Bootcut Jean's worked back when I was in high school and wore a size 8. Now at a size 18 skinny Jean's are SO flattering on me and larger baggier jeans look frumpy and unfinished.

One might think because my top part is bigger that baggy jeans or bootcut would flatter me and balance out my lower half but because I have no waist if I wear something like that I just look like a huge rectangle and skinny jeans at least give me the illusion of a waist so I've just been wearing them for years and years now. People can wear what they want honestly but just because something is "trendy" does not mean it would flatter every body type.

Thank you for putting words to something I’ve been feeling. In an effort to try some of the new trendy pants….I’ve had a revisit to my teenage years… crying in the dressing room because everything I try on either doesn’t fit or makes me look like a whale. I’m so confident in my skinny jeans, but I’d love to be on top of the new trends as well. Sigh 😒

It's so ironic to me to see all these comments of "non-skinny" people loving their skinny jeans because they made them feel better about their body and etc, because I'm not super fat but all my bodyfat is in my hips and legs and I've never owned any because I have never found a pair of skinny jeans that would fit me. Maybe it's a cultural thing from where I live (not US), but no matter which size of pants I get to try, their ankle and calf region size are always super tiny, the only thing that they enlarge is the waist part (and I actually have quite a small waist, comparing to everything else below it, so it made even less sense in my particular case). I couldn't even try them on properly, they never got past half my thighs. I'm glad to hear it worked out great for you all, though. Also, my pants don't last enough to save them for the next time they'll be on trend... Should I be getting higher quality clothes? 🤔

True that, I didn't give a shit about what other people thought about my clothes either, I wore what I had and what I liked and didn't care at all what my classmates thought about it (I actually wore a pair of my dads old shorts an entire summer cause I absolutely loved the color of blue they were). I guess us poor kids learned early on what others don't realize until much later in life, it's my life and other peoples opinions really don't matter.

And same, skinny jeans didn't fit my body, and in my country I couldn't get plus size skinny jeans so I continued wearing mum jeans/cargo pants lmao and I was happy but it still kinda sucked. I think having a personal style you're happy and comfortable with is healthier than trying to force yourself to follow the trends of the time

here in Poland also skinny jeans are super popular. The baggy one are usually wore by streetwear kids or lgbtq kids

I'm 34 and I love how the older I've gotten I care less and less about what other people think about me, not only regarding fashion. It's liberating and I wish I felt like this all my life.

Most people don't have personal taste or preferences, this is why they follow trends and need external sources telling them what fits together. Doesn't matter if they are teenagers or adults. Coming up with a personal style and fitting different items and colors is a skill like photography or painting. Some people see it innately and don't have to learn, but most do.

I'd be worried if they would think I'm cool because I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to be cool to them. But I do have some students who told me they thought I was cool for things I thought would make me weird in their eyes. So that's nice.

I agree. 😂 I think most Gen Zers are pretty stylish, especially compared to teenagers and people in their 20s of my generation, but I’m still going to wear what I want.

The other thing to consider is that when you're not using stretchy fabric, your patterns need to be that much more accurate to the form they'll be worn on. And mass-market fashion doesn't exactly have a great track record on sizing up cutting patterns well beyond a size 10. Not to mention anyone beyond an American size 4 can have their fat and muscle in a lot of different places and volumes.

How about that weird whiskering they used to do around the crotch/front thigh area of jeans. Like, I'm already battling the camel toe. I don't need my jeans to accentuate it with faded denim lines.

Also, not daring to wear skinny jeans when they first came into style, because the name brought us way to many fatphobic sayings like "skinny jeans don't make skinny legs" and 'fashion tips' stating that skinny jeans just aren't made for fat people. I only wore tights and dresses for years because skinny jeans were the only style of jeans available and I was too insecure to wear them in fear of being made fun of (was a older teenager/young adult then). And now it's the opposite way, that we are told to keep wearing skinny jeans, because we would look bigger in wide leg jeans and that's somehow bad? Fuck that noise!

Sooo true, when skinny jeans first started becoming popular but plus sized jeans didn't cater to it, I used to pin my boot cut pants to look like they were skinny jeans LOL

Right there with you. I'm a guy and my go to snow day outfit consists of thermal running tights and a wool pullover. Easiest way to put on boots, layer up more with snow pants, jackets, etc.

Yes! Retailers started marketing towards teens back in the 1960s (the teens in question would have been boomers, and the Silent Gen were in charge at the time). "Trendy" has been equated with "adolescent" since then, and different age groups have not really dressed the same since then. It's always been up to the individual whether or not to follow certain trends. I personally like some of the Gen Z trends so I'll be trying them out, others are not for me so I'll skip them, just like I skipped the "pregnant look" shirts in 2007.

Lee Mulkins, I'm a Millennial and I'm with you on this. I'm married to a Gen X man and he has three adult Millennial children and one adult Gen Z child. We have all faced Generational warfare in different ways. One of his children and I were born in 95 and have been told we're not real Millennials, because we only remember the tail end of the 90s and that we're 2000s kids. His Gen Z child and I have dealt with being told that we're babies having babies, even though neither of us had children until we were past 18. Then my husband has been called a Boomer within the last couple of years. Then he and I deal with people being shocked over our marriage because of our age gap, with him being an older member of Gen X and I being a younger Millennial. They can't wrap their heads around it and even say "You mean she's not your daughter?" and "Y'all must have nothing in common".

i'm a 1997 kid too and the same thing happens to me which made me realize that everyone wants to be a zillenial like us 💅

I get that. But for me they make me SO incredibly claustrophobic. I get like sensory overload with the tight fabric clinging to my skin. I LIVE for the recent supper baggy jeans trend because I can finally wear jeans without feeling like I want to claw them off haha. They’re also much more practical for skateboarding and days spent doing long walks. But to be honest I don’t know why people are getting so deep about jeans, just wear what works for you :)
